Turnovers Doom Panthers in Week Two

Pattonsburg came back down to earth Friday as turnovers doomed them in their 82-32 loss to South Holt, which has everyone back from the team that gave Platte Valley a run for its money last year. They put up similar numbers to their week one win against Rock Port, but the turnover bug was too much to overcome against a good team.

Gage Iddings completed 28 of his 35 pass attempts for 384 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. Camden Griffith completed five of his seven passes for 33 yards. 

Wyatt Maize had six catches for 100 yards. Camden Griffith had 5 catches for 124 yards, Landon Preston 8 catches for 94 yards, Alex Young 1 catch for 9 yards, Daltyn Sperry 8 catches for 54 yards, and Gavin Humphrey 5 catches for 47 yards. 

Defensively, Gage Iddings and Gavin Humphrey had 5 tackles each, Wyatt Maize and Landon Preston 4 each, Camden Griffith, Alex Young, Daltyn Sperry, and Alex Arnold 2 each, and Beau Gibson 1. 

The Panthers will try to get back on the winning track Friday against Princeton.

Prairie Days at Dunn Ranch September 9th

The past and present role of native grasslands in the rolling hills of northwest Missouri will be celebrated at a free Prairie Day event on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Dunn Ranch Prairie and Pawnee Prairie near Eagleville. Visitors can tour exhibits and display tables, take wildflower walks, and ride on a wagon to see bison grazing on prairie in Harrison County. This event is hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Loess Hills and Osage Trails Missouri Master Naturalists.

Visitors will get a glimpse of a prairie ecosystem that once dominated northwest Missouri.

“Our increasingly rare prairies harbor dozens of unique plants and animals not regularly encountered,” said Dillon Freiburger, MDC natural history biologist. “Prairie days is an excellent opportunity to view these species and hear stories about them from experts.”

A guided birding hike will be offered from 7 to 9 a.m. at MDC’s Pawnee Prairie Conservation Area northwest of Dunn Ranch. Exhibits, displays, and departure points for hikes and the bison tour will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at TNC’s shelter across from the ranch headquarters, 16970 W. 150th St., Hatfield, Mo. MDC experts will be present to discuss the role of native grasses in cattle forage rotations. Missouri Western State University professors and students will discuss prairie plants and critters. A storyteller will talk about how Native Americans interacted with the wildlife and plants on the prairie.

Obituary -- Virginia Robison 1936-2023

Virginia Lee (Auten) (Morrow) Robison, 86 of Grant City, Missouri passed from this life on August 31, 2023 at her home. She was born October 24, 1936 at Parnell, Missouri. Her parents were Pete and Florence (New) Auten. 

In 1955, Virginia was united in marriage to Chadrick Dwain Morrow in Worth County, Missouri. They divorced in 1964.  She married Don Robison in 1966 and they later divorced in 1977. 

Virginia was preceded in death by her very Dear Friend William (Bill) Fleetwood of Blockton, Iowa, her parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 granddaughter. 

She is survived by her children: Chadrick (Rick) D. Morrow II, Renea G. Smyser, Edward (Ed) L. Morrow, Almeda M. Owens, Carla L Welch, 12 grandkids, 21 great-grandkids, 3 great-great-grandkids, sister Vivian Colman and brother Leslie Auten.  

The body has been cremated and family will have a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements are under direction of Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Missouri.

Courthouse News for August 30th, 2023

On August 22nd, during the Softball Jamboree at North Harrison, the ambulance was dispatched; it was headed northbound on Route 69.

On August 22nd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Calvin Heinrich (39) of King City alleging Passing a Bad Check in the amount of $6,111.83 (Felony). 

On August 22nd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against John Shanks (24) of Stanberry alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving, Failure to Obey Orders of a Law Enforcement Officer, and DWI.

On August 23rd, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department reported that a bomb threat was called into the Gilman City School at around 1:30 pm, Northwest Mo Info reported. Students had been dismissed and most staff were gone as well. The caller was believed to be from out of the area. No suspicious items were found. There is believed to be no threat to students or staff.

On August 23rd at 10:11 am, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2012 GMC Terrain driven by Frances Baughman (51) of Braddyville was southbound and a 1999 Ford F-350 driven by Judith Blay (77) of Villisca was northbound on Route 71 south of 2nd Street in Clearmont. The Ford F-350 was attempting to make a left turn and turned into the path of the GMC, which struck it in the rear passenger side. Baughman received minor injuries and was taken to Clarinda Regional Medical Center. Blay was not injured.

On August 24th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2005 Peterbuilt Tractor driven by Raymond Morriss (65) of Guilford was northbound on Route KK north of 180th Street, four miles northwest of Burlington Junction at around 9:40 am. He swerved to avoid a deer, causing his trailer to travel off the roadway. The trailer’s load shifted, causing it and the Peterbuilt to overturn. Morriss received moderate injuries and was taken to Mosaic in Maryville. 

On August 24th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Hernan Hipolito Lopez-Gomez alleging Tampering with a Motor Vehicle. Bond was set at $20,000, cash only.

On August 24th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Morgan Smith (29) of Ridgeway alleging three counts Tampering with a Utility Meter. An affidavit filed by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department alleges that the defendant had her water shut off for nonpayment by the City of Ridgeway. On three different occasions, the defendant allegedly turned the water back on.

On August 26th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Matthew Doty (39) of Cainsville in Harrison County on a charge of DWI.

On August 27th at 12 midnight, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2008 Lexus RX350 driven by Rhonda Wiederholt (48) of Maryville was southbound on Route 71 at Wilcox when she traveled off the west side, struck an embankment, went airborne, struck the ground, and overturned. Wiederholt and a 13 year old girl received minor injuries.

On August 28th, a new Missouri law banning motorists from using handheld phones while driving went into effect. The National Safety Council reported that distracted driving crashes in Missouri resulted in at least 801 fatalities and 200,000 crashes between 2012 and 2021. Prohibitions include physically holding or supporting a cell phone with any part of the body; typing, writing, sending, or reading text messages; recording, posting, sending, or broadcasting video (including video calls and social media posts); and watching a video or movie.

On August 28th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Josh Standerford (31) of Bedford in Worth County on charges of DWI (Prior) and Driving While Revoked. 

On August 29th, Stanberry canceled classes for the funeral of Collin Sager (20) of Stanberry, who died while working on a grain bin in rural Buchanan County.

On August 29th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Nicholas Orozco (38) of Topeka (KS) alleging Possession of Controlled Substance. 

On August 29th, Jeremy Johnston (45) of Chetopa (KS) was arrested in Nodaway County on a warrant from the State of Kansas (Escape from Custody).

Charges listed are merely allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Tigers Bounce Back Against Mound City 74-18

Worth County bounced back against Mound City with a convincing 74-18 win over a struggling Panther squad. Mound City was coming into the game shorthanded as Chase Meyer, one of their key linemen and tacklers, was out for the game from an injury from the Stanberry game. By contrast, Worth County came into the game healthy, getting Brayden Stevens back from an injury that kept him out in the Platte Valley loss. Mound City has fallen on hard times the last two years; they showed flashes of the form that brought them multiple state titles, most recently in 2018 and 2019, but then struggled at other times.

Mound City kicked off to start the game and Sawyer Thurman returned it to his own 35. Landon Wilmes picked up five to the 40 after getting a block from Grant McIntyre. Tyler New got a block from Bo Collins and picked up 12 to the 28. Landon Wilmes picked up five more to the 23 after getting a block from Elias Alarcon, Tyler New got another block from Alarcon to the 6, and Landon Wilmes followed the blocking of Alarcon into the end zone with 9:58 left to put Worth County on the board. Elias Alarcon continued to carry the Tigers on his shoulders, clearing the path for Tyler New to score the extra points and make it 8-0.

Worth County was still victimized by the big plays that victimized them against Platte Valley; on third and 18 at their own 14, Mound City gave the ball to Cameron Felts on a quick hitter and he took it 66 yards down to the Tiger 10 before Bo Collins ran him down and saved a touchdown. The Tigers then made a goal line stand after a false start, one of several Mound City had, backed them up. Elias Alarcon, Landon Wilmes, and Grant McIntyre swarmed Ernie Peters under for no gain, then Kolten Smith dropped Cole Gillenwater for no gain. Kolten Smith showed a lot of improvement from last week, firing off the ball, getting rid of blocks, and flying up and down the line of scrimmage to make tackles. 

Mound City was filtering different runningbacks in and out throughout the night, but it didn't seem to matter who they put in there as Worth County would swarm them under. August Meadows tried the left side, only to run into Bo Collins and Lucas Frisch and then Tyler New stopped Nick Ivey for no gain as the Tigers got the ball back on downs at the 10.

With Elias Alarcon out with a cut, the blocking broke down, then a long run from Tyler New was called back to the 30 by a block in the back. Bo Collins dropped a ball that was thrown a little too far, but then Landon Wilmes broke one 25 yards after a block from Ethan Lininger down to the 25. A force in junior high football, Ethan started as the center Friday and picked up right where he left off; he and Elias formed a two man wrecking crew on the line. Tyler New ran right through the right side like nobody was there, Grant McIntyre caught a bubble screen to the four, and Tyler New outran the purple shirts into the end zone with 4:07 left. Bo Collins caught the ensuing pass to make it 16-0.

But then the game looked like it might follow the script of the Platte Valley game, in which Worth County got an early lead, only for Platte Valley to wipe it out with some big plays. First, on third and 18 at the Panther 34, August Meadows caught a 15 yard pass from Cole Gillenwater to the Tiger 31. A false start moved it back to the 36, but then Chauncey Brown caught a long pass to the 12. A false start moved them back to the 17, and then Creyton Roup picked up two to the 15. Then, the pass coverage woes that hurt Worth County burned them again as nobody picked up Kane Derr and he was all alone for a score at the start of the second quarter to cut it to 16-6. Grant McIntyre broke up the ensuing extra point pass.

Unlike the Platte Valley game, Worth County struck right back after Mound City boomed the kickoff into the end zone as Landon Wilmes picked up a block from Ethan Lininger and that was all he needed as he took it 65 yards to the house with 10:51 left. Grant McIntyre caught the extra point pass to make it 24-6.

Mound City went back to the quick hitter that worked for them earlier, but this time, Worth County was ready for it and Lucas Frisch was there to drop Nick Ivey. Kolten Smith and Landon Wilmes dropped Gillenwater attempting a keeper, and then Elias Alarcon came free and hurried Gillenwater into an incompletion as Grant McIntyre was there for the breakup, forcing a three and out. Worth County started on their own 30 and Tyler New picked up blocks from Ethan Lininger, Grant McIntyre, and Landon Wilmes as he picked up 15 yards into Mound City territory at the 35. Tyler weaved his way to the 19, and then Brayden Stevens caught a short pass, got a block from Bo Collins, and got to the 10. Frisch got a block from Lininger to the 8 for a first down, and then Tyler New threw a strike to Grant McIntyre for a score with 7:23 left in the half. Landon Wilmes caught a flat pass and picked up a block from Bo Collins into the end zone to make it 32-8.

The Panthers could not do anything again as Landon Wilmes broke up a pass, Bo Collins dropped Roup for a loss of three, and then Tyler New came on a blitz and forced an incompletion. On fourth and 10 from their own 36, Mound City went for it, but Grant McIntyre broke up a pass on fourth down and Worth County was in good field position. A questionable block in the back -- Elias Alarcon hit his own guy -- moved it all the way back to the Tiger 35, but it didn't matter as Bo Collins atoned for his earlier drop as Tyler New aired one out to him for a score with 6:00 left. Landon Wilmes got blocks from Ethan Lininger, Grant McIntyre, and Lucas Frisch to add the extra points to make it 40-6.

Kolten Smith kicked off, and most of his kicks were knuckle balls that were really hard for Mound City to field. One was mishandled at the Panther 25 and Worth County got a free possession when Lucas Frisch recovered it there. Frisch got a block from Ethan Lininger to the 17, Brayden Stevens got a shovel pass to the 16, and Tyler New got a block from Elias Alarcon down to the 9. Lucas Frisch got stacked up for no gain, but then Tyler New threw a strike to Grant McIntyre, who beat three defenders and somehow kept his feet inbounds as he gathered it in. Brayden Stevens' catch and run made it 48-6 with 3:32 left.

Worth County forced another three and out, but with time running out and Worth County faced with fourth and four at their own 21, Tyler New threw behind Grant McIntyre and Worth County gave up the ball on downs. With 15 seconds left, another breakdown occurred and Chauncey Brown was all alone for a pass to cut the Worth County lead to 48-12.

Mound City had the ball to start the second half, and another score would have given them hope. But Worth County forced a three and out as Bo Collins ran down Gillenwater trying a keeper, Creyton Roup tried the left side but met Bo and three other defenders, and Gillenwater threw it away on third down. A short kick gave Worth County a short field at the Panther 34, and Landon Wilmes took a power sweep to the 21. Landon picked up a block from Ethan Lininger to the 10, and then Tyler New threw a strike to Grant McIntyre with 7:20 left to make it 54-12. The whole second half was played with a running clock.

A 12 yard pass from Gillenwater to Keaton Zembles gave Mound City a first down at the 37, but Mound City gave up the ball on downs at their own 38. The Panthers showed flashes of their glory days when they stiffened up drove Worth County back to the 40. But then Landon Wilmes caught a pair of passes for 23 and 16 yard down to the one, and then Lucas Frisch took it the rest of the way with 11:36 left to make it 60-12.

A late hit and a facemask fueled Mound City's next drive as they used the short field to get into the end zone with 6:59 left as Kane Derr scored from three yards out. Mound City pinned Worth County into the end zone with one of several long kickoffs and they started on their own 15. Landon Wilmes got a block from Carter Chapman to the 26, and then Worth County started subbing freely down the stretch. Cole Ruby picked up six yards behind the blocking of Ethan Lininger and Carter Chapman, and then Lucas Frisch got 13 to the Panther 35. Worth County threw an incomplete pass, but then Cole Ruby got nine to the 26 behind blocks from Ethan Lininger and Karson Briner, and then a facemask put it on the six. Hayden Sanders, now at quarterback, ran into a swarm of purple shirts, but he showed the same form that his dad, P.J., had back in his playing days as he broke tackle after tackle into the end zone with four minutes left to make it 66-18.

Grant McIntyre got a scoop and score and Karson Briner got a pass from Hayden Sanders to round out the scoring and make it 74-18.
