(MODOT) -- This weekend's winter storm brought more snow across most of the
Northwest region, and crews with the Missouri Department of
Transportation have been out since the beginning plowing and treating
state highways. However, due to extremely low temperatures, blowing snow
and possible refreezing, MoDOT urges all motorists to drive with
caution if they have to drive Monday morning.
"We have our crews
out, but conditions in our area vary widely from clear and partly
covered roads to some still covered," said MoDOT NW District Maintenance
Engineer Marty Liles. "Conditions also can vary quickly, especially on
our less-traveled numbered and lettered routes, ramps, bridges and
auxiliary lanes so we really need motorists to stay home if possible or drive very cautiously."
While
crews have been working around the clock, the bitterly cold
temperatures make it difficult to plow snow or treat roadways with salt
and other snow-melting materials. Even in areas where crews have made
progress, it's possible motorists may encounter slick spots where
refreeze has occurred or blowing snow has covered an already-plowed
roadway.
"We will stay with it until we can restore state routes
to near-normal conditions," Liles said. "I would encourage everyone to
be very careful, give our snow plows plenty of room, don't try to pass
the plows and check on road conditions before you leave if you do have
to travel."
One of the best ways to prepare for winter travel is to check MoDOT's Traveler Information Map, located at http://www.modot.org/.
The map offers real-time views of road conditions for Missouri's
interstates and major highways. For smartphone and tablet users, MoDOT's
Traveler Information App brings the same information to your mobile
devices. Travelers can also pick up the phone and call MoDOT's toll-free
customer service center at 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636). Customer
service representatives are available to give road conditions updates 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
