Andy & Kim Welch purchase Jim's Friendly Tavern

Andy and Kim Welch of Sheridan have purchased Jim's Friendly Tavern from Jim Harrell, the Sheridan Express has learned. Jim's Friendly has been an institution in Sheridan for the last 20 years, being the place to be for many people in the community of all ages. Under Jim Harrell's ownership, the tavern has always featured live music, beer and drinks, dinner specials, home cooking, snacks, video games, pool, a jukebox and TV. The tavern has employed many people over the years and has had a lot of volunteer help as well in keeping everything done. The tavern has been a major economic pull for the area, bringing in people from all over the area including Bedford and Maryville. It has been one of the main places people congregate during Old Defiance Days and their Super Bowl parties with free food have drawn many people as well.

The Welches will take possession in 4-6 weeks when they get their liquor licenses. They will change the name of the business, but have not decided on the name. The tavern remained open for business Monday.

I was sorry to hear that Margaret Findley was in the hospital last weekend. She is home and doing a little better. Her daughters took turns helping her out while she wasn't feeling well.
Beth West and Kathleen Carroll were visitors of the John Stephenson family. They are from Kansas City and sisters to John. They took J.C. out school clothes shopping for his birthday.

Sheridan News for July 23rd, 2008

The Worth County Relay For Life was held at Grant City on Friday night from 7:00 p.m. till 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The Sheridan CBC team participated.
Sunday Oakley Risser of Vacaville, California, his sister Sally Beasley of Washington, Iowa, her daughter Kim Biasella of Overland Park KS, and Doris Risser visited with Myrtle Risser.
Faye Dowis Reynolds received 105 birthday cards in all. She thanks everyone for remembering her.
Wilma Dowis Brown and Jean Dowis O’Brien are in bad health. They are the sisters of Larry Dowis. Wilma is able to stay in her home with help from the hospice, while Jean is in a nursing home.
Estelle Bond, formerly a Sheridan resident now living in Portland, Oregon, has moved to a new apartment while hers is being cleaned up. Her husband Ernie is working 2 days a week for a hospice.
Joyce Dowis and another lady and a man will be driving a follow up car in the bicycle tour through Iowa Franklin Dowis had a birthday on the 19th of July. Happy Birthday Franklin. Robbie Dowis had a birthday party for his father Larry at Conception.
I'd like to thank Fran Dowis for keeping us up on the news of people who have been a part of this community in the past. It is always good to hear from old friends.

I would like to wish everyone who had anniversaries and birthdays this past week a very happy day.
Paul and Garland George visited with Ed and Margaret Findley on Saturday. On Sunday Rosalie visited from Savannah, Mo.
Paul and Sally Beasley, Washington, IA visited with Icle Young on Saturday July 5. Icle Young, Retha Floyd, Maxine Roberts, Glenda Wyer from the Sheridan Housing Complex went on the Oats bus to Grant City for the pot lunch on Friday
Fred and Patty Ray had a nice 25th Anniversary party at the community center on Sunday July 13 The weather was nice. There were many friends and family in attendance.

Sheridan News for July 9th, 2008

July 4th was a very busy day in Sheridan. David Parman was at his fireworks stand as he is every year. Several residents came in with donations to have a display at the park. That was greatly appreciated be all who participated. Everyone that was there is of the consensus that we should start early next year to get donations and have a display for everyone. Dale and I went to Oregon, Mo. for dinner with our daughter Gladys and her family.
Sheridan is saddened by the news that Bill Lantz has passed away. My prayers go out to his family.
Fred and Patty Ray will be celebrating their 25th anniversary on Sunday July 13 at the Community Building. Congratulations to them.
I wasn't able to get any calling done to see if anybody had any news this week but I hope if there is any news that people will feel free to call me. Some of the people who have moved away from Sheridan look forward to hearing how everybody they left behind is doing.

Sheridan News for July 2nd, 2008

I hope everyone enjoyed Old Defiance Days. The weather turned out pretty nice except for the beginning of the poker run but it even worked out fine.
Evelyn and Larry Hansen would like to thank everyone that attended their 50th anniversary party. All of the wishes for them were greatly appreciated.
Etha Pearl Ray was able to come from the WCCC for the festivities Saturday. Her son Stephen and his son Everett Collier and his wife Patty came from Independence and spent the day with Etha Pearl. They had two kids in the baby show.
Wilbur and Patty Rowe visited with Dale and Barbara Rowe on Saturday and stayed to watch some of the exhibits at the celebration. They visited with Myrtle Risser who was there with her sister Etha Pearl.
Marion Rowe was admitted to St Francis Hospital on Tuesday with blood clots in her legs. She was able to come home on Saturday and attend the Hee Haw Show in the evening. She is doing as well as can be expected after her recovery from her hip surgery.

Sheridan News for June 25th, 2008

Well another week has gone by and not much is going on Sheridan due to all the rain but I hope everyone is enjoying the good days we have when we have them.
Faye {Dowis} Reynolds would like to thank everyone that helped celebrate her 90th birthday on June 13. She received 90 cards and more are still coming. All of them have made her birthday a very happy and blessed day.
Eldon and Loretta Hart took a drive to Wyoming last week.
Old Defiance Days are fast approaching. The members of the CBC have been working long hours to get everything ready. I hope everyone that can make it will attend and support the efforts of the CBC.

Sheridan News for June 11th, 2008

I would like to wish a happy birthday to Evelyn Hansen. Also a happy anniversary to Larry and Evelyn on their 50th year together. A party was held at the Sheridan Community Center on Saturday June 7 in their honor. There was a good turnout of friends and family to help them celebrate.
Ed and Margaret Findley were visited by their daughter Rosalee Lancy from Savannah. She was there to check on Ed who had gone to the emergency room on Thursday. He returned home the same day.
Marsha and Doug Lager were house guests of Fred and Pat Ray last week. They became displaced from their home in Conception after lightning struck and caused a fire destroying most of their belongings. They have found a house in Conception to live in while they do some repairs and replace some of their belongings. Marsha is Pat’s daughter.

Sheridan News for June 4th, 2008

The last two weeks have been busy in Sheridan starting with the citywide garage sales on May 24. Then, that evening, the Christian Church held a spaghetti supper and a talent show at the old schoolhouse. Sunday was the Alumni Banquet, which brought many people who graduated from Sheridan to fellowship together. Of course, we don't want to forget Memorial Day. Several of the men who fought in past wars gathered at the different cemeteries to honor their fallen comrades. A lunch was served for them at the legion hall after they returned.
John Earl Young visited with his mother Icle Young over the Memorial Day weekend. Leo and Joann Parman from St. Joseph visited with Icle on Sunday. Kathy Cottrell and John her son from Ft. Madison, IA visited on Memorial Day. Icle's Sister Helen Baker, St Joe, called and said she will be having eye surgery on Tuesday June 2. She was supposed to have it on the first but it was moved.
There will be a party to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Evelyn and Larry Hansen on Saturday June 7th at the Sheridan Community Center. Evelyn will also be celebrating her 70th birthday. Everyone is invited. No gifts, just cards.
Saturday May 31 was also busy in Sheridan. The CBC held a ranch rodeo and had a good turnout. Everyone had lots of fun. There was a Fireman's ball afterwards.

Sheridan News for May 21st, 2008

Sunday was graduation day for some of our Sheridan seniors. Congratulations to each and every one of the graduation class of 2008 from Worth County. A party was held for Hillary Steinman and Lee Roy Goolsby at the Community Center.
On June 13 Faye {Dowis} Reynolds will celebrate her 90th birthday in Yuma, AZ. I did not get the zip code in the last time I mentioned it so I am going to put the whole address in for those of you who wish to send her a card. It is 13228 43rd, Yuma Arizona 85367.
Paul and Sally Beasley, Washington, Iowa visited with her Aunt Icle Young on Sunday. They also visited with Myrtle Risser and Iva Lee Johnson. Also they visited with Diana and Albert Baker, St. Joe
Over the weekend Myrtle Risser had a family get together with sister Etha Pearl Ray from the Grant City WCCC. Myrtle picked Etha up on Saturday a.m. and she stayed until Sunday p.m. Sunday sister Margaret Monday, Grant City, Kathleen and husband Frank Fletchall, Savannah, MO, John Nelson, Maryville, and Elbert Risser, Sheridan visited. Myrtle had a wonderful time with them as they don't get together very often.
Roy and Dale Rowe went to Red Oak, Iowa to visit with their sister Wilma Auten on Saturday.

Sheridan News for May 14th, 2008

I hope everyone had a nice Mothers Day. The weather was nice except for being a little cold. Linda and Eugene Keats, Stewartsville, visited with Lois Constant on Sunday.
We are all happy to see that Icle Young is doing well and is home from the hospital. John Young visited with his mother all week while she was recuperating. Saturday visitors with Icle were Dorilla Hawk, Genevieve Walker, Glenda Wyer, and Maxine Roberts.
Bill Lantz is home from the hospital and doing ok. Donna Lantz came on Wednesday from Harlan to visit. Saturday visitors were Barry and Linda Jones, Bethany, Stephanie Jones and friend from St. Joseph, Rob and Karen Dowis and Ryan.
Ralph and Judy Findley, Unionville, Rosalee, Savannah, and Garland and Paul George and granddaughter Cathy George and friend Maryville helped Ed Findley celebrate his 83rd birthday last week. Paul and Garland visited again on Mothers Day.
We are happy to see Glenda Wyer back home.

Sheridan News for May 7th, 2008

Fern Parman is a new resident at Worth County Convalescent Center. We hate to see her leave Sheridan but hope she is happy with her new surroundings. She is on the north hall, room 17 for anyone who wants to visit with her. She is sharing the room with Etha Pearl Ray. Visiting with Fern last week was her brother J.B. Turner, niece Betty Hill and Gordon Green From Tarkio, Eldon and Loretta Hart, Evelyn Hanson, Lois Constant, Jeff, Paige, Molly and Jess Blaine, Wayne and Judy Branham from Sheridan. Cathy Cottrell and Son John from Fort Madison, Iowa visited Icle Young Wednesday April, 30. Albert and Dianna Bakers St. Joseph, called on their aunt Icle Young Saturday a.m. May 3. They were headed for Allendale to visit her sister Vicky and other relatives. Icle Young was taken to the hospital last week and is expected to be home soon. We're sorry to hear that she's sick.
Laverne and Linda Walker took Ramona Parman to Janice Walkers in Kansas City on April 27 to see Janice's brother who has Cancer.
Marian Rowe has returned to her home from the nursing home. She is doing better. Glad to see her home. Wilbur and Patty Rowe Bedford had an accident with a cow last week. They are a little sore but doing the best they can under the circumstances. Wilbur is Roy and Dale’s Brother.
Omar Randle was taken to the hospital on Saturday May 3. He had a heart attack. Haven't heard how he's doing but will let you know when I hear. Bill Lantz also is in the hospital. Well wishes go out to both of them.

Sheridan News for April 30th

Well, Mothers Day is almost upon us. The family and friends of Faye {Dowis} Reynolds will be celebrating her 90th birthday on June 13 and would like to have cards for either Mothers Day or her birthday sent to her. Her Address is 13228 43rd, Yuma Arizona. Hearing from old friends would be a pleasant surprise.
Marion Rowe is still at Parkdale Manor but hopes to get home soon. She is doing well. Dale and I drove to Oregon Mo. Saturday to help with a benefit auction for a friend of our Grandkids.
Everyone was happy to see Charlene Hinshaw out and about. She is doing better after her surgery.
The CBC had a good turnout for the Relay For Life Fund raiser on April 19. Everyone had lots of fun.

Sheridan News for April 16th

Rob Smyser and Amanda Fleetwood have reason to be happy. Reed Allen Smyser was born on April 2 at 6:32 p.m. He weighed 5 lbs 6 oz. and was 19 inches long. Reed is the grandson of Bob and Barbara Fleetwood and Raymond and the late Alberta Smyser. His maternal Great Grandparents are the late John McKay and Marilyn McKay of Sheridan and Bill Fleetwood and the late Colleen Fleetwood of Grant City. Paternal Great Grandparents are the late Claude and late Bonnie Smyser Sheridan and the late John and the late Beatrice Smith Bedford, Iowa. Welcome to the world Reed.
Mary Jo Hawk and son Tucker and Gary Hawk went to Washington to help Celebrate the 100th birthday of Gary's grandmother Bertha Hawbeck.
Dale and Barbara Rowe visited with Marian Rowe at Parkdale Nursing Home on Monday. Sherry and David Evans took Marian to the doctor that afternoon.
The Sheridan CBC held a beef and noodle at the Sheridan Community Center on Sunday. There was a good turnout and several area senior citizens received dinners. The proceeds of the dinner will be going to the Relay For Life.

Easter brought many visitors to Sheridan. Guests of Lynna Hoover on Saturday evening were; Dale and Teresa Winemiller, Rolla MO, Shawn and Lucretia Eaton, Mikayla and Allie of Rolla MO, Andrea Winemiller and Jason Ballew of Kansas City, MO Richard and Sandy Meredith, Kerri Meredith of Bedford, IA, Jason Meredith of Fairfield, OH, Bill, Frankie, and Jared Staton, Cody Staton and Arlene Carroll all of Sheridan, David, Cathy and John Cottrell of Ft. Madison, IA and Geneveive Walker of Sheridan.
John Young visited with his Mother Icle Young. also visiting with Icle over the Easter holiday were Cathy and John Cottrell from Fort Madison IA. Amber Hawk visited with Icle on Saturday March 29. Amber teaches at Maryville and had time off so Icle was glad she thought about her.
Evelyn and Larry Hansen had their Granddaughter Dawn Renee Hansen stay after Easter with her friend David McClement and children Dakota Michael McClement, Dymond Sierra McClement, and a friend of the children Travis Medina.

Sheridan News for March 26th

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. Several kids enjoyed the Easter Egg hunt at the park Saturday. The Alumni Basketball Tournament also brought in a good crowd Saturday.
Sunday Don and Peggy Jones from Harlan Iowa visited with Joanne and Bill Lantz. Also visiting were Barry and Linda Jones from Bethany. Saturday Stephanie Jones from St. Joe visited with Bill and Joanne.
Evelyn and Larry Hansen hosted a family Easter dinner at the Community Center on Sunday. There were approximately 24 in attendance. After dinner a meal was taken to Lois Constant, which she would like to thank the Hansen family for. There was also an Easter egg hunt for the kids of the Hansen family.
Marion Rowe will be entering the hospital at Maryville March 25 for hip surgery. Best wishes in her recovery. Charlene Hinshaw will also be entering St Joe hospital for open heart surgery. Glenda Wyer will be going to her mother’s as her mother will be having surgery Tuesday too. Well wishes go out to all of these women.
