In its inaugural issue of May 5th, 1881, the Blythedale Clipper gave the following listing of Blythedale businesses:
Geo. Norris, dry goods and general merchandise.
Grinstead & Parton, hardware, stoves, ag implements, grain dealer.
Young Brothers had a two story building with a lumberyard, hardware, and groceries.
Cadle & VanDerveer, lumber, grain, and coal.
Kirby & Young, dealers in drugs, patent medicines, paints, oils.
Three grocery stores – Chambers & Bishop, T.J. Hulen, James Clark.
W.C. Cunning, billiard hall and barber shop.
D.B. Vorhees, proprietor, Elwood House.
A. Sanders, proprietor, Sanders House.
D.E. Kirby, M.D., physician and surgeon.
W.J. Nevill, postmaster, justice of the peace, land agent.
W.J. Wightman, job printer, publisher of the Blythedale Clipper.
Allen & Hicks, livery stable. They ran a coach line to Eagleville and back.
Graham & Davis, blacksmiths.
W.C. Harvey, James Judkins, and W.W. Witt were resident carpenters. There were several other carpenters from out of town who did business there.
