NEN Gets 15th Straight Superior FFA Rating; Corby Schmitz Named New FFA President

Northeast Nodaway’s FFA, under the direction of Philip Doty, got its 15th straight “Superior Chapter” award from the state and they sent six teams to state this year, a record. In honor of the occasion, John Turner of Tri-State Ford presented a National $1,000 Built Ford Tough Scholarship to Gerry Runde.

New officers were named for the upcoming school year. Named were Corby Schmitz (President), Reed McIntyre and Madelynn Mattson (Vice-Presidents), Brea Miller (Secretary), Trevor Henggeler and Mitchell Sherry (Treasurers), Angela Standiford (Reporter), Paige West (Sentinel), Saige Kohlleppel (Chaplain), and Kami Adwell (Historian). They took their places at the end of the banquet, which was held Thursday.

Six different teams went to state, some of which completely surprised Doty. For only the second time in history, they fielded an Ag Mechanic team. Despite having only three members in Dakota Auffert, Dylan Boulting, and Maverick Price, they were able to go to state this year.

For the first time in Northeast Nodaway FFA history, an Agronomy team was formed, and they went to state as well. Members were Chet Spire, Gerry Runde, Maggie Schmitz, and Colton Wilmes.
The Dairy Foods Team has gone to state each of the last 14 years for Northeast. They took first in two different contests. Members were Madelynn Mattson, Corby Schmitz, Blair Stoll, Anne Schieber, and Delaney McIntyre. Not only did they do well at state, Anne Schieber got a Group I rating, the highest, and got two credit hours from Missouri State.

Other teams that went to state were the Nursery & Landscape Team (Rory Bredlow, Cassy Redden, Angela Standiford, Paige West), Horses (Kami Adwell, Saige Kohlleppel, Jozy Hopper, Torri Kephart), and Farm Management (Ethan Adwell, Mitchell Sherry, Reed McIntyre, Nathan Schieber).
Other teams that competed in contests were Floriculture (Brea Miller, Sam Price), and Dairy Cattle (Ben Boswell, Trevor Henggeler, Brayden Munns, Carson Runde, Lane Dack, Dylan Wilmes).

Besides Anne Schieber getting a Group I rating and a lot of recognition at State FFA, there were several other NEN members who got state and regional recognition as well. Four different students, Dakota Auffert, Maverick Price, Gerry Runde, and Chet Spire got their State FFA Degree; this was the most students from NEN who had gotten that degree in a year. Dakota Auffert received an Area Proficiency Award, getting 1st Place in Sheep Production. He also got the Area Star Farmer Award.
The Northeast Nodaway FFA has plans to make their program even better in coming years. They plan to put in a learning kitchen lab, which will make it easier for them to prepare and practice for contests. They also have started up a Greenhouse, which Maggie Schmitz has spent a lot of hours tending to in her spare time.

The following students got Leadership Awards – Ben Boswell, Lane Dack, Trevor Henggeler, Jozy Hopper, Torri Kephart, Justin Miller, Brayden Munns, Rachelle Rodriguez, Carson Runde, Dylan Wilmes, Kami Adwell, Chase Atkins, Levi Boulting, Saige Kohlleppel, Madelynn Mattson, Delaney McIntyre, Cassy Redden, Anne Schieber, Corby Schmitz, Angela Standiford, Blair Stoll, Austin Welch, Paige West, Drew Wiederholt, Ethan Adwell, Rory Bredlow, Noah Briney, Spencer Gray, Reed McIntyre, Brea Miller, Sam Price, Nathan Schieber, Mitchell sherry, Dakota Auffert, Dylan Boulting, Maverick Price, Gerry Runde, Maggie Schmitz, Sonja Solidum, Chet Spire, and Colton Wilmes.
