Audrey Runde Scores 16 as Junior High Tigers End on Winning Note

Worth County’s junior high girls closed out their season with a winning note, getting a 36-23 win over North Harrison Wednesday at the North Harrison Junior High Tournament. After grabbing the Consolation Trophy at NEN, the Tigers raised their winning streak to four. First, they beat Albany by one point when Megan Tracy’s last second free throw went in. Then, they faced a much taller South Harrison squad, but managed to hit enough outside shots to get the win. They then dropped a rematch to Albany, in which everything that the Warriors threw up went in. They then lost by four to Princeton, who ran the floor well in the win. North Harrison dropped two close losses to Albany and Princeton, setting up a game in which both teams were hungry for a win to finish their season.

Kennedy Murphy hit a shot from the left wing to start the Tiger scoring, and then Megan Tracy added a free throw. Raegan Hogan’s putback was the only two points for North Harrison in the first period; Worth County countered with a 3-pointer from the wing from Audrey Runde, another from Megan Tracy, and a midrange shot from Runde to make it 11-2. Kennedy Murphy set up the last two scores by keeping possessions alive with offensive boards, continuing the beast mode play she had shown at the NEN Tournament.

North Harrison struggled defensively in the period, not getting a single tip on defense and only getting one steal. Megan Tracy went coast to coast to make it 13-2, but then North Harrison started fighting back, getting an inside shot from Hali Smith, a steal from Ava Rinehart, and then a pass from Addison Milligan to Rinehart to cut it to 13-8.

The rest of the half featured a scoring duel between Audrey Runde and Ava Rinehart, with both players hitting four points each as Rinehart carried the Shamrocks on her shoulders and kept them in the game in that quarter as they kept it at 17-12.

Brooklyn Smith, who was held scoreless in the first half after hanging 24 on North Harrison in the first half, nearly made a logo three, the same shot that Caitlin Clark makes all the time for Iowa. Although Smith missed the shot, it seemed to get her going as she would go on to score 10 in the second half. After Rinehart would get her team to within 20-16, Brooklyn Smith got on the board, hitting two free throws and adding a steal to break the Shamrock rally.

Smith kept going to start the fourth quarter, scoring off a Megan Tracy steal and getting a tip and steal. Audrey Runde added a drive to make it 30-16 with 3:36 left. But North Harrison switched from a zone to a man to man and started coming back, as Rinehart scored off a steal, Hali Smith hit a baseline shot, and Rinehart scored off another steal to make it 30-22.

But the momentum swung back in the Tigers’ favor after Rinehart picked up her fourth and fifth fouls. Audrey Runde and Megan Tracy hit two free throws each and Brooklyn Smith scored a layup after Laura Hansen saved a ball from going into the backcourt and fed her the ball.
