Evergy West Files Two Rate Cases

Evergy Missouri West, Inc. d/b/a Evergy Missouri West (Evergy West) has filed a request with the Missouri Public Service Commission to adjust the fuel adjustment charge (FAC) on the bills of its electric customers.

Evergy West made two filings. In its first filing (Case No. ER-2023-0444), Evergy West proposes to adjust the FAC to reflect fuel and purchased power costs for the six month period of December 2022 through May 2023. The second case is Evergy West’s true-up filing (Case No. EO2023-0445). 

According to the filings, a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (kilowatt-hours) a month will see the monthly FAC charge drop by approximately $0.29 a month. The proposed change would take effect on September 1, 2023. 

Applications to intervene and participate in these cases must be filed no later than July 18, 2023, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-0360, or by using the Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) at www.psc.mo.gov .

Obituary -- Braxton Salcedo 1995-2023

Braxton Tyler Salcedo, 27, of San Luis Obispo, CA, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 29, 2023, in San Luis Obispo.

Braxton was born in Merriam, KS, on November 13, 1995.  He grew up in Maryville and graduated from Maryville High School in 2014.

He served his country proudly in the US Army.  He was a certified Special Forces scout sniper, and Ranger qualified for the Army National Guard.  

Braxton graduated from the University of Missouri/Columbia in 2021, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Engineering.  He had recently moved to San Luis Obispo and been working as a Biological Engineer with MicroBio Engineering.  

His memberships included the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia, MO, the James Edward Gray American Legion Post 100, Maryville, and the Sigma Phi Delta fraternity at MU.  He was a master certified scuba diver.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John E. Salcedo.

Braxton was a very passionate person and he was concerned about the environment.  He liked to travel; biking, hiking, riding his motorcycle, and watching sunsets.  He was a genuine person and enjoyed visiting and getting to know people.  He also liked to cook, go to concerts, play his guitar, go surfing and scuba diving.  

He leaves behind his parents, his father, John V. Salcedo, Maryville, MO, his mother Valerie Dack, Kansas City, MO, and his sister, McKenzie Salcedo, Kansas City, MO, also his paternal grandmother Janet Salcedo, St. Joseph, MO, and maternal grandparents, Larry and Donna Dack, Ravenwood, MO, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, and friends.

Services will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at the Bram Funeral Home, Maryville, MO.  Braxton will be cremated after the service.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8:00 PM, on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Bram Funeral Home.

Courthouse News for July 5th, 2023

On June 27th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Danny Owen (35) of Princeton in Harrison County on charges of Possession of Methamphetamine (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and No Seat Belt. Charges were filed the next day. Bond was set at $20,000, cash only.

On June 27th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Hayley Burkeybile (33) of Trenton in Harrison County on charges of Possession of Methamphetamine (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, No Seat Belt, and Failure to Register. Charges were filed the next day. Bond was set at $20,000, cash only.

On June 27th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Michael McBee (35) of New York (NY) alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident), No Insurance, No Valid License, and No Plates.

On June 29th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Makiah Drennen (18) of St. Joseph alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Driving While Revoked. Bond was set at $30,000 signature bond.

On June 29th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Sherry Young (46) of Maryville alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony) and Stealing.

On June 29th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Jennifer Miller (36) of Ravenwood alleging Harassment.

On June 29th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Amanda Vore (43) of Maryville alleging Stealing (Felony).

On June 30th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Savanah Summa (31) of Denver alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident) and Failure to Register.

On June 30th, Gentry Country Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Jose Regalado (41) of King City alleging Speeding (20-25 mph over) and Driving While Revoked. 

On June 30th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Tyler Parkhurst (29) of Albany alleging Domestic Assault.

On July 1st, a 2017 Jeep Wrangler driven by Dustin Beaty (46) of Bethany was eastbound on Route 136 one mile west of Stanberry at around 3:15 pm. The vehicle traveled off the south side down an embankment. It then struck a field entrance, went airborne, and overturned multiple times. A 13 year old passenger was killed. Beaty and another passenger, Angela Beaty (43) of Bethany, were seriously injured and transported to Mosaic in St. Joseph.

Charges listed are merely allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Brandon Craig Retires With 314 Softball Wins

Brandon Craig has retired as the softball coach of North Harrison with 314 career victories. That makes him the winningest softball coach in Shamrock softball history. He ends his career of 21 years with 314 wins, 170 losses, 12 HDC conference titles, 12 HDC tournament titles, seven district titles, and two trips to state.

Justin Joyner will be the new head coach, assisted by Kiley Gibson. Craig will continue to teach agriculture at the school and sponsor the FFA program.

In 2003, his second year at North Harrison, his team got off to a bad start. “I wanted to go dig a hole and bury myself,” he said. But then, the team caught fire, won conference, and kept right on winning, going to state that year.

The team went 15-7 in 2004, but dropped off in 2005. But Craig rebuilt the program and the Shamrocks won 18 games in 2009 and 22 games in 2014 and 2015. But try as they might, they could never get over the sectional hurdles. 

But in 2017, they finally got over the hurdles, beating Platte Valley 3-2 in Sectionals and Maysville in Quarterfinals, going back to state. They dropped a 4-2 heartbreaker to Canton in the semifinals, but recovered to beat Chafee 4-2 to get the third place trophy. 

In 2020, the country was still in the throes of COVID-19, and nobody knew if they would have school, let alone play any games. The entire spring season had been canceled. But North Harrison persevered in the adversity and won 20 games that year. They won their 56th straight HDC conference game and won their 10th straight conference tournament before they left for the Grand River Conference starting in 2021. 

In 2021, Craig won his 300th career game as his Shamrocks beat Mercer 11-4. In 2022, nobody expected much of the Shamrocks, seeding them low at Albany. But they gained some quality wins that year over State Quarterfinalist King City, no-hitters over Green City and Albany, Gallatin (21 wins), and Winston (20 wins) on their way to a 12-12 season.

Evelyn Groom is Oldest Woman, Jack Cottrell is Oldest Man at Allendale

Evelyn Groom was the oldest woman at the Allendale Fourth of July Breakfast Tuesday. She is about to turn 93. Betty Dunfee was a close second. Groom was accompanied by her son Mike. Jack Cottrell, also at 93, was the oldest man. 

Nola Olney, from California, was the farthest away. She lives 1,700 miles from Allendale. Galen and Joyce Gamel, formerly of Grant City and now from South Carolina, were a close second. 

Blake Dodson, at two months, was the youngest boy at 2 months. He is the son of Kevin and Meridee (Scott) Dodson, who make the trip from Tarkio to Allendale every year. Jane Sleep, daughter of Allison (Hunt) Sleep, at 10 months, was the youngest girl.

The celebration was held from 6 am to 10 am. Brad Gabriel of Agriland provided the gas for the cooking. Roger Wink provided the processing for the meat. Richard and Rosa Williams of the Allendale Baptist Church provided the bottled water. 

Veterans and members of the military were recognized. New this year was the Space Force, created a few years ago by President Donald Trump. It now has its own flag and anthem. It and the other five branches of the Armed Forces were recognized.

Recognized for their service to their country were Lee Mincy (Army), Melbourne Fletchall (Army), Joe Marshall (Army), Rick Frese (Army), Charles Kreitlow (Army), Ronnie Wilkinson (Air Force), Galen Gamel (Army), Ron Richards (Marines), Jack Cottrell (Army), Sean Cameron (Army), Ralph Kobbe (Army), Larry Jennings (Army), Paul Myers (Navy), Bill Calhoon (Air National Guard), Jim Coulson (Army), and Nola Olney (Navy). 

Obituary -- Colman Phillips 1975-2023

Colman Gene Phillips was born on May 7th, 1975, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He spent the first part of his life living in Mount Ayr with his mother and sister, Colleen and Truda Phillips.

When Colman was 13, his mom married Tom Kelly and the family moved to Redding, Iowa. Colman continued his education in Mount Ayr where he graduated with his sister in 1994. During his time in school, Colman  participated in football, wrestling, band, and other activities. After a brief stint in college, he enlisted in the United States Navy and spent 4 years where he received a commendation and an honorable discharge.

After his discharge from the Navy, Colman became a father of two children: Madison Phillips and Toby Phillips. He resided in Oregon until moving back to Iowa this past year where he met his fiancé Brenda Helbling.

Colman enjoyed traveling and made friends everywhere he went. The Navy afforded him the opportunity to explore foreign lands and he brought that love of sightseeing, picture taking, and story telling home and enjoyed sharing with anyone that would listen. He loved fishing, hunting, gun collecting, marbles, and stickers. He loved his family, friends, and his fiancé. Colman loved helping others and had a passion for helping fellow veterans. He lived life robustly and left a smile on the hearts of many.

Colman passed away June 29, 2023. He was preceded in death by his sister Truda DeBord; and grandparents Eldon & Sandra Campbell and Delores & Milton Milligan; and his cousin Anthony Stewart.

He leaves behind his 2 children Madison and Toby Phillips and granddaughter Delilah of Oregon; his parents Tom and Colleen Kelly of Redding, IA; his fiancé Brenda Helbling of Grandview, MO; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, a nephew, cousins, and a multitude of friends. He will be largely missed by his family and friends. His presence towered over most and leaves behind countless memories with all who knew him.

When you think of Colman, he would want you to remember his service to his country in the U.S. Navy, his love for his family and friends, and all the passion he had for helping others.

A memorial fund has been established to help disabled veterans at the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines.

Obituary -- Lavelle Rickabaugh 1918-2023

Lavelle Rickabaugh, 105, of Maryville, Missouri passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023 at the Nodaway Nursing Home.

Lavelle was born on April 22, 1918 in Worth County, Missouri to Albert F. and Nina F. (Henson) Rickabaugh. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and worked for the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Maryville and the American Legion Post 464. He and his wife were involved with delivering meals on wheels.  

Lavelle married Dorothy J. Fakes on May 19, 1939 in Maryville, Missouri. She preceded him in death on August 17, 2007. He was also preceded by his parents, son, Lynn Rickabaugh, grandson, Todd Rickabaugh, great-grandson, Josh Moore, brother, Rex Rickabaugh, sister, Retha Pride and a nephew, Richard Pride.

Survivors include his children, Kenneth (Betty) Rickabaugh, Desoto, Kansas, Charles Edward (Patricia) Rickabaugh, Brick, New Jersey, Phillip (Carla) Rickabaugh, Maryville, Missouri and Janice (Mike) Hainline, Maryville, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Nancy Rickabaugh, Maryville, Missouri; sister, Wilma Jean Godsey, Arlington Heights, Illinois; twenty grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services 10 am Thursday, July 6th at Price Funeral Home. Burial Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday, July 5th at the funeral home. Memorials can be made in care of the Nodaway County Senior Center.
