Lauren Herndon Carries Mustangs; Kynah Steele's Double Double Not Enough

Worth County had more rebounds than North Nodaway and fewer turnovers, but North Nodaway had the superior firepower as the Mustangs beat Worth County 38-28. Lauren Herndon carried the Mustangs on her shoulders, scoring 18 points and stuffing the stat line with 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 tips, and 6 steals while Saryn Brown softened up the Tiger defense with 14 points and four 3-pointers, three from NBA range. Kynah Steele did all she could for the Tigers with a double double with 14 points and 12 boards, but nobody else had more than 4 points as the Tigers are searching for their first win.

The Tigers had a brutal schedule to start off the season. They suffered running clock losses to perennial powerhouses Mercer and Platte Valley. They played better against a solid North Andrew team with a lot of size, but lost 31-26. There was no rest for the weary as the Tigers were faced with the unenviable task of stopping Herndon and Brown, easy for coaches to tell their players to do, but a lot harder to do in practice.

Saryn Brown struck early for North Nodaway, knocking down the first of her NBA triples, giving the Mustangs a 5-1 lead at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter. Worth County fought back following a timeout as Kynah Steele hit two free throws and then kicked one out to Keira Hardy to knot it up at 5-. But Lily Blaine hit a baseline shot, Saryn Brown hit the second of her triples, and Lauren Herndon hit another following a Lily Blaine steal to make it 13-5 before Steele’s free throws cut it to 13-7.

Autumn Cousatte hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 13-10, but the Tigers were scoreless the rest of the period as Lauren Herndon hit two free throws and then drew a foul on a 3-pointer and converted a four point play to put the Tigers in a 19-10 hole at the half. Both teams were ice cold from the field.

But Worth County heated up as Kambree Briner got on the board with an inside shot and then Kynah Steele took a charge on defense. That play sparked the Tigers, who got a free throw from Briner, a triple from Rylee Ruckman, a fast break from Kristen Tracy after Kynah Steele got a steal, and Kambree Briner hit Kynah Steele for a drive to put the Tigers in front 20-19.

But then Kristin Tracy picked up her third foul and came out, and all the momentum went back to the Mustangs. Without Worth County’s tallest player on the floor, North Nodaway found the driving lanes open again. Saryn Brown’s free throw tied it at 20, and then Lauren Herndon got a steal to put her team up 22-20. Saryn Brown hit the third of her NBA threes, and then Herndon hit a triple after Saryn Brown kept a possession alive with 15 seconds left to make it 28-20 before Kynah Steele answered with one of her own to cut it to 28-23.

Kynah Steele scored off a drive after Autumn Cousatte skipped her a pass to cut it to 28-25, but then Kristen Tracy picked up her fourth foul and then nobody matched up on Saryn Brown, who hit her fourth foul to make it 31-25 and swing the momentum back in North Nodaway’s favor. Lauren Herndon added a steal and Brown a free throw to make it 34-25.

Worth County tried to put on their press, but North Nodaway bled the clock down from four minutes to one before the Tigers finally got a stop and Rylee Ruckman hit a free throw to cut it to 34-26. Lauren Herndon hit a free throw, but Kynah Steele hit two free throws to cut it to 35-28 with 44 seconds left. But Worth County had to start fouling, and Lacy Riley and Lauren Herndon were 3 for 4 from the line down the stretch.
