Jared Simmons was sent to the Boys State this year, the Grant City American Legion announced at their regular meeting Thursday. The Legion sends one Worth County student to that event annually.
Seven members were present: Jeremy Dale Baker, J.W. Harding, Jack Cottrell, Ralph Kobbe, Bob Hull, Harold Fletchall, and Wilbur Osborne.
Ralph reported that he had gotten some more names for the War Memorial Project.
New officers were elected for this year. Officers elected were Jeremy Dale Baker (commander), J.W. Harding (adjutant), Wilbur Osborne (treasurer), Joe Marshall (chaplain), Ralph Kobbe (Sgt. at Arms), and Jack Cottrell (vice-commander).
The legion furnished flowers for Alice Ridge, Ed Costin, and Terry Meek. The legion received $145 from memorial donations in memory of Ed Costin.

Obituary -- Alma Lee Watson 1938-2014
Alma Lee Watson, 75, Grant City, Missouri, was born
December 25, 1938 in Kansas
City, Missouri to Earl and
Winifred (Sutclisse) Lundy, and departed this life Wednesday, March 5,
2014 at Heartland Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Survivors include
her beloved companion Max Florea of the home in Grant
City, daughters, Teresa Ledgerwood, Raytown, and Paula Dunham, Kansas City,
sons, Scott Watson, Kansas City, Randy Watson, Liberty, sister Eva
Gray, Kansas City, brother Bernie Lundy, Independence,
eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, brother
Bill Lundy and husband Gerald. Thomas Watson.
A Visitation and
Celebration of Life is being planned for Alma
on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 1:00 to
3:00 P.M. at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home, Grant City, Missouri. Private Inurnment will be in Kansas City at a later date.
Department of Economic Development to Visit Grant City March 28th
The Missouri Department of Economic Development Director Mike Downing has set dates to take a team of economic development experts and visit Grant City. The date will be March 28th. They will visit Albany on the previous day, March 27th.
Six communities total were chosen during the annual Missouri Community Betterment Program conference held on October 20th and 21st, where Downing issued a competition to the community representatives in attendance. The first five attendees to email Downing that night on behalf of their city would receive a visit from the team to discuss their community's needs and help find solutions to local economic development issues. Due to a tie, six communities were offered visits.
Since the conference, DED and MCB have put together teams of specialists who have begun initial planning and research for the six selected communities. The teams hope to develop community development strategies to encourage business growth and job creation.
MCB is designed to help Missouri communities enhance their quality of life through community development, planning, and implementation. The program offers technical assistance to its participating communities. The competition provides a unique opportunity for communities to get exclusive hands-on advice from a team that is specially created for that community's needs.

Taryn Farnan Wills NEN Girls Past Stanberry
Taryn Farnan, playing through a lot of pain, had 22 points to carry Northeast Nodaway's girls past Stanberry 38-27 in the first round of districts. The game clinched Coach Vance Proffitt's first-even winning season either at NEN or North Nodaway as they went to 13-11 with the win. Dallis Coffelt helped at the other end, getting six blocks and a critical steal in the closing seconds. Taryn Farnan had 2 and Claudia Wiederholt and Brianna Riley had 1 each.
Northeast fell behind in the first half by as much as 12-8, but Kerrigan Adwell hit Taryn inside, Dallis Coffelt hit a shot from the wing with a defender in her face, and Jill Spire hit Taryn inside to put Northeast up 14-12.
But Stanberry had been playing excellent basketball after falling by 8 to Northeast in December, even getting wins over Braymer and Jefferson. They also had wins over Maysville and DeKalb in the King City Tournament. The reason was that their outside shooting had gotten much better and they had a lot more people who could shoot. Also, Kaleigh Wilmes had substantially improved her scoring since the two teams last played.
Wilmes' 3-pointer put Stanberry up by one in the third, and it looked like it would be down to the wire. But then Brianna Riley scored her first three points of the game off an emphatic drive and 3-point play with 1:41 left in the third to make it 19-17 and put Northeast up for good. That play permanently swung the momentum in Northeast's favor as they took control from there on out. It was similar to another play Brianna made when her only two points of the game permanently broke a CFX run earlier in the year and Northeast was able to reestablish control and win. Dallis Dawn hit Taryn at the buzzer to put Northeast up 21-17 as Northeast finally got their high-low game working. If Brianna gets to where she can take it to the basket like that all the time, she will be quite a force next year with her speed.
Wilmes hit a free throw, but then Taryn Farnan countered with two free throws, giving Northeast a five point lead at 23-18 with 6:15 left in the fourth. It was the first lead of more than four points for either team.
Dallis Coffelt rolled her ankle and had to come out and Stanberry was doubling Taryn, trying to get the ball out of her hands. But she was able to find Kerrigan Adwell all alone for a backdoor layup to make it 25-19 and Brianna blocked a shot on the other end as Northeast was able to hold the fort until Dallis came back. Taryn continued to carry the Bluejays, getting the next five points to make it 30-20 with 2:50 left.
Shaylynn Craig suddenly went off for Stanberry, making a 3-pointer to make it 30-23. Stanberry stole the ball on the ensuing possession, but Wilmes' 3-pointer was off the mark and a tieup on the rebound went to Northeast. Joel Scroggie's Monster Stuff Preserves NEN Boys Win Over Mercer
Joel Scroggie celebrated his 18th birthday by getting 15 points and 6 blocks, the last being a monster stuff of Bryer Noe's layup attempt with 2 seconds left that would have tied the game for Mercer and sent it into overtime. The stuff, which was clean, knocked Noe flat on his back as time expired to preserve Northeast's 35-33 win and Northeast Nodaway's boys picked up their 10th win and advanced in district play last Tuesday.
The game was close all the way, with no team leading by more than 4 at any point during the contest. Grant Widner's 3-pointer from the left corner put Mercer in front 30-28 with 1:57 left, but Garet Jackson, who had only two points up to that point, answered with 1:39 left after getting a pass from Shaun Burns to put Northeast in front 31-30. It was similar to another game that Garet had earlier this year when he was scoreless until getting a drive and hitting a game-winning 3-point play to bail Northeast out against CFX in the closing seconds.
Garet followed with two free throws and Mercer got a traveling call, but Northeast missed the front end of a one and one to open the door; Widner tied it up again at 33 with 35.4 seconds left. Mercer elected to press and Northeast got in trouble as they were able to funnel Shaun Burns to the side with 24 seconds left, but Northeast still had a timeout and used it. They set up a play and Steve Schulte hit Joel Scroggie with 15.4 seconds left to put Northeast up 35-33.
Mercer elected to rush it up the floor, but Joel was there at the other end for his fifth block, stuffing Noe's runner down the middle of the paint. Mercer got the offensive board and had a good weak side look, but Garet Jackson alertly fouled with 2.2 seconds left; Northeast still had fouls to give and it was on the floor. That set up the final heroics.
Besides Scroggie, Steve Schulte had 8 points, Garet Jackson had 7, and Shaun Burns had 5 and four assists. Steve Schulte had 9 tips for Northeast on defense while Garet Jackson had 6 and Shaun Burns 5.

Worth County Boys Falter to Jefferson in First Round
Worth County's boys played like state champions in the first quarter, getting Jefferson down 20-10 after the 6:23 mark of the second quarter, Unfortunately, they failed to play any kind of defense the rest of the way and fell apart on both ends of the floor, losing 70-35 after the carnage was all over. The boys had every reason to expect a better season than last time, when they only won three games. But they fell apart in many games that they had a chance to win and won only two games for the year.
After they took the lead, they forgot to guard Alex Holtman, who hit three 3-pointers to shoot them back into the game and Jefferson ran away with the game from there. Obviously demoralized, the Tigers even let the Jefferson third string outwork them in the closing minutes to make the margin even worse.
