North Nodaway nearly lost the lead against Worth County Tuesday in the girls game, but held off the Tigers down the stretch to come away with a 34-32 victory. The game showed how much Worth County had improved over last year; with nearly the same set of players, they were buried by the Mustangs last year, but took them down to the wire this year.
The Mustangs could have won by more, but missed a ton of free throws to keep things interesting. Worth County struggled with point guard Kynah Steele on the bench in the second quarter, but then started making use of their size in the third to get back in the game by winning the battle of the boards. But then North Nodaway got some key boards in the fourth and made just enough free throws to preserve the lead.
The game started off tight in the first quarter, with neither team able to get a lead of two possessions. Jacquelyn Cline had 5 and Saryn Brown 4 as North Nodaway led 9-6 after one. Worth County countered with a basket from Taylor Sanders off a loose ball carom, two free throws from Alison Anderson, and a coast to coast drive from Hailey Adwell.
Saryn Brown went coast to coast against Worth County’s press and made a free throw to make it 10-6. Ali Brown went backdoor to make it 10-8, but then Tiger point guard Kynah Steele went out with foul trouble and North Nodaway started taking over. Kelsey Barcus hit two free throws after keeping a possession alive. Saryn Brown dove on the floor to save a possession and North Nodaway got a timeout called right before she was tied up. That led to a Jacquelyn Cline drive and kickout to Ellaina Renfro on the left side to make it 14-8. Saryn Brown hit Lauren Herndon for three, and then MacKenzie Titus skipped one to Kelsey Barcus for a baseline shot to make it 19-8 before Madelyn Runde’s drive for Worth County made it 19-10.
But then Worth County started making good use of its size advantage on the boards and leading scorer Ali Brown finally got untracked. Saryn Brown tried to take over for North Nodaway, getting a basket in transition and stealing an inbounds pass to make it 23-12, but then Hailey Adwell’s putback with 3:13 left made it 23-16 as Worth County started chipping away. Jacquelyn Cline sliced through pressure and scored to make it 27-18, but then Autumn Cousatte, one of the most improved players from the start of the year for Worth County, cleaned up an offensive glass for the Tigers, and Kynah Steele cleaned up another to make it 27-22 after three. Worth County was able to take control of the boards in the quarter, carrying a 29-20 rebounding advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers got as close as one point in the fourth, but North Nodaway won the battle of the boards in the period, 9-3 and got just enough free throws to win. Ali Brown’s inside shot made it one possession with 4:35 left off a pass from Kara Staton at 29-26, but Lauren Herndon’s putback made it 31-26. Worth County kept coming as Hailey Adwell got a pass from Alison Anderson in transition and Kynah Steele got loose against the North Nodaway defense and got a pass from Ali Brown to make it 31-30.
Lauren Herndon knocked an errant North Nodaway shot off the gold shirts to keep a possession alive, and Jacquelyn Cline hit two free throws with 1:33 left to stop the bleeding and make it 33-30. But then Alison Anderson, with a defender in her face in the high post, took a pass from Kynah Steele and banked it home to make it 33-32 with 1:20, still plenty of time.
Saryn Brown missed two free throws with 1:05 left, and Alison Anderson got the board with a chance for Worth County to take the lead. But Ali Brown missed a shot and a putback try. Lauren Herndon’s try at a dagger three and MacKenzie Titus’ putback try both went astray and the ball went out off the blue shirts with 31 seconds left. Worth County got the ball into Ali Brown on the right baseline, but MacKenzie Titus contested it well with 21 seconds left, and Saryn Brown got the defensive board.
North Nodaway ran the clock all the way down to 5.7 seconds left, and then Saryn Brown made one out of two free throws to make it 34-32. Ali Brown got the defensive board with 5 seconds left, and a timeout gave Worth County a last chance. Worth County threw a desperation heave at the basket, as North Nodaway defended well. There was a heartstopping moment as the ball caromed through a crowd of gold jerseys with time still left on the clock, but nobody could secure it before time expired.

Aydan Blackford Leads JH Mustangs Past Tigers
Worth County’s junior high boys completely outplayed North Nodaway on the floor, but it was North Nodaway who somehow came away with the 32-29 victory Tuesday night. For Worth County, Tyler New had 17 steals, and North Nodaway turned the ball over 31 times, while Worth County only surrendered the ball 10 times.
Both sides have found wins hard to come by this year, although North Nodaway has been showing improvement; last year, they were winless, while they came into Tuesday’s game with one win under their belts. Worth County was also sitting at one lone win this year.
But North Nodaway took the lead and held it for nearly the whole game, although Worth County was always close. Tyler New’s free throw gave Worth County its only lead of the game at 3-2 at the 4:45 mark of the first, but then Peyton Kreps hit a triple and another shot to make it 7-3. Aydan Blackford started driving to the hole at will against Worth County, getting six of his 17 points, and Damian Dailey hit an inside shot as North Nodaway led 13-9 after one quarter.
Jeremiah Dobbins’ three point play put the Mustangs in front as much as 18-9 before Worth County started coming back. Tyler New scored off a steal, Elias Alarcon added a baseline three, and Levi Cassavaugh scored a three off a Tyler New steal as Worth County closed to within 20-17 at the break.
Levi Cassavaugh started the scoring off with a drive to make it 20-19 to start the third, but then Aydan Blackford started going to the rack again at will, scoring six straight points to put the Mustangs out of danger again at 26-19. Damian Dailey’s free throw with 3.1 seconds left made it 29-21.
But then Tanner Ridge took a charge on Blackford to start the fourth, and the momentum started swinging back in Worth County’s favor as Elias Alarcon hit a shot from the right baseline after Levi Cassavaugh kept a possession alive with an offensive board, Tyler New scored off a drive down the left baseline, and New got a steal off the press and got it to Cassavaugh to make it 29-27 with 4:18 left. Worth County only had two fouls at that point, which meant they could afford to be very aggressive on defense.
The score was stuck at 29-27 until Aydan Blackford got it into Jeremiah Dobbins to make it two possessions at 31-27 with 1:59 left. Tyler New got a steal off the press to cut it to 31-29 with 1:20 left, but following an Elias Alarcon steal off the press, New missed both free throws with one minute left. New got yet another steal off the press, but Levi Cassavaugh’s three for the lead missed and went out of bounds giving the ball back to North Nodaway.
This time, North Nodaway beat the press and Tyler New fouled Blackford on a breakaway attempt, and Blackford hit one of two with 40 seconds left to make it 32-29. Tyler New got a good look at a tying three with 16 seconds, but it went in and out. North Nodaway threw the ball away against the press, and Worth County had one last chance. But the Tigers could not get a three off and Tyler New’s runner was off. Tanner Ridge was fouled on the offensive board with 0.5 seconds left, and he missed the first and committed a violation on the second try. North Nodaway successfully inbounded it to run out the clock.

Jacquelyn Cline hits 14; Junior High Mustang Girls Stampede the Rockets
North Nodaway came off a high after a thrilling victory over Worth County. But West Nodaway came out and tried to make a stand, playing the Mustangs tough for most of the first quarter. The only baskets North Nodaway managed were a couple of baseline looks from Lauren Herndon and Kelsey Barcus. But all of a sudden, Jacquelyn Cline blew by several Rocket defenders at the 1:44 mark of the first like they weren’t even there, and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game.
Saryn Brown got loose behind the Rocket defense, hit a free throw, missed her second, but kept the possession alive by saving it to Kelsey Barcus, who passed it to to Cline to start the second. She drove and got on the line, hitting two free throws to make it 9-0. Cline followed with another after getting a steal, walking a tightrope down the left side, and getting to the rim, and Saryn Brown swiped the ensuing inbounds pass to make it 12-0.
Sarah Young finally put the Rockets on the board with a pair of free throws, but then Sarah Chesnut, who was flying all over the gym that night, got a steal and then frustration set in for the Rockets, as one of their players hammered her intentionally on the way up and Chesnut hit both free throws to make it 14-2 with 3:14 left. Angeline Parker won a scrum for a loose ball and got on the line, hitting two free throws with 1:06 left, and then Saryn Brown drove against two Rocket defenders and hit two more to make it 18-2 at the break. The difference between the Worth County and West Nodaway games was that North Nodaway missed most of their free throws and were unable to pull away from the Tigers. But against West Nodaway, they were able to hit their free throws and they pulled away. Ten of their 18 points in the first half came from the line.

Junior High Mustang Boys Blitzed by Rockets
North Nodaway’s junior high boys had every reason Thursday to come into the game against West Nodaway on a high note. They had just won their second game of the year following a winless season the year before. But they were completely outclassed and outplayed, falling to West Nodaway 46-22 Thursday.
Bracxten Rohlmeier dropped a three on North Nodaway just over one minute into the game, and then all hell broke loose for the next five minutes as the Mustangs could not solve the Rocket press or keep the Rockets off the boards. They threw the ball away seven times in the first quarter, gave up five offensive boards, and only collected three boards total in the period as West Nodaway raced out to a 15-0 lead after one.
North Nodaway managed to stem the bleeding to some extent in the second quarter. They rebounded the ball better in the quarter, with Damian Dailey collecting five in the period. They did a better job of bringing the ball up the floor against the press. They got down 20-0 after Kayden Conn’s guarded three, but then Darron Bix’s free throw broke the ice for North Nodaway. Dailey’s putback was the first made basket for North Nodaway and then Kade Emery tipped one to himself for a basket at the buzzer to make it 24-5.

Tiger Football Flips the Script, Wins Districts Over Stanberry 32-20
Worth County flipped the script against Stanberry Friday, outplaying them to take the 32-20 win to keep their season going. They will play Pattonsburg at Worth County Saturday at 1 pm. The winner will play Mound City or Orrick at the State Championship Game.
It was a bitterly cold night, with the temperature at 20 degrees with a wind chill of 7 degrees. The temperature steadily dropped throughout the evening, falling to 15 by the end of the game. The last time the Tigers had played in conditions this cold, with the field covered with snow, was back in 1995, when Worth County successfully invaded Nodaway-Holt and won 38-26 in the State Semifinal Game. They would go on to win the State Championship Game that year over North Andrew. Worth County lost a 26-24 game to North Andrew in conditions that were nearly as cold in 1997, although no snow was on the ground for that one.
Worth County has struggled in bad weather before, and it looked like a long cold night was in store after Trey Schieber ran back the opening kickoff for a score and ran in the extra points uncontested to put Stanberry up 8-0 just 14 seconds into the game.
But then Worth County pushed the ball right down the field and scored. On third and seven at the 26, Caleb Parman bounced outside for 17 yards for a first down to the Bulldog 37. Andrew Alarcon continued his late-season rise, picking up 16 more to the 21. A holding penalty set the ball back to the 30, but then Andrew Alarcon burst through a big hole for a score with 9:07 left to make it 8-6.
In the first game, Stanberry would threaten, Worth County would nearly hold, only to give up a big play on third and long or fourth and long. Stanberry marched into Worth County territory as Cole Durbin aired it out to Collin Sager for 18 yards to the Tiger 30. But then Jaxon Anderson sacked Durbin to set up fourth and 13, and the Tigers got off the field after a bad snap led to a misfired pass to an open Kameron Wallace to give the ball back to the Tigers on downs. Worth County was able to get off the field enough on Stanberry’s long yardage situations to keep the game under control; they put much better pressure on Durbin this time and did a much better job of containing him after he had burned the Tigers in the semifinal game last year and in the regular season game this year.

They got as far as the 16 on fourth and three at the 16, but Bryant McCord was stopped for no gain on fourth and three. On their first play, Caleb Parman shot through a hole past his left guard and outran everyone to the house from 50 yards out with 11:45 left in the second to make it 12-8.

The tackling broke down and Durbin found some rare daylight for 12 yards to the 33, and Schieber converted a fourth and one to the 21 with a quick burst up the middle. But then Durbin lost yardage on consecutive plays and Stanberry turned to a play they had burned Worth County with, when they slipped Trey Schieber out of the backfield and into the end zone for a critical score. Shirley Marie Troutwine, age 81, Grant City, Missouri, formerly of Sheridan, Missouri died Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Orilla’s Way Residential Care Facility in Grant City.
Shirley was born July 23, 1937 in Sheridan, Missouri. She was the daughter of H. E. “Jack” and Eva Marie (White) Thummel.
Shirley was united in marriage to Nathan “Junior” Troutwine, September 5, 1953 in Sheridan. To this union three children were born, Mike, Russ and Jill. Shirley always loved her kids through the good times as well as the bad. Her care and concern for all those she knew was evident, always put others before herself. She will always be remembered for her quiet strength, dignity, grace which will continue to inspire her family and others.
Shirley was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church and truly enjoyed the fellowship of the Willing Workers Women’s group of the church.
Shirley enjoyed live country music. She liked listening to Junior and her sons when they played music together.
Some of the things Shirley liked visiting about were, holidays spent with family on the farm, deer season and all it involved and her cooking days for everyone at the Boar’s Nest.
Shirley day was always brightened when she received visits from her grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Junior on June 19, 1999.
Her survivors include: two sons, Mike (Tami) Troutwine, Russ (Debbie) Troutwine and daughter Jill (Nick) Larison, all of Sheridan, Missouri, brother Jack (Ruth Ann) Thummel, Maryville, Missouri, sister Patty (Jack) Fisher, Gaynor, Missouri, ten grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other friends and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, November 12, 2018 at the Andrews-Hann Funeral Home in Grant City. Burial will be in the Sheridan Cemetery (Vanskyock Addition), Sheridan.
