Tiger Softball Winning Streak Reaches Five Games

Worth County's winning streak in softball reached five games as they showed that their tournament win in Eagleville was no accident. They started off by beating South Nodaway 8-1 Monday; they started off slowly, but then got stronger as the game progressed to get the win.

The next day, they had to travel a long ways to face Princeton, whom they had beaten in Eagleville. Princeton played better than they did the first time, but Worth County used several outstanding defensive plays to thwart some Blue Tiger rallies and win the game. Coach David Gilland started Payton Adwell in the Princeton game, but she struggled in the first two innings, so Rikky Hunt came on in relief and pitched the remaining five innings for the 6-4 win.

With the win, the Tigers won their 8th and 9th game, which is the most they've won during Gilland's tenure. It matches their highest win total since 2008.

Playing back to back nights did not bother the Tigers, who clung by their fingernails throughout the Princeton game. Sidney Troutwine made an outstanding catch to kill one Blue Tiger rally. Adrian Fletchall caught a line drive and doubled another Princeton runner off base. Freshman catcher Haley Hunt picked a runner off third to kill another Princeton rally; that saved a run because the bases had been loaded and the next batter walked.

Payton Adwell led the team in hitting, batting 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI's. Rachael Gardner added one for the Tigers. Worth County took a 6-2 lead going into the seventh, and then held off a late Princeton rally for the win, something they had trouble doing earlier in the year. "The girls are playing with a lot more confidence," said Coach David Gilland. As an example, Brooklyn White was out of the Princeton game with an injury and Abbi Caddenhead, who had not played in the field all year, stepped in and played flawless defense in the outfield.
