Mylee Wilmes Swipes 7; Bluejay Girls Use Strong Second Half to Beat Stanberry

Mylee Wilmes swiped seven for Northeast Nodaway's junior high girls, who used a strong second half and balanced scoring to pull away from Stanberry for a 27-17 win Tuesday. A swarming Bluejay defense was able to pressure the ball all night along as Brianna Meyer added 16 tips and 6 steals, and Gracie Kohlleppel added 6 steals.

Northeast Nodaway set the tone early as Skyler Florea scored off an inside shot, hit three out of four from the line, and scored off a Meyer steal to make it 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. Brianna Meyer added a drive off a Skyler Florea pass to make it 9-0.

But Stanberry started hanging around thanks to the play of Eva Cameron, who didn't shut off Florea completely, but held her down. They made an adjustment to where they were sagging off in the paint every time she touched the ball. As Stanberry was chipping away, Skyler fell and hurt her shoulder and had to come out at the 3:46 mark. She came back in at the 2:03 mark, but Lindsey Hailey bulldozed her way to the basket to cut it to 9-5 before Florea finally connected late to make it 11-5.

With Karla McQueen, one of the best defensive coaches in the area, guiding the gold shirts and Stanberry swarming all over Florea, someone had to step up; finally, Brianna Meyer jumped a pass and finished to start the second half to make it 13-5. Stanberry hung around for the majority of the third quarter, but then Hayley Yost went beast mode on the boards, getting consecutive putbacks to finish the third quarter and put Northeast up 19-9.

The difference between the first half and the second was that Northeast did a much better job crashing the offensive boards in the second half. Consequently, they began to pull away in the second half. Skyler Florea found Gracie Kohlleppel in transition to start the second half, Hayley Yost banked home two free throws after grabbing yet another offensive board, Mylee Wilmes, the littlest player on the floor, sneaked in and grabbed a putback, and Florea added two free throws to make it 27-9 before the reserves came in.

Skyler Florea had 11 for Northeast. Brianna Meyer and Hayley Yost had 6 each, and Mylee Wilmes and Gracie Kohlleppel had 2 each.

Blair Nelson and Mylee Wilmes had 1 block each.

Skyler Florea and Brianna Meyer had 2 assists each. Mylee Wilmes and Blair Nelson had 1 each.

Brianna Meyer had 16 tips. Mylee Wilmes had 7, Blair Nelson 5, Hayley Yost 4, Gracie Kohlleppel 2, and Skyler Florea 1.
