Rose Theatre to Present “Trapped in a Villain’s Web”

The Rose Theatre announces its upcoming production of Tim Kelly’s Trapped in a Villain’s Web or Weave Me a Loan on December 11-13 at 120 West Third Street in Maryville. All three performances are scheduled for 7:00 P.M. and will feature dessert served during intermission (including sugar-free and gluten-free selections).

This play is set during the 1890's in Brooklyn, New York, and features 14 adult actors. And what would a true melodrama be without two (or maybe three) villains? The main characters in the story are Fifi Du Bayou and Beau Weavil, who run a fake “Made-in-Paris” hat shop. With the aid of Scar’s snarling nephew, they also run a sweatshop, employing local orphans. To complicate matters, Beau Weevil has lost all the hat shop’s profits at the racetrack!

Enter Cora Cornseed from Dead Man’s Bend, Arizona. Long ago, Beau saved an old desert prospector, Cora’s father, from dying of thirst by giving him mosquito larvae-infected water. Before the prospector died, he arranged to send his sweet daughter, Victoria, to be protected and educated by the villain whom he mistakenly believed to be a good man. Trailing Victoria to the big city is her true love, Johnny Sage, “The Arizona Kid.” He believes in three things–law and order are two–but he can’t remember the third!

Beau and Fifi discover Victoria is filthy rich and the villain is to manage her business affairs. But, when Beau runs into trouble with gambling debts, and Victoria (one of their employees) turns out to be an heiress–let the laughter begin! Seating is limited to 56 for each of the three performances. Reserved tickets are available after November 20 and may be purchased online for $12 each (plus a small service fee)

Each ticket includes the cost of the show and dessert. This melodrama is suitable for all ages. Enjoy a story where actors share terrible puns for the audience. Where good triumphs over evil. And where laughter is the only way to escape the villains’ web.

 

Maryville Chosen as Site for Smithsonian Exhibition

The Rose Theatre will host an exhibit entitled, “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” from April 23rd, 2025 to June 4th, 2025. Maryville is one of only xis Missouri locations chosen by the Missouri Arts Council for the Smithsonian’s “Voices and Votes” Museum on Main Street program. Designed for small-town museums, libraries, and cultural organizations, “Voices and Votes” will serve as a community meeting place for conversation about democracy. The traveling exhibit is based on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History’s exhibition called, “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith.” It is brought to Maryville through the courtesy of the Smithsonian Institute and the Missouri humanities Council.

“Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” examines the American experiment of government “of, by and for the people” in rural areas, and how each generation seeks to form a “more perfect union.” From the revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, every citizen in every community is part of this ever evolving story.

The exhibit explores the origins of American democracy, the struggles to obtain and keep the vote, how democracy works, the right to petition and protest, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. “Voices and Votes” features historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; multimedia interactive games; and campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.

Four Maryville organizations are partnering to bring this exhibit to Maryville: Nodaway Community Theater Company, Make It Maryville, Nodaway County Historical Society, and Maryville Public Library. Additional exhibits involving voting rights and responsibilities will be on display at the historical society’s museum and at the library while the Smithsonian exhibit is at The Rose

The Rose Theater is located at 120 West Third Street in Maryville. Hours for the exhibit are currently set for Fridays from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., on Saturdays from 9:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M., on Sundays from 10:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M., and by special arrangement for groups of ten or more. “Spaghetti Western” to Play at Rose Theatre

The Rose Theatre announces four performances of “Spaghetti Western,” a melodrama with 24 local actors from 4th through 8th grades. The play will be presented March 20th and 21st at 7 pm and March 22nd and 23rd at 2 pm. All performances will be at the Rose Theatre, 120 West Third, Maryville.

Tickets are $8 plus a small fee and are available at the Rose Theatre website.

The melodrama revolves around Granny Smith and her granddaughter, Petunia Pearl, who face foreclosure on their hotel, the Hoot ‘n Holler. Villain Duke Dreadful plans to take over the hotel and force Petunia to marry him. World traveler Bonnie Voyage offers a remedy for the situation; enter and win a spaghetti sauce contest and win the $25 prize money. But will Granny’s secret recipe be good enough to win? Will Duke Dreadful force Petunia to marry him? Or will Sheriff Ketchum save the day and the heroine?

Smithsonian Exhibit Coming to Rose Theatre

"Voices and Votes: Democracy in America," is a Smithsonian exhibit, sponsored by Missouri Humanities. The exhibit shares the history of voting in the United States and stresses responsibilities of citizens to make their voices heard through the voting process.

The exhibit will be in place for six weeks at The Rose Theatre in Maryville, Missouri, from April 23-June 4, 2025. The display shares a pictorial history of the struggles and triumphs as Americans forge "a more perfect union."

The exhibit is appropriate for ages kindergarten through adult, with special attractions for younger visitors (including coloring books featuring Nodaway County citizens and events, as well as a commemorative picture taken with cut-outs of famous abolitionists).

The Nodaway County Historical Society is a partner for "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America" and will present a separate program and exhibit about voting rights in Nodaway County in May. A new exhibit about women's suffrage and a display of Alma Nash artifacts will be featured. The program is slated for May 10 at 11:00 A.M. at the historical society's museum location (110 North Walnut Street in Maryville).

Hours of operation for "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America" are set for Friday, from 5:00-8:00 P.M., Saturdays from 9:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M., and on Sundays from 10:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M.
