It was a tale of two games as the North Nodaway Mustangs and the South Nodaway Longhorns faced off Tuesday night in a makeup of a game that was suspended by rain. North Nodaway was leading 2-0 when play was suspended, but South Nodaway was threatening with runners at the corners with nobody out in the top of the fourth. Mustang pitcher Keagan O'Riley walked two batters to force in a run, cutting North Nodaway's lead to 2-1.
Makayla Cross reached on an error to lead off when the shortstop threw away a grounder, making it all the way to second. Alisha Davison ran for her at second. One out later, Chloe Schimming hit a shot past the right fielder all the way to the wall and circled the bases to make it 4-1. She saved her home runs for the first and last games of the regular season; against Worth County, she hit one over the fence to send it to extra innings in David Carroll's first game coaching this squad. Instead of clinging by their fingernails against a team hungry for a win, North Nodaway had it under control as the pitching and fielders did the rest defensively. Carroll said that the biggest area of improvement from the first game was the fielding. Case in point -- second baseman Bethany Herndon snagged a grounder from behind the bag at second to take a hit away in the Longhorn fifth for the final out.
From there, David Carroll's Mustangs pulled away to a safe lead before a final rally by South Nodaway made it 8-3. Breann O'Riley reached on an error to lead off the fifth and later came home on a passed ball. Kelsi Oberhauser walked and took second on a wild pitch later in the inning; she later scored on Madison Thompson's double that slipped just past the center fielder's glove to make it 6-1.
In the sixth, Kristin Herndon reached on a leadoff walk after taking two close pitches on a 2-2 count. Chloe Schimming bunted and the pitcher and third baseman tangled up going after it. The ensuing throw plunked Schimming and rolled down the first base line as the fleet-footed Herndon came around to score. Schimming was shaken up, but she recovered enough to make it around to third before South Nodaway could get it back in. Bethany Herndon hit a pop fly behind first. The second baseman hustled to get over there, but it popped out of her glove and dropped in, scoring Ashley Thompson, who ran for Schimming.
