Jackie Wray did all she could defensively for North Nodaway, grabbing 11 boards, blocking 4 shots, and altering a lot more against OSHS Friday, but ice cold shooting kept North Nodaway into a tailspin as they fell 38-22.
The Mustangs had every right to expect a 50/50 game, as since beating the Mustangs in the PVI to go to 2-0, the Wildcards had dropped their next four games, none of which was closer than 16 points.
The game started out that way for much of the first quarter and part of the second. After Addy Ramos hit a 3-pointer to set the Wildcard crowd into a frenzy, the teams traded buckets for a long time. The Mustangs got balanced scoring as Lily Blane, Jackie Wray, Addalea Barcus, Lacy Riley, and Mya Hansen all chipped in with points and the Mustangs were trailing 11-9 early in the second.
But then Jackie Wray rolled her ankle at some point during the next stretch and the orange shirts took advantage, with Addie Jackson getting consecutive traditional three point plays to put her team up 19-9. After Wray came out, OSHS continued to pull away, getting a drive from Ramos, an inside shot from Jackson at the first half buzzer, and then a baseline shot from Jaelin Haun to start the second to make it 25-9.
Meanwhile, North Nodaway was getting a lot of good looks offensively, but was missing shots right and left. Wray finally came back in at the 4:42 mark of the third and North Nodaway started going to the rim, which stopped the bleeding and they were able to play evenly the rest of the way. But North Nodaway could never get closer than 14.
Addalea Barcus had 5 points going to the rim and getting on the line in the third; she was three for four from the line. In the fourth, Lacy Riley scored off two drives and Mya Hansen one, while Barcus finally got an outside shot to go down after a kickout from Wray.
