Northeast Nodaway's boys beat Worth County 61-35 to pick up their second win of the year as Garet Jackson had 21 points to lead the Bluejays. That was a career high for him. Joel Scroggie followed with 20, also a career high; Steve Schulte had 15. For Worth County, Brevyn Ross did all he could to keep the Tigers in the game, even leaping over a trash barrel and the bleacher stairs on the south end of the gym in a futile effort to save a ball from going out of bounds. But he did not get enough scoring help as once again, a promising start by Worth County fizzled. Chris Alarcon, playing his best game of the season, followed with seven.
Northeast was playing with some newfound depth as they got Andrew Faustlin back for the Worth County game and got Max Giesken back for the previous game. That allowed Coach Chaim Jenkins to go seven deep, filtering Andrew Freemeyer and Dalton Auffert off the bench to give his starters some badly needed rest. Worth County scored the first five points of the game, but Northeast's newfound depth allowed them to finish the game strongly instead of fizzling out in the second half. Chris Alarcon scored five of his seven points in the first quarter to put Worth County up 8-4, but then Northeast took the lead for good as Joel Scroggie was a force around the paint, blocking six shots for the night and altering many more. Garet Jackson and Steve Schulte were on fire in the second frame as Northeast took a 23-15 lead into the break. Brevyn Ross had 8 to lead Worth County at the half, but didn't get enough help.
Northeast played their best quarter of the year in the third frame. The backbreaker came late in the third when Steve Schulte threw a long outlet to Joel Scroggie for a layup after Brevyn Ross had converted a Nate Pointer steal to cut it to 28-21. Garet Jackson followed with a jumper with a defender in his face and then followed it up with a 3-pointer as Steve Schulte threw another long strike. Joel Scroggie blocked four shots in the third frame and Brevyn Ross' futile leap over the trash can and stairs did not save a ball from going out of bounds as Garet Jackson's free throws at the end of the third put Northeast up 39-22.
Northeast, who had trouble all year closing teams out, started the fourth quarter off strongly, scoring the first six points of the period and Brevyn Ross' 9 points in the period were a futile effort to get something going as Northeast pulled away for the 26 point win. The win was convincing enough that the Nodaway News-Leader sports writer put Northeast's boys in the middle tier despite the fact they have only won two games so far.
