Free Fishing Days June 7th and 8th

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to get hooked on fishing through its Free Fishing Days June 7 and 8, 2025. Each year MDC designates the weekend after the first Monday in June for permit-optional fishing. The goal of Free Fishing Days is to encourage people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. During Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in the Show-me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp or trout park daily tag.

Other regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Regulations are outlined in the 2025 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations Booklet and are available where fishing permits are sold, MDC offices, or online at www.mdc.mo.gov. Fishing permits are required for public water fishing (except on June 7 and 8, 2024), and can be purchased at vendors across Missouri, through the MDC MO Hunting permit app, or online.

MDC has many conservation areas with lakes and ponds to fish.  You can go to www.mdc.mo.gov to find information about fishing, conservation areas, maps, regulations, etc. Popular public waters in Northwest Missouri to fish are Mozingo Lake, Harrison County Lake, Pony Express Lake, Limpp Lake, Worth County Lake, Happy Holler Lake, Paho Lake, and Smithville Lake. Many state-owned fishing areas also have special facilities for anglers with disabilities.

 

Opinion -- Missouri Supreme Court Decision Victory for Life

The following statement is from Steve Rupp, President of Missouri Right to Life:

Missouri Right to Life welcomes the Missouri Supreme Court Decision on Tuesday, ordering a Jackson County judge to vacate the preliminary injunctions that she had entered earlier this year in which she declared the Missouri abortion ban and all of Missouri's health and safety regulations unconstitutional under Amendment 3.

This decision will save lives of preborn babies and the health and safety of Missouri Women.  

Among the regulations that the judge had declared unconstitutional included requirements that:

—Only doctors perform abortions. 

—Surgical instruments be sterilized before use.

—Doctors examine the mother to determine the gestational age of the unborn child and to identify any medical risk before performing an abortion.

—Ultrasounds only be performed by licensed medical professionals.

—Abortion clinics have emergency trays and emergency supplies.

Doctors obtain informed consent prior to performing an abortion.

The Missouri Supreme Court's ruling came as a result of an appeal filed by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, utilizing the authority granted by the Missouri Right to Life backed Senate Bill 22, in which the Attorney General challenged the Jackson County preliminary injunctions.

The Missouri Supreme Court sent the case back to the Jackson County court with instructions to reevaluate Planned Parenthood's request for preliminary injunction based on several criteria, including if Planned Parenthood would suffer irreparable harm without the injunction and also to balance that harm with any injury that an injunction would inflict on other interested parties.

Planned Parenthood had previously stated in court filings that they could not comply with the health and safety standards listed above and after the ruling stated they were cancelling abortion appointments and would cease abortions, the killing of innocent unborn children, until further order of the court.

This is a great victory for life!

 

Bill Would Allow Farmers to Shoot Black Vultures Attacking Livestock

Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) helped introduce The Black Vulture Relief Act, which would amend the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to allow Missourians to take action against a black vulture when the bird is causing death, injury or destruction to livestock.

“Black vultures are a deadly species that have caused hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to ranchers and producers across Missouri. These birds are native to Missouri and have seen their population grow by more than 450% since 1990. We must keep this dangerous bird population under control and allow ranchers and producers across the Show Me State the ability to do what they do best— feed our nation and the world,” said Senator Eric Schmitt.

“Predatory black vultures pose a serious threat to livestock in Missouri and across our nation. For too long, livestock producers have been burdened by red tape and bureaucracy when defending their farms. Missouri Farm Bureau is grateful to Senator Schmitt and his colleagues for leading the charge to give farmers the ability to protect their livestock when threatened. This is an important step in the right direction, and we look forward to working with our elected leaders to implement this commonsense reform to better serve farmers and ranchers,” said Garrett Hawkins, President of the Missouri Farm Bureau a farmer from St. Clair County.

“Missouri producers increasingly face the emotional and financial strain of cattle deaths due to the predatory black vultures. At a time when our state’s cattle numbers are at the lowest level since the 1950s, we cannot afford to have vultures killing newborn calves. Producers need to be able to protect their private property regardless of an international bird treaty signed 110 years ago. Thank God we have a U.S. Senator with commonsense who cares more about cattlemen than scavengers,” said Mike Deering, Missouri Cattlemen’s Association Executive Vice President.

The Black Vulture Relief Act will:

· Amend the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to allow a covered person (producer or employee of a producer) to take (capture, kill or disperse and transport carcass) a black vulture when…

· The vulture is causing, or that the covered person has a reasonable belief will cause, death, injury, or destruction to livestock.

· Cause injury to the bird in the course of taking or attempting to take a black vulture.

· Require producers file an annual report with their local FWS office on yearly takings, if the producer takes a vulture in the year.

I-35 Bridges Near Maysville, Eagleville to Close for Repair

The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted Capital Paving & Construction, LLC to complete a bridge deck replacement project on the Daviess County Missouri Route 6 bridge over Interstate 35 near Altamont and the Harrison County Route N bridge over I-35 near Eagleville. The Route 6 bridge in Daviess County is scheduled to close beginning Monday, June 9.

Traffic Impacts: Route 6 (Exit 64): The bridge over I-35 will be closed June 9 through late August 2025. Motorists will not be able to cross the bridge. A detour will be in place directing traffic to use U.S. Route 69 (Exit 69 to the north and Exit 61 to the south).

Interstate 35 under the bridge will be closed overnight in both directions during demolition and traffic will be directed up and over the ramps at Route 6 (Exit 64) around the closure. More information will be shared once a closure date has been determined. 

The bridge deck replacement on the Harrison County Route N bridge near Eagleville is scheduled to begin in early September.
