Worth County sent off its seniors in style Friday with a 62-8 halftime win over King City as Kolten Smith blocked a punt, Landon Wilmes ran back a kickoff, and the Tigers did not let the Wildkats back in the game after they had scored on them. It was their fourth straight game of getting 60 points or more in a win. Recognized at their last regular season home game were football players Grant McIntyre, Landon Moser, Tyler New, Elias Alarcon, Kolten Smith, and band members Ethan Frese and Mitzie Gillespie.
The Tigers started with the ball on their own 30 and on the
very first play, Tyler New burst through the middle to score with 11:45 left in
the first quarter to make it 6-0. King City made no secret of what they wanted
to do as they tried to establish the passing games. But the game was played
under a steady drizzle and strong wind, which wreaked havoc on both teams
passing games all night. Three incompletions later, King City was forced to
punt and Kolten Smith shot through and blocked it, giving the Tigers a short
field to work with on the Wildkat 23. Once again, it only took one play to
score as Lucas Frisch took it to the house, Landon Wilmes added the extra
points, and Worth County was up 14-0 just over one minute into the game.
King City tried to get quarterback Darwin Bowden going on
the ground, but after Tyler New tackled him three yards short, they were forced
to punt and the Tigers started on their own 26. Landon Wilmes picked up seven
and then Tyler New broke tackle after tackle and sprung loose for a 47 yard
score with 8:22 left in the first.
The Wildkats had some trickery on their special teams,
generally getting some good runbacks on their reverse and fake reverse looks.
Ryder Sample got a good runback to the 35, but then a handoff fooled nobody as
Elias Alarcon, Lucas Frisch, and Bo Collins swarmed Graham Medsker for a loss
of five back to the 30. That set up another three and out and Tyler New ran
back the punt to the Wildkat 38. Landon Wilmes got a block from Elias Alarcon
to the 15. On third and three from the 8, Graham Medsker shot through on a
blitz untouched, but missed the tackle on Tyler New, who scampered into the end
zone with 4:41 left. Landon Wilmes got a block from Ethan Lininger and got
loose on a sweep to add the extra points to make it 28-0.
King City finally found a play that worked against Worth
County, where they would fake the jet sweep, but then Bowden would take off
down the middle of the field. He took off for 30 yards to the Tiger 28, but on
the next play, a mixup on the handoff resulted in a fumble and Lucas Frisch
pounced on it at the 36. But despite the turnover, King City was starting to
find their footing. They were seeking to follow the script of the Pattonsburg
game where they got punched in the mouth, fell behind 40-14, only to rally and
make adjustments and come back to win 74-68 in the closing seconds. They forced
a turnover on downs at the Tiger 32, but then Bo Collins got a sack, a fumbled
handoff drove them back to their own 38, and a quarterback hurry by Kolten
Smith set up fourth and 20. They elected to go for it, but Landon Wilmes picked
it off and ran it back to the Wildkat 35. Tyler New scrambled to the 29, and
then faked the jet sweep to Wilmes and took it to the house with 25 seconds
left in the first quarter. Landon Wilmes got a block from Lucas Frisch and took
it to the house to make it 36-0.
The Wildkats started off on their own 25, and three running
plays netted seven yards. On fourth and three at the 32, they were looking to
go for it, but a false start moved them back to the 27 and they punted. Kolten
Smith got a hand on it, but it rolled to the 20. It didn’t matter as Landon
Wilmes slipped a tackle and got loose and took it to the house with 10:34 left
in the second quarter.
Ryder Sample faked the reverse this time and took it back to
the 35. This time, the field position paid off as a pass interference penalty
and then a long pass to Sample put it on the one. Worth County made a stand and
nearly kept them out of the end zone, forcing fourth and goal. But then they
overcommitted on the run and left Sample all alone to put King City on the
board with 6:29 left. He caught the extra point pass to make it 42-8.
But just as it looked like King City would make a game of it
like they did in the Pattonsburg game, Landon Wilmes slammed the door on their
comeback hopes, running back the ensuing kick for a score to make it 48-8.
Wilmes got a sack on King City’s next series to put them behind the sticks, and
they were faced with a fourth and ten from the 25. A shanked punt put the ball
at the 37, and Tyler New’s 12 yard scamper put it on the King City 31. They
were forced into a third and nine and then Tyler New came under a heavy rush
and he scrambled to the right. But Grant McIntyre came free and Tyler New,
after misfiring in the drizzle all night, finally got him the ball and he took
it to the house with 2:35 left to put Worth County over the 45 point limit.
Tyler New threw a pass to Bo Collins, King City tipped it, but Bo still somehow
came up with it in the end zone to make it 58-8.
Ryder Sample picked up five to the 32 after King City
started on their own 27. With time running out in the first half, King City
aired it out deep, but nobody was home except for the referee, who made a nice
one-handed grab of the ball. Bowden tried to use his legs to keep the drive
going, but Lucas Frisch stopped him for no gain and King City elected to pin
Worth County deep at their own 8. But the field position didn’t matter as Tyler
New got a block from Ethan Lininger to the 25. Lucas Frisch then took a dive
and outran everyone to the house with 1:05 left to make it 62-8. Brayden
Stevens intercepted a long pass with 40 seconds left to allow Worth County to
kill the clock.
