Hy-Vee Recalls Hamburger Skillet Meal

Hy-Vee, Inc., based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling one variety of its Hy-Vee Chili Macaroni Hamburger Skillet Meal due to the presence of an undeclared allergen (dairy) not listed in the product packaging.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product.

Hy-Vee was made aware of the undeclared allergen on Friday, March 24, 2023. The recall was initiated after reviewing the spice packet. Lot FEB0824 Y18 was only lot impacted by this packaging issue.

The affected products were distributed to Hy-Vee’s grocery stores and Dollar Fresh Market stores across its eight-state region of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The recalled product is labeled as Hy-Vee Chili Macaroni Hamburger Skillet Meal and is packaged in a 5.2 oz cardboard box. The only Best By date that is being recalled is “Best By FEB 08 24 Y18” and this code can be found on top of the box. The recalled product also has UPC 0075450085520.

Hy-Vee has voluntarily removed all affected Hy-Vee Chili Macaroni Hamburger Skillet Meal entrees from its shelves. Customers who purchased the product and have a dairy sensitivity should dispose of the product or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund. Hy-Vee Now Offering Flu Shots

Hy-Vee, Inc. announced Monday that the flu vaccine is now available inside its more than 270 Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations, with no appointment or prescription necessary. Drive-thru flu clinics will also be offered at Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations throughout the company’s eight-state region on select days. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends individuals 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine each year to prevent getting and spreading the flu virus.

Australia is nearing the end of its worst flu season in five years, according to a report from the country's Department of Health and Aged Care1, a sign that flu activity in the U.S. could reach pre-pandemic levels during the 2022-2023 season. 

Hy-Vee pharmacists conduct a screening process prior to vaccination to ensure each individual is receiving the most beneficial flu vaccine for their health. Both regular- and high-dose flu vaccines are available at Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations. Medicare and most insurance plans cover the flu vaccine and other immunizations at no charge. At this time, all vaccine patients must wear a mask during their vaccination, according to CDC guidelines.

Currently, flu vaccines are available without a prescription during regular pharmacy hours to patients 6 months and older at Hy-Vee’s Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota locations; or 3 years and older in Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin locations, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ PREP Act.

Patients 12 years and older may also receive their COVID-19 vaccine or booster at the time of their flu shot at their local Hy-Vee Pharmacy. Patients seeking both a flu and COVID-19 immunization should notify their Hy-Vee pharmacist upon arrival.

Hy-Vee will also be offering workplace vaccination clinics using its fleet of Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles and Hy-Vee Health mobile trailers. Hy-Vee Voluntarily Withdraws All Potato Salad Varieties

Out of an abundance of caution, Hy-Vee, Inc. is voluntarily withdrawing all varieties and all sizes of its Hy-Vee Potato Salad and Mealtime Potato Salad due to a presumptive positive microbial result on the line that the potatoes were processed on. While final test results are not expected for approximately 7-10 days, due to the holiday weekend Hy-Vee elected to withdraw all product today from its shelves and service cases pending final test results. 

The voluntary withdrawal includes all varieties and all sizes of Hy-Vee Potato Salad and Mealtime Potato Salad available from grab-and-go refrigerated cases and/or deli service cases in all Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore and Dollar Fresh Market locations – as we well as Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores – across the company’s eight-state region of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The expiration dates are between July 31, 2022, and Aug. 4, 2022. 

The list below outlines the products that have been withdrawn. No other Hy-Vee or Mealtime branded salads are impacted. To date, there have been no reports of illness or complaints involving the products addressed in this withdrawal.

Albany Hy-Vee to Offer Free Drive Thru Testing

On Wednesday, Hy-Vee announced an expansion of its Coronavirus testing for more than 150 Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations. Albany Hy-Vee is participating. The tests are free and administered via drive-thru. People do not have to have COVID-19 symptoms, but they must register online. Children ages three and up can get tested. 

Each location is offering testing on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The process takes about five minutes. Results will be returned within 3-5 business days.

Hy-Vee to Distribute 3 Million Free Masks to Customers

In an effort to protect its customers and employees from COVID-19, Hy-Vee in Grant City and other stores will distribute free masks to those entering its stores starting Monday, July 27. The company will hand out more than 3 million free masks in an effort to help support the CDC’s recommendation to wear masks in public by launching a new initiative called “Mask It Up To Shut COVID Down. It’s Your Choice.”

Starting July 27, employees will be stationed at the front doors of all stores to hand out masks to customers who are not wearing one prior to shopping. Customers will also see signage, employee attire, and other reminders around the store about the educational campaign.

Hy-Vee employees have been wearing masks since nearly the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Several Area Schools Affected by Beef Recall

The USDA has released all of the schools in the country that were affected by the Hallmark/Westland Beef Recall, which was the largest beef recall in US history. Several Northwest Missouri and Southwest Iowa schools were affected by the recall, including two neighboring schools. The schools in the area that were affected were, in Southwest Iowa, Bedford, Clarinda, Lamoni, New Market, and Mount Ayr. In Northwest Missouri, the schools affected were Mercer, Stanberry, Lawson, East Buchanan, and the St. Joseph Public School District.
The Worth County School District was not affected by the recall. The USDA has not released the stores that were affected by the recall; however, a spokesman for Hy-Vee’s corporate office told the Express that neither the local Grant City Hy-Vee nor the corporation was affected by the recall as they bought meat from an Iowa supplier. Hallmark/Westland was based in California.
