Just four days removed from playing in a State Championship football game, Worth County was able to knock off North Nodaway 61-47 Monday as they used a 27 point outburst in the third quarter, 22 points from Tyler New, and a double double from Bo Collins. Last year, for much of the season, it was Tyler New against the world, but this time, he had plenty of help as seven Tigers entered the scoring column.
Two years ago, the Tigers pulled off something similar at
Northeast Nodaway. They played in the State Championship game, then turned
around and beat NEN, who had won the Platte Valley Invitational and was off to
a 4-0 start. North Nodaway fell short in the championship game against
Christian, but had every reason to be pleased with how they started after a
quality win over DeKalb and a win over a bigger school in Nodaway Valley.
But it was Worth County who got off to a hot start when
Tyler New hit a baseline shoe off a pass from Bo Collins, and then Bo hit
Cannon Fletcher for three to make it 5-0. Aydan Blackford cut it to 5-3, but
then Caleb New hit a 3-pointer, Cannon Fletcher added a free throw, and Cole Ruby
hit another 3-pointer to make it 14-5.
But then Owen Martin sparked the Mustangs with his defensive
play as he got a steal to set up Mason Casner’s 3-pointer and then got loose at
the buzzer inside to cut it to 14-10. Tyler
New and Bo Collins built it back up to 18-10 for Worth County, only for Aydan
Blackford to carry the Mustangs on his shoulders, scoring the next six points
before Brice Trimble’s 3-pointer cut it to 20-19 at the half.
Worth County showed plenty of rust in the opening half, but
they came out on fire again to start the second half as Tyler New’s drive set
up Karson Briner and Bo Collins added a steal to make it 24-19. North Nodaway
hung with Worth County for a while, but Tyler New started carrying the Tigers,
going coast to coast for a three point play and then Bo Collins aired one out
to him to make it 31-22 at the 5:22 mark.
For the next stretch, North Nodaway matched Worth County
blow for blow, and Ethan Fry stripped Karson Briner after he got a rebound and
finished to cut it to 38-30, but after Blaine Clements picked up his fourth
foul, Worth County went on another run from the line. Bo Collins went 4 for 4
from the line, Hayden Sanders added two more, and Tyler New added a drive
against two blue shirts to make it 47-30 before Aydan Blackford’s free throws
cut it to 47-32 after three.
Hayden Sanders hit a 3-pointer and then took a charge on
Owen Martin, drawing his fifth foul, but then Worth County’s players’ legs got
tired and the rust began to show as North Nodaway started to come back again.
Aydan Blackford pulled up and hit a 3-pointer, then Mason Casner got behind the
defense to cut it to 50-37. Aydan Blackford then hit another 3-pointer and then
Mason Casner took on Bo Collins and got to the line, hitting two of two to make
it 50-42. Tyler New scored off a drive with 3:23 left to end a scoring drought,
but then North Nodaway kept coming as Ethan Fry hit a 3-pointer to cut it to
52-45 with 2:33 left, still plenty of time.
But after Blaine Clements picked up his fifth foul, the
momentum began to swing back in Worth County’s favor as Tyler New went four for
four from the line, Caleb New added another free throw, and Karson Briner scored
from inside to make it 59-45 with 33 seconds left.
