Obituary -- Marvin Dale Snead 1943-2023

Marvin Dale Snead, 80, of Albany, Missouri, passed away August 8, 2023 at his home. 

Marvin was born January 13, 1943, in Allendale, Missouri. He was the son of the late Dale and June (Claypool) Snead.

On April 17, 1970, he was united in marriage to Sue Petty. She survives of the home.

He is also survived by his daughters, Becky (Kyle) Koch, Albany; Jodi Thomas, Ridgeway, MO; son, Rick Snead, Albany; sister, Annavene Pine, Denver, CO; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Marvin was a logger and truck driver. He loved the outdoors, mowing, spending time with Sue and their grandchildren. He had a passion for tinkering with tractors and creating wooden cars and trucks to perfection.

Every Christmas season, the Albany community looked forward to Marvin and his neighbor Danny Booher decorating their yards. 

Graveside Service and Burial: 1:00 PM Saturday, August 12 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Gentry, MO. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday evening at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany. Friends may call anytime after 2:00 PM on Friday at the chapel. Obituary -- Teryl Bass 1952-2023

Teryl (Brown) Heflin Bass, 71, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023 at Independence Manor in Independence, Missouri.

Teryl was born on June 17, 1952 in Maryville, Missouri to Virgil and Veda (McGinnis) Brown. She was a graduate of North Nodaway High School and worked as a dental assistant for several years and retired from Ford Motor Company in Kansas City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin baby brothers, Lee and Dee and her husband, Omar Bass.

Survivors include her children, Tera Heflin and Troy Heflin; grandson, Talon Taylor; brother, Trevis Brown and three nephews, Devon, Derrick and Dustin.

Mrs. Bass has been cremated under the care of Price Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 2 pm at Price Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family suggests memorials to the Animal Shelter of your choice.

Obituary -- Dean James 1936-2023

Dean James, 86 of Hopkins, Missouri passed away on Monday, August 7, 2023 in Maryville, Missouri. 

Dean was born on October 15, 1936 in Hopkins, Missouri to the late Kenneth and Beula (Pettit) James. He was a lifelong farmer and member of the Hopkins community, and a member of the Hopkins Christian Church since 1963. He served in the Marine Corps (3/5/60) and was a proud Marine for his entire life. In his later years, he also operated an independent insurance agency in the community. He got his early education at a one room country school, never had the privilege of attending high school, but graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwest Missouri State University. Dean enjoyed traveling, sightseeing, playing cards, going to the movies, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include two sons, Scott (Selina) James, Hopkins, Missouri, Chris (Cindy) James, New Mexico; three sisters, Mary Williams, Carolyn Ehredt and Ruth Ellingson all of Maryville; three grandchildren, Jessica James, Paige (Jarad) Romine and Clayton James; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services 2 PM Monday, August 14th at Price Funeral Home. Burial Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, Missouri. The family suggests memorials to the Hopkins Christian Church.

Courthouse News for August 9th, 2023

On July 31st, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2018 Harley Davidson driven by Melissa McConnaughey (52) of Troy (KS) was southbound on I-35 one mile north of Bethany when she lost a wheel, left the east side, crossed the median, and the northbound lane of traffic. She then struck a ditch off the east side, ejecting the driver. McConnaughey received minor injuries and was taken to Harrison Community Hospital.

On August 1st, Special Prosecutor Myra Stout filed charges against Jonathan Strange (55) of Ridgeway in Harrison County alleging Non-Support (Felony).

On August 1st, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Joshua Hutton (32) of Cainsville alleging Property Damage (Felony), Driving While Revoked, and Careless & Imprudent Driving. Bond was set at $10,000, with defendant given leave to post 10% cash.  On July 25th, an affidavit from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department alleges that they had received multiple reports of careless and imprudent driving in Cainsville; one person was nearly run over. Further investigation revealed several circular ruts in the Cainsville ball field from someone spinning donuts in the field. Two witnesses allegedly identified the truck as belonging to the defendant.

On August 1st, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Silveria Nombre-Gomez (32) of Maryville alleging Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway, Failure to Signal, and No Valid License. On August 2nd, the defendant failed to appear and a warrant was issued. Bond was set at $350, cash only.

On August 2nd, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against Drew Sternberg (38) of Maryville alleging DWI and Speeding. 

On August 2nd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Joseph Paglia (37) of Aubrey (TX) alleging Burglary (Felony) and two counts Stealing (Felony). Bond was set at $10,000, cash or corporate surety.

On August 3rd, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against Korbey Youngs (22) of Maryville alleging Resisting Arrest. 

On August 3rd, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Jagger Moad (20) of Albany in Gentry County for two Harrison County Warrants for Failure to Appear (Speeding, No Valid License).

On August 3rd, a Taylor County Jury convicted Ellis Houk (69) of Kellerton of charges of Arson, Attempted Murder, Willful Injury, Burglary, and Criminal Mischief. On November 20th, 2022, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a house fire. A woman who lived there received serious injuries and was life flighted to a burn center; she survived the fire. The defendant allegedly attempted to flee, but was apprehended by the Hartley County (TX) Sheriff’s Department shortly afterwards and extradited to Bedford. Sentencing will be at a later date.

On August 3rd, the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department reported that they had received a donation of a doghouse from Sophia Riley, who had designed and built the doghouse with the idea of helping law enforcement. Her idea won a blue ribbon in a Community Projects Contest in the Page County (IA) Fair. It will be used for the new K-9 that the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of purchasing. 

On August 3rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Kenneth Walker (49) of Clearmont alleging DWI and Careless & Imprudent Driving. 

On August 3rd, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against Keelan Osentowski (22) of York (NE) alleging DWI and Speeding (93 mph). 

On August 3rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Shaun Frame (43) of Burlington Junction alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony) and Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway. Bond was set at $10,000, cash or corporate surety.

On August 4th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Tina Dieter filed charges against Jiahong Pan (33) of San Lorenzo (CA) alleging Stealing (Felony) and Attempted Theft (Felony). Bond was set at $200,000, cash only. According to the probable cause affidavit from the Maryville Department of Public Safety, the defendant, acting in concert with two other individuals, convinced a local victim to invest $200,000 in cryptocurrency; unbeknownst to the victim, the platform was controlled by the defendant and her associates. The victim was not allowed to transfer their money to their bank account unless they paid a $100,000+ “capital gains tax.” The defendant was arrested when she was making a trip from California to Maryville to collect the “tax.”

Recently, the weather changed from drought to rainy conditions in a hurry. On August 4th, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office reported that there was water over the roadways in several parts of southern Harrison County. 

On August 5th, Harrison County Prosecutor Alex Van Zandt filed charges against Robert Munoz (64) of Bethany alleging Burglary (Felony), Harassment (Felony), Armed Criminal Action (Felony), and Trespassing. Bond was set at $100,000, cash only. 

On August 5th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Joel Beck (44) of Kellerton on a charge of DWI. Bond was set at $1,000, cash only. 

On August 6th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Dallas Earley (28) of Mount Ayr on a charge of Driving While Revoked. Bond was set at $2,000, cash only.

On August 7th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested John Shanks (52) of Stanberry in Harrison County on a Scotland County Warrant for Failure to Appear (Speeding). 

On August 7th, Nodaway County Assistant Prosecutor Amy Cloud filed charges against Timothy Hoepker (17) of Hopkins alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

Charges listed are merely allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Obituary -- Jerry Wiley 1942-2023

Jerry Wayne Wiley was welcomed into this world on September 7, 1942, in Worth County, Missouri, by his father, C. Wayne Wiley, and mother, Avesto Betty Ray Wiley, and was later joined by baby sister, Lois June Wiley, on May 1, 1945. Jerry lived a good Christian life.

At the age of eighty, he passed away at his home in Pensacola, Florida, on March 11, 2023, and was cremated so that his cremains could be returned to rest with his parents at the Grant City Cemetery in Grant City, Missouri.

Jerry graduated from Sheridan R-II School in 1961 and worked for Ford Motor Corporation in Detroit, Michigan and other automotive manufacturing places for many years. He later became an Over-the-Road truck driver and crossed the United States many times. When he was not working, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, and basketball. Jerry really just wanted everyone to have a good time.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Betty Wiley, and his sister, Lois Wiley Fletchall Rodrick, who passed in 2006, and friend, Ruth Kobbe Allen.

Left to remember him fondly are his niece, Darla Shelly Ladner, and countless friends: Dennis Warren of Pensacola, Florida, and many from Worth County, C. Ralph Kobbe, Larry Hibbs and Burl Huff, to name a few.

Jerry was inurned at the Wiley family plot in the Grant City Cemetery, on August 14, 2023.

Obituary -- Janice Wilson 1950-2023

Janice Louise Wilson passed away peacefully at home in Bedford Iowa on Sunday morning, August 6, 2023. She leaves a legacy of love and commitment to her family and her patients. Jan was born on the family farm on May 15, 1950 to Wilma and George Spencer of Bedford. She graduated from Bedford Community High School and matriculated at Northwest Missouri State University, majoring in English and concentrating in Music performance. She married Jim Wilson, the love of her life on April 26, 1970 and settled in Bedford where she taught English and Music at the Bedford Community High School.

She was an intuitive and versatile musician, playing classical, religious and popular pieces, and for many years accompanied the high school vocalists and instrumentalists locally and at state competitions. She founded and accompanied the vocal group, ”One Voice” in numerous performances over the years and was sought after to play for most local weddings and funerals.

She volunteered constantly; on the board of the Bedford Country Club, played for numerous community musicals in Southwest Iowa, and mentoring young women serving as a Girl Scout leader, and Grand Deputy for the International Order of Rainbow Girls. She was devoted to the United Christian Presbyterian Church and was active in leadership of its board. For most years of her adult life, you would find her playing the piano or organ at Sunday morning services. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Bedford Chapter 228, and served as Grand Organist in 2012, directing the music and playing at events throughout the state of Iowa. She was also a member of Chapter CU. P.E.O.

In mid career she returned to Northwest, obtaining a Masters in Clinical Psychology. She first counseled patients for the Shenandoah Medical Center and subsequently joined Midwest Mental Health in Shenandoah. She was very attached to her patients and cared for them throughout her illness and at the end of her struggle was more concerned for their welfare than her own.

She was predeceased by her parents George and Wilma Spencer, her son James Wilson and grandson Derek Jackson. She is survived by her husband Jim of 53 years, her children Jina (Dennis) Jackson, Jackie (Miles) Spainhower, Michelle Wilson, her brother Dennis (Mary Louise) Spencer, and six grandchildren, Devan, Danyelle, Evan, Emsley, Maizey (Wyatt) and Atticus.

Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in the United Christian Presbyterian Church. The family will be in attendance from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held in the church at 10:30 AM Thursday, August 10 with internment following at Fairview Cemetery.

Philanthropic Gifts in Jan’s name should be sent to Kindra Weston at Midwest Mental Health, 523 West Sheridan Ave, Shenandoah, Ia, 51601 and will be used for uninsured patientcare and designated educational scholarships.
