Kelsey Sperry Goes Beast Mode, Boards 14, Named Homecoming Queen

Kelsey Sperry grabbed 14 boards against archrival Tri-County and was named Homecoming Queen to top off her night as Gilman City overcame early foul trouble and kept on rolling with a 45-34 Homecoming win. The Hawks are heating up, having won their fifth straight now. Earlier during their winning streak, it was Khloey who was getting 15 boards a game. But Kelsey has gotten 13 and now 14 in her last two games.

Tri-County had only managed 27 points against Pattonsburg earlier in the year; the Panthers still had Katelyn Jones. But the Mustangs showed a lot of improvement from that game; they were a lot more aggressive on defense and broke out some new defensive looks that they hadn't used against Pattonsburg. It looked like they would take Gilman City out of their game at first as Tori Dustman hit a 3-pointer and then Zoie Williams added a putback to make it 5-2 for the Mustangs.

Gilman City had used rebounding to their advantage during their previous four games, but it was Tri-County who was controlling the boards early on, and they forced three early turnovers while not turning it over at all. "I told them they were better than this," said coach Kaitlyn Eoff. At first, no speeches worked as Khloey Sperry picked up her second foul and Williams slashed to the rim to make it 7-3. The Hawks were being killed on the boards, and they were missing free throws right and left.

But when Khloey Sperry went to the bench for most of the remainder of the half with two fouls, the team suddenly woke up and started chipping away at the line. Colbi Webb came off the bench to score, then Alli Burke got a steal to tie it right back up at 7-7. Tri-County got in some foul trouble of their own as the officials were calling a tight game. A free throw from Burke and then three of four from the line for Kelsey Sperry put the Hawks in front 11-7 before Williams cut it to 11-9 after one.

The Hawks knotted it up at 11 to start the second only for Avery Gregg to hit a 3-pointer. Shelby Gibson knocked one down from the high post, and Gregg slashed down the right side to make it 18-11. But Allee Prescott hit a shot from the left wing to make it 18-13 and then the Mustangs rushed their starters back in and they rallied to tie it at 18 at the half.

Tri-County threatened to take over in the second half when Williams drove with her right, spun away from the help, and exploded to the rim with her left hand and Alexis Neeley added a putback to put them up 22-20, but Khloey Sperry was back and she adjusted to the officiating and carried the Hawks on her shoulders the rest of the way. Khloey posted up and finished off a pass from Shelby Gibson and then Avery Gregg drove and scored off another pass from Shelby as Tri-County started burning their timeouts. But out of their timeout, Gilman City got a stop and Khloey grabbed a defensive board and went coast to coast, taking on multiple Tri-County defenders, and scoring. Alli Burke scored off a drive, then Shelby Gibson got her third assist of the quarter, finding Kelsey Sperry inside for two free throws after drawing a foul to make it 30-22. Lily Turner cut it to 30-23, but Avery Gregg went coast to coast to make it 32-23 after three quarters.

Alexis Neeley drove with her left hand and scored to cut it to seven, but Avery Gregg got a double screen and drove around it and finished. From there, Khloey Sperry started taking over, hitting two free throws and then Avery Gregg hit Sperry inside and she did a 180 before finishing to make it 38-25 with 5:57 left.

Tri-County used up their next to last timeout, but they had one shot left in their locker. They got a drive from Dani Critten and scored, and then they put on a full court man to man press and got a steal, leading to a finish by Turner to cut it to 38-29. But Gilman City called a timeout and stopped the bleeding and Shelby Gibson got the ball into Khloey Sperry to make it 40-29. After a stop, Shelby Gibson grabbed an offensive board, took it to the top, and found Khloey Sperry inside again and she drew Turner's fifth foul, hitting one of two to make it 41-29.

The lead grew to 13 again at 44-31 before Critten hit a guarded three to make it 44-34 with 28 seconds left. But Gilman City was able to dribble out the clock and Gregg hit a free throw at the end.

Khloey Sperry had a huge second half outburst, getting 16 points in the frame to finish with 19. Avery Gregg had 13, Alli Burke and Kelsey Sperry had 5, and Colbi Webb and Shelby Gibson had 2.

After being killed on the boards early in the game, Gilman City reasserted itself on the boards and outrebounded Tri-County 43-30 for the game. Kelsey Sperry had 14 boards, Shelby Gibson 9, Khloey Sperry 8, Alli Burke 6, Avery Gregg 3, and Colbi Webb 3.

Shelby Gibson nearly had an unconventional double-double as she had 7 assists to go with her 9 boards. Avery Gregg had 4, Kelsey Sperry 3, and Alli Burke and Colbi Webb 1 each.

Khloey Sperry had 5 tips. Kelsey Sperry had 2, and Alli Burke, Shelby Gibson, and Avery Gregg had 1.

Avery Gregg had 7 steals. Shelby Gibson had 3, Kelsey Sperry 2, and Khloey Sperry, Alli Burke, and Colbi Webb 1 each.
