Gilman City came into Thursday night's game on a three game winning streak, winning each game by 20 or more. They had done so fueled by their rebounding, getting around 45 a game and getting 60 one game. The question was whether they could keep that up against tougher opposition. They passed that test with flying colors, grabbing 48 boards and getting a 53-31 win over North Harrison. While Khloey Sperry has been fueling the Hawks' resurgence, getting around 15 a night, it was Kelsey this time who led the Hawks on the boards, getting 13 for the night. Khloey was right behind her with 12.
For North Harrison, they got off to a good start with six wins in the December portion of the season. But they were unfortunate enough to run into a resurgent Stanberry squad led by Lindsey Hailey, who went off in Stanberry's 59-25 win against Hale in Trenton. North Harrison and Stanberry went toe to toe and it was tied in the last few minutes of the game in Stanberry. But a frantic rebounding scramble resulted in the ball rolling right to Hailey, who had nobody within 10 feet of her. She knocked down a critical tiebreaking triple, and Stanberry held on for a 33-27 win. North Harrison shot 1 for 14 from the line in the loss.
Gilman City started off by driving to the rim against the Shamrocks, with only six players on the roster. The goal was to get them into early foul trouble, and it worked as they started pulling away at the line. Alli Burke finished a drive for a layup, and then Shelby Gibson, Alli Burke, and Avery Gregg all hit free throws to get it to 6-0. Khloey Sperry then got untracked and got loose in transition for two, then converted a three point play as the foul trouble was mounting for the Shamrocks. That made it 11-0.
Jaxcynn Hansel finally got North Harrison on the board with a putback and Ava Rinehart scored from inside to cut it to 13-4 after one quarter. But the Hawks enjoyed a 17-11 rebounding advantage after one. Khloey Sperry picked up her second foul and Hansel cut the Shamrock deficit to 15-6, but then Shelby Gibson aired one out to Avery Gregg and Kelsey Sperry converted a miss in transition to make it 19-6. At that point, the rebounding margin was 23-14 in Gilman City's favor.
North Harrison burned another timeout, but Avery Gregg scored off a teal, Khloey Sperry got a putback, Alli Burke knocked one down from the right wing, Sperry hit a free throw, and Alli Burke went coast to coast to make it 28-8 before Gracie Young knocked down a tough shot from the high post to cut the Shamrock deficit to 28-10 at the half.
The rebounding margin was 32-18 in Gilman City's favor at that point, but North Harrison rebounded much better in the second half, allowing them to hang with the Hawks for much of the frame. Hali Smith got on the board with four points in the third period and Addison Milligan added a putback. Jaxcynn Hansel added another putback and Khloey Sperry got her third and fourth fouls, sending her to the bench. But Avery Gregg hit a 3-pointer towards the end of the third quarter to make it 39-18 to quash any hopes of a Shamrock comeback.
Lani Briggs' free throw made it 39-19, but then Khloey Sperry came back in and the Hawks heated up from the floor in the final period. Shelby Gibson hit a free throw, Gibson hit Avery Gregg on the baseline for three, Kelsey Sperry hit from the wing, Khloey Sperry hit a free throw, Shelby Gibson got a steal and finished over Hali Smith, Gregg got her third 3-pointer of the night, and Khloey Sperry drove and scored to make it 53-25 at the 1:51 mark before the Hawks subbed freely at the end.
