Grant City Golf Club Reveals More Plans for Course Renovation

The Grant City Golf Club Board met on March 22nd to make plans for the DNR Grant for the Clubhouse and Community Room as well as renovation to the Golf Course. Janice Borey has submitted the grant to the Missouri DNR and they will know this fall if they have received the grant.

The DNR Grant will pay for a kitchen and handicapped restrooms; however, most of the money must be used for the golf course. This means that the remainder of the money for the building must be raised by the Golf Club.

The Golf Board has drawn up plans for a 40x80 building that will cost approximately $200,000. The Golf Board is seeking donations and pledges for the project. The new building will allow the course to make more money off rental activities.

Some plans for the course itself include replacing old sand with new, tiling the fairway of number two, where there is a standing water problem, installing a new bridge on the east side, making number 7 a pond again, ditching and rock placement, new benches, ball washers, and tee off markers along with landscaping.

Dues this year are $190 (Family), Individual ($120), and Student ($60). Rentals are Electric Cart ($65), and Gas Cart ($60). Green Fees are $10 and Club House Rental is $150.

Board members for this year include Lenny Campbell (President), Ernie Owens (Vice President), Berta Owens (Secretary-Treasurer), Guy Fletchall, Wanda Fletchall, Dave Brown, Megan Brown, Brandon Dunfee, Derek Verbick, Nate Lewis, Catherine Runde, and Tiffany Owens.

The golf season for this year will start with a Men’s Night at 6 pm on May 3rd, followed by a Women’s Night at 5:30 pm on May 15th. A Club Tournament will be held on the 27th; it will be two person best show at 1 pm, with meat provided. The McCrary Benefit will be June 10th this year. A Lodge Benefit will be held on the 17th at 8 am and 1 pm.

Grant City Golf Club Seeking Donations for Renovation

The Grant City Golf Club is seeking donations for its upcoming renovation project for the course. They are seeking to raise $10,000 in private donations through the GoFundMe page. The Golf Club is in the process of getting a DNR grant for a new building that can be used for community events as well as other additions to the course. Proceeds will be used to cover expenses that the grant does not cover. To donate online, visit here.

The Golf Club currently has 60 paid members. It used to be around 120 at one time; however, it has been coming back up. They currently rent the clubhouse for class reunions and family dinners. The building is deteriorating and rentals are dropping.

The DNR, with whom the Golf Club is applying for a grant, wants part of the money to be spent on irrigation and other such activities around the course, so they will not fund a big new building. They will help with furnishings for the clubhouse and community room.

2nd Annual Donnie McCrary Golf Classic

On June 14th Grant City Golf Course hosted the ‘2nd Annual Donnie McCrary, Jr. Golf Classic’ Tournament. The Tournament is held every year in memory of Donnie McCrary. There were over 30 teams participated. All winners donated their winnings back to the family.
The money acquired at the event is used for a scholarship that is handed out to Senior of the Jefferson School. They must write an essay on how cancer has affected their lives. This is the first year the scholarship was awarded and they look forward to continuing this tradition in the future.
In October of 2005, Donnie volunteered with the American Red Cross to help with the devastation Hurricane Katrina had caused in Louisiana (and while there, he witnessed Hurricane Wilma). A couple days prior to coming home, he had what appeared to be a fever blister on his lip, and the Red Cross medics looked at it and just told him to see his family doctor upon returning home. The doctors thought it was a cancerous tumor right away, and it was confirmed only days later.
He underwent immediate chemotherapy, and by January 2006, he had to have a feeding tube put in his stomach as he could no longer take any food or drink by mouth. The tumor would disappear with chemo for a week or two, but then would return with a vengeance and spread. In April of 2006, Donnie underwent an 18 hour surgery at KU Med that quite literally removed the lower-third of his face, which was somewhat rebuilt using titanium and skin grafts.
All the while this was happening to him, he maintained determination and strength. As if nothing had changed, he remained the rock for his family and friends. It was only in the week of his passing that he started really needing others to lean on. He passed away on June 9, 2007, at the age of 39. He left behind two young daughters, ages 7 and 13, to which he contributed his desire to fight the inevitable.
