Tigers Down Longhorns, Advance in NW Missouri Tournament

Worth County downed South Nodaway48-27 in opening round action of the Northwest Missouri Tournament to advance to the second round Monday night. The Tigers bounced back from a 58-50 loss to West Nodaway in which the Tigers could not overcome foul woes in that game. Against Zach Hilsabeck and the Longhorns, Worth County was able to use their speed once again to beat the height of South Nodaway as they jumped out to an early lead, held off a South Nodaway rally in the third quarter, and pulled away in the 4th for the win.

The Tigers have been struggling a lot from the field, but everything they threw up went in during the first five minutes of the game. Alex Harmening hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to open the scoring, followed by a drive down the right side by Eli Mullock following an offensive board. Worth County outworked and beat the Longhorns to a ton of boards on both ends despite their smaller size Monday. Wyatt McClain added a 3-pointer from the right wing, followed by another one from Todd Harding. Harding would go on to have 22 points after being one of the few offensive bright spots against West Nodaway with 24 points. Eli Mullock got behind the South Nodaway defense after a long outlet to complete the run and give Worth County a 13-0 lead.

South Nodaway burned three timeouts in the period in an effort to stop the run and they cut it to 13-5, but then Todd Harding drove down the right side and then followed up with a steal with 1:14 left that he turned into a 3-point play to make it 18-5 after one quarter of play. Despite cooling off in the second quarter, Worth County continued to pull away as Brian Hall scored off a fast break as South Nodaway tried to put on a press, but nobody was back guarding the basket. This was one of several defensive breakdowns for South Nodaway that night. Todd Harding scored off an Alex Harmening steal, Andrew Mullock came off the bench to score off a fast break as he played some of his best basketball of his young career, and Todd Harding hit a floater at the buzzer to make it 26-8.

South Nodaway came out attacking the Tiger press in the third quarter and were seemingly going to make a game of it as they were able to get some layups against it and work the ball into their big men and make use of their height. Harding continued to hit for the Tigers, getting a 3-pointer from the left wing and stepped through two defenders and hit one over Hilsabeck to make it 31-13. South Nodaway scored the next eight points, all in a 1:43 span, to cut the lead to 31-21. But then Jordan Harding grabbed an offensive board and hit a free throw and then nobody matched up on Andrew Mullock, whose layup attempt missed, but Brian Hall was there for the putback to make it 34-21.

The Longhorns cut it to 34-23 to end the third quarter, but then Todd Harding scored off a drive and then got another layup after Alex Harmening got a defensive board and pushed it up the floor. On the next play, nobody guarded Alex Harmening on an inbounds situation as someone forgot their assignment and he connected from downtown to make it 41-23. During that stretch, the South Nodaway coach threw in the towel even though it was still early in the fourth quarter and took both his big men out. Eli Mullock got a drive down the right side and hit a floater after missing a ton of shots after the first quarter. Brian Hall scored from inside off an inbounds play, Todd Harding hit a free throw, and Hall scored from inside to round out the scoring for Worth County.
