Area Courthouse, Police, and Crime Reports for October 4th, 2023

 On September 24th, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson filed charges against Steven Woods (45) of Kansas City alleging Murder (1st Degree, Felony), two counts Armed Criminal Action (Felony), Assault (Felony), and Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Felony). Bond was set at $1 million, cash only. Multiple news outlets and Facebook pages reported that the defendant, an elementary school special education teacher at Smithville, was charged with shooting his 18 year old stepson dead and his wife multiple times following an altercation at their home. 

On September 25th, the Maryville Forum reported that Donald Piveral III pleaded guilty to Promoting Child Pornography and was sentenced to five years in prison. He will get credit for time served. Seven other charges were dropped.

On September 25th, the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department reported that they received a call from a Savannah home regarding a domestic disturbance. When deputies arrived, they found a man and a woman dead from an apparent murder/suicide. They were subsequently identified as Krystle Wolfenbarger (31) and Sean Blakeslee (46).

On September 26th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Kevin Tuttle (34) of Creston in Harrison County on a Worth County Warrant for Failure to Appear (No Insurance) and a Nodaway County Warrant for Failure to Appear (No Insurance). 

On September 26th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Joshua Fletcher (28) of McFall alleging No Valid License (4th Offense, Felony), Failure to Register, and No Plates.

On September 27th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Leander Gingerich (34) of Bethany alleging Sexual Misconduct (Child Under 15). Bond was set at $250,000, cash only.

On September 28th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Mark Wilson (54) of Ridgeway alleging Violation of a Protection Order. Bond was set at $2,500, cash only.

On September 28th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Christopher Mace (33) of Maryville alleging Domestic Assault (Felony). Bond was set at $750, cash only.

On September 28th, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against William Gable (65) of Bellevue (NE) alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident) and DWI. 

On September 28th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Justin Fitzmier (32) of Mound City alleging No Valid License (Felony). 

On September 28th, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against Leeanna Overstreet (20) of St. Joseph alleging DWI and Speeding (76 mph).

On September 29th, the US Attorney’s Office out of Kansas City reported that Marvin McWhorter III (41) of Ottawa (KS) pleaded guilty to robbing the Citizens Bank & Trust of Mound City, stealing $4,445 in cash. The defendant was apprehended after his getaway car broke down and he called a tow truck. The truck in question broke down at Forest City, but a local citizen, who recognized the truck, contacted law enforcement. Dispatch contacted the tow truck driver and directed him to pull over and wait for law enforcement. The defendant allegedly attempted to take control of the tow truck, but the tow truck operator and a passerby were able to subdue the defendant until law enforcement arrived. McWhorter faces a sentence of up to 20 years without parole.

On September 30th, a joint release from the Kansas City and St. Louis FBI alleges that two Phelps County (MO) Jail inmates escaped the night before by compromising the structural integrity of the cell and exiting the building. They were identified as Jonathan O’Dell and Steven Scott. Subsequently, Scott turned himself in. O’Dell faces federal charges alleging he planned to travel to Texas to shoot at immigrants crossing the border with Mexico along with any officers or employees of the US Border Patrol who attempted to stop him. Subsequently, he was captured in Ray County (MO) on October 1st. 

On September 30th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that at around 4:10 pm, a vehicle driven by Michelle Hamilton of Omaha (NE) was waiting to turn from East South Street in Mount Ayr into the Dollar General with her turn signals flashing when she was struck in the rear by Rachel Barnes (47) of Mount Ayr. Barnes was taken to Ringgold County Hospital for her injuries.

On September 30th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2005 GMC pickup driven by Ronald Ward (74) of Gilman City was northbound on Fisher Street in Gilman City at 7:45 pm, crossed the center line, and struck a parked car. A passenger, Christine Ward (73) of Gilman City, received minor injuries. Ronald Ward was not injured.

On September 30th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Savage Paden (48) of St. Joseph alleging Resisting Arrest (Felony), Driving While Revoked, and Speeding (120 mph). Bond was set at $5,000, with the defendant released on his own recognizance.

On October 2nd, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Earl Groom (51) of Bethany alleging Tampering with Motor Vehicle. Bond was set at $1,000, cash only.

On October 2nd, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Misty Lintz (41) of Bethany alleging DWI (Person less than 17 in vehicle). 

Charges listed are merely allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
