Obituary -- Margie Conard 1924-2022

Margie Marie (Fletchall) Conard was born July 5, 1924 in Worth County, Missouri to Gordon and Mildred (Rowen) Fletchall. She was educated in country schools in Atchison and Worth County. 

Margie was united in marriage to Donald Lee Conard on March 4, 1946 by Rev. L.B. Day in Maryville, Missouri. To this union one son, Donald Gordon Conard was born on December 30, 1946. 

They settled in Worth County where she worked as a waitress at the sale barn. Later Donald went to work for the telephone company and they lived in Kansas and Oklahoma before settling in Texas for many years. While in Texas she was a homemaker and would babysit children.  Margie later returned to Grant City where she currently resided. Margie attended the Assembly of God Church for several years when she was able to. 

She passed away at Orilla’s Way on November 8, 2022 at the age of 98 years old. 

Preceding Margie was her parents; husband Donald Lee Conard; son Donald Gordon Conard; sisters Cleta Ahrens and Janis Newcomer; brothers Kenneth, Gerald, Allen and Jerry Fletchall. 

Left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren Robert (Brenda) Conard of Lee Summit and Autumn Conard of Kansas City; three great-grandchildren Jacob, Ethan and Nora Conard; sister Gloria Heintz of St. Joseph; extended family and friends. 

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, MO. Burial will be in the Grant City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to service time. 

Louis Prichard Honored by School at Worth County Veterans Day Program

Louis Prichard, one of Worth County’s last living World War II veterans, was awarded an honorary diploma by the school at the annual Veterans Day celebration Friday. Mr. Prichard dropped out of school in 1943 to enlist in the military, served from 1943 to 1946, and never got the opportunity to finish school. He served on the USS Sculpture, which delivered ammunition to soldiers who were fighting on the various islands of the Pacific. He was a 1st Class Boatswain.

Doris Monday, at 103 years young, is one of Worth County’s oldest residents; she was in attendance Friday. She is the widow of the late Denzil Monday, who fought in World War II. She waited four years for him to return, and they got married. She had six brothers who served in the military as well; two served in World War II, two served in Korea, and two were peacetime veterans. She also had two nephews and a son who served in Vietnam.

The Worth County Drumline Corps opened the celebration with a march into the gym, and the Kindergarten class led the crowd of around 800 in the Pledge. Elementary Principal Chuck Borey welcomed everyone, saying, “Our debt can never be repaid. They are the true heroes of our country. The lower elementary students sang, “The Grand Old Flag.”

Bob Hull, Commander of Worth County VFW Post 3123, recognized members of the local Honor Guard, which performs local military honors for deceased veterans. “They ask for nothing, but they deserve a small token of our appreciation,” he said. Recognized were Mark Abplanalp, Will Brown, Bill Calhoon, Sean Cameron, Lee Mincy, Frank McElvain, David Maudlin, and Bill Tracy.

Mr. Hull also gave Riley Ridge an award for outstanding service, Superintendent Chris Healy a certificate for the school’s efforts to support veterans, and Julia Wideman for organizing the program annually and for getting the State VFW Teacher of the Year Award last year. 

The Upper Elementary sung the popular Lee Greenwood tune, “Proud to be an American.”

Jo Lynn Hawk was given the Patriot’s Pen award this year for her essay, “My Pledge to Veterans.” Hawk wrote about how it was easy during peacetime to forget what war was like. She pledged to remember the veterans and to never take them for granted. “You know that war is not fun and games,” she wrote.

High School Principal Jon Adwell recognized Mrs. Monday as well as all the branches of the Armed Forces along with all the survivors of the various conflicts from World War II to the Global War on Terror. The High School Band played a tribute to all the different branches of the Armed Forces.

Paige Sherer was given the Voice of Democracy by the Worth County VFW for her essay, “Why are Veterans Important?” She wrote that veterans were like the sturdy materials that kept a house together. “Our veterans bear the weight of the country and are constantly supporting the rest of our citizens,” she wrote. “They made sure we were safe. They sacrificed everything so that we never have to fear threatened.” She concluded, “Without them, it’s like having no beams and columns to hold our house up.”

A group of students reenacted the Johnny Cash video, “Ragged Old Flag,” about a flag in a courtyard that had been in all of the conflicts the US had fought in and had survived. Tucker Owens performed “Born Into Nothing,” a song that he wrote about someone who was born into nothing who decided to enlist in the military. 

The middle school and high school students formed a tunnel for all the veterans in attendance to go through at the end of the program. Refreshments were served afterwards.

Courthouse News for November 9th, 2022

On October 29th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Misty Erickson on charges of Theft. Bond was set at $2,000, cash or corporate surety.

On October 31st, the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department reported conducting a compliance check with 71 registered sex offenders in Nodaway County. Most were in compliance with state Halloween laws, but the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department says that three were not. Of those, two were arrested without incident and given summonses. A third was charged with Resisting Arrest, Possession of Controlled Substance, and Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Restrictions. In addition, the Sheriff’s Department got calls requesting a well being check on Highway EE, cases of harassment, cattle out, and an assault near Hopkins, a domestic situation near Maryville, and property damage near Hopkins.

On October 31st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Dillon Strum (29) of Maryville alleging Property Damage (Felony) and Domestic Assault. Bond was set at $10,000, with the defendant released on his own recognizance.

On October 31st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Michelle Grady (54) of Clearfield alleging Burglary (Felony), Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Felony), and Interference with Custody (Removal from State, Felony). Bond was denied.

On October 31st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Monty Parkhurst (58) of St. Joseph alleging Burglary (Accessory, Felony), and Interference with Custody (Accessory, Felony). Bond was denied.

On November 1st, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Mark McPherson (53) of Maryville alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Resisting Arrest, and Failure to Comply with Halloween Restrictions for Sex Offenders. Bond was set at $30,000, cash or corporate surety.

On November 2nd, Northwest Mo Info reported that the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department received a call regarding a suspicious person in the area of the North Harrison School. The subject then entered the back of the school. The subject reported that people were chasing him and that he was afraid for his life. The school was placed on lockdown and the subject taken into custody. As of Friday afternoon, no charges had been filed.

On November 2nd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Jason Parker on charges of Felon in Possession of Firearm (Felony), Controlled Substance Violation (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Short Barreled Rifle (Felony), and Theft (Felony). Bond was set at $45,000, cash or corporate surety.

On November 2nd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Johnnie Lovell on charges of Felon in Possession of Firearm (Felony), Controlled Substance Violation (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Short Barreled Shotgun (Felony), and Theft (Felony). Bond was set at $45,000, cash or corporate surety.

On November 3rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Clarissa Ferguson (35) of Maryville alleging Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony) and Resisting Arrest (Felony). 

On November 3rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Keith Holderfield (51) of Maryville alleging Peace Disturbance.

On November 3rd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that they executed a search warrant in a home in Redding. Narcotics and drug paraphernalia were seized. The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Joshua Levy on charges of Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of Methamphetamine, Tax Stamp Violation, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interference with Official Acts. Bond was set at $31,600.

On November 4th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Anthony Boydston (46) of St. Joseph alleging Domestic Assault.

On November 4th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Jerry Trammell (69) of Ridgeway alleging two counts Statutory Sodomy (Felony) and two counts Child Molestation. Bond was set at $250,000, cash only.

On November 4th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2011 GMC Terrain driven by Brooke MaGee (28) of Ridgeway was westbound on 136 one mile southwest of Bethany when it traveled off the north side and struck an embankment. MaGee received minor injuries and was taken to Harrison County Community Hospital.

On November 4th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reported that during a Taylor County search warrant on the western edge of Ringgold County, multiple items were recovered and controlled substances and paraphernalia seized. Subsequently, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested Margaret Williams (34) of Clearfield on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Theft (Felony), and a Controlled Substance Violation (Felony). Bond was set at $40,000, cash or corporate surety.

On November 4th, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department provided additional information about the search. There were 25 firearms recovered as well as Marijuana, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and stolen property. The Creston Police Department, Afton Police Department, and Union County Sheriff’s Office also participated. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation is ongoing and more warrants were expected to be issued and served.

On November 4th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against David Morriss (36) of Guilford alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On November 4th, Northwest Mo Info reported that a Bethany man, Levi Wedgeworth (32), was arrested in Chillicothe after a pickup was located that had been reported stolen from First Call Storm Removal of Bethany. He is also being charged in Harrison County with two counts of Tampering with Motor Vehicle (Felony).

On November 5th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2005 Toyota Scion driven by Constance Terry (23) of Burlington Junction was northbound on 71 at Wilcox at around 12:30 am when she went off the east side of the roadway and struck an embankment and overturned. Constance and a passenger, Jacob Wooten (28) of Burlington Junction, were injured and taken to Mosaic in Maryville.

On November 7th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 1975 Chevy Dump Truck driven by Gary Stevens (79) of New Hampton was northbound on Route EE one mile north of New Hampton and a 2022 Ford F-350 driven by Briacin Gebhards (22) of Tarkio was southbound. The dump truck ran off the west side, returned, crossed the center line, and struck the driver’s side of the towed unit of the Ford. The dump truck ran off the east side, overturned, caught fire, and became fully engulfed. The towed unit of the Ford separated from the pickup, ran off the east side, and overturned. Stevens received minor injuries and was taken to Harrison County Community Hospital. Gebhards was not injured.

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Bo Has 28 Points, 17 Boards in Tiger Victory

Bo Collins had 28 points and Worth County put together another dominant performance with a 78-9 win over Pattonsburg, a performance that led one of the Panther partisans to say that was one of the most dominant teams they had ever seen. Collins was one of four Tigers in double figures as Caleb New had 14, Hayden Sanders 13, and Cole Ruby 10. Ethan Lininger and Dylan Smith had 5 and Brock Healy had 3 to round out the scoring for the Tigers, who remained undefeated on the season.

The Tigers scored the first 47 points of the game on their way to the victory. Pattonsburg, with only one eighth grader on the team with the rest of their squad being sixth and seventh graders, had some good guard play from Brandon Heath, who had a crazy pass from the point to the opposite side block to Drake Sperry for a layup; Heath showed a lot of the same qualities that make Tate McCollum (St. Gregory’s) a dangerous player, but the Panthers didn’t have anybody who could keep Bo Collins or Ethan Lininger off the boards.

Ten different Tigers got boards in the win. Bo Collins had 17, Ethan Lininger 11, Cole Ruby and Caleb New 5 each, Brock Healy 2, and Hayden Sanders, Dylan Smith, Jordan Dannar, Ryder Smyser, and Wesley Brown 1 each.

Ethan Lininger had 5 blocks. Bo Collins had 4, and Hayden Sanders 3.

Hayden Sanders had 7 assists. Caleb New had 5, Ethan Lininger 4, Cole Ruby 3, Bo Collins and Ryder Smyser 2, and Dylan Smith 1.

Cole Ruby had 5 tips. Bo Collins and Hayden Sanders had 3 each, Dylan Smith 2, and Ethan Lininger, Brock Healy, and Wes Brown 1 each.

Tiger Girls Win Second Straight, Drop Panthers

Worth County’s junior high girls won their second straight game Tuesday night, turning back several Pattonsburg charges and getting the 27-23 win. The Panthers, with coaching institution Bill Pottorff at the helm, started off strong playing his brand of swarming, pressing basketball. Addi Iddings, younger sister of Pattonsburg’s quarterback and defensive stopper, scored five early points; much like her brother on the gridiron, she served as a floor general for the Panthers, making everyone else around her better. Carly Pittsenbarger added a steal as the Panthers led it at one point 7-4. But then Worth County found their footing under them and erased the lead, getting a baseline shot from Megan Tracy and a putback from Kristen Tracy to grab the lead 8-7 after the first quarter. It didn’t help the Panthers that their best post player, Taylen Fore, sat much of the game with foul trouble.

The Tiger lead grew to five at 12-7 as Kristen Tracy scored from the right wing and added an inside shot. But then Kambree Briner got her third foul and sat, opening the barn door for Pattonsburg to come back. Pittsenbarger cut it to 12-9 at the half and then Jayden Goble cut it to 12-11 to start the third. 

Kristen Tracy got a putback after a Tiger steal and then Keira Hardy got a steal and fed Audrey Runde to make it 16-11. But then Runde picked up her third foul and Pattonsburg came back again as Goble cut it to 16-13 and then Pittsenbarger tied it with a three point play.

But then Tracy got a third chance putback and Iddings picked up her fourth foul and sat. Briner and Runde came back for Worth County and stayed away from their fourth foul. Briner hit a free throw, Megan Tracy hit from the left wing after a pass from Audrey Runde, and Kambree Briner added a steal with 5 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 23-16.

Pattonsburg rushed their starters back in to start the fourth quarter and they made a run at the Tigers as Iddings knocked one down from the right wing and Goble connected to make it 23-20. But then Megan Tracy scored in traffic and Kristen Tracy added a putback for the dagger before Cheyenne Miller hit a 3-pointer for Pattonsburg at the buzzer.

Kristen Tracy had 16 points. Megan Tracy had 6, Kambree Briner 3, and Audrey Runde 2.

Keira Hardy and Kristen Tracy had 1 block each.

Platte Valley Blitzes Knights to Advance to Worth County Showdown

Platte Valley used some big plays to knock South Holt out of the playoffs and set up Friday's showdown with Worth County in Barnard. The Knights tried to make things interesting in the second half, but a couple of breaks kept the game firmly in Platte Valley's favor as they got the 50-20 win. The game was moved to Saturday afternoon due to the rains the night before. 

Carter Luke struck for Platte Valley right off the bat as he took it to the house on their first play from scrimmage after they set up shop at their own 27. Justin Miller caught the extra point pass from Aydan Blackford with 11:43 left in the first quarter to make it 8-0.

Kendall Noland had been the heart and soul of South Holt's depleted roster, which had only 13 players dressed out Saturday. After the Knights were buried at the 15 by Trevor Weir's kick, they were faced with third and eight at their own 17. Weir's shoestring tackle kept him from getting a first down and the Knights were forced to punt. The kick was shanked, and Platte Valley had a short field to work with at the Knights 36. Carter Luke ripped off a 12 yard gain to the 24 after getting a block from Brandon McQueen and then Jaxon McCrary took it the rest of the way with 9:39 left to make it 14-0.

South Holt tried to go on the ground, but Jaxon McCrary and Wyatt Miller met Jayce Jackson and dropped him for one yard. The Knights finally started moving the ball as Cade Kurtz caught a short pass and a draw from Noland got the first down to the 32. Cole Medsker's catch and run made it to the 40, and a pitch to Jackson made it to the 36. They were temporarily set back by an illegal formation, but a pass to Jackson made it to the Platte Valley 29. Noland's draw made it to the 21, and on third and 9 at the 20, the Knights rescued it with a 13 yard pass to Medsker to the 7. But then Noland was met at the 6 by Carter Luke, and Noland was under a heavy rush and could not complete any of his three pass attempts and the Knights gave it back on downs. It only took Platte Valley one play to take advantage as Carter Luke took a sweep down the left sideline, the same play that he scored on earlier, for 74 yards to the house. Justin Miller took a big hit, but hung on to Blackford's pass to make it 22-0 with 4:13 left in the first.

Jayce Jackson picked up 11 yards and a first down to the 26, but on the next play, the Knights caught a short pass, only to fumble it away at the 23. There were a lot of big hits that afternoon, resulting in a lot of fumbles on both sides. Two plays later, Jaxon McCrary seemingly broke one for a long gain, only to take a solid shot and fumbled it right back at the 2. 

Unlike Rock Port, which folded against Worth County the night before, South Holt kept right on fighting the whole game despite getting punched in the mouth early on. Noland scrambled for a first down to the 14. A sack from Wyatt Miller dropped South Holt back to the 11, but Jayce Jackson caught a short pass to the 22 and an offsides penalty gave them a first down at the 27. A short pass to Jackson put it on the 34. A blitz dropped Medsker dropped them back to the 31, but another pass to Jackson got a first down to the 39. On the next play, Trevor Weir came through unblocked and flushed Noland out of the pocket, but he somehow got away and uncorked a long pass to Cade Kurtz to the Platte Valley 10. But once again, South Holt could not get in as Brandon McQueen picked off the next pass on the 8. 

South Holt tightened up on defense, but Platte Valley still moved the ball to the 19 after Aydan Blackford scrambled for a first down. A bad snap pinned Platte Valley back to the 9, where they faced third and 20. On the pass, both Carter Luke and his defender tangled up with the official and the pass fell incomplete. But a costly penalty occurred as the Knights were flagged for Roughing the Passer and the drive stayed alive and Platte Valley had a first down at the 34. On the next play, Carter Luke got a block from Justin Miller and got free all the way down to the Knight 17. Two carries by Jaxon McCrary put it on the 1, and Aydan Blackford ran it in to make it 28-0 with 4:17 left in the half.

Platte Valley had a chance to add on to their lead after Trevor Weir batted down a pass on fourth and eight at the Knight 30, but on fourth and one at the 21, Platte Valley fumbled it right back to the Knights at the 27 with 51 seconds left in the half. South Holt got as far as the 29, but a sack by Leland Otto and Trevor Weir and a grounding penalty killed the drive and Platte Valley went into the half up 28-0.

Once again, Trevor Weir boomed a kickoff into the end zone and the Knights were buried on their own 15. The Knights overcame a sack by Justin Miller as Jayce Jackson caught a 10 yard pass to the 30 for a first down. But on fourth and three at the 37, Medsker met Justin Miller and Platte Valley took over on downs at the 38. This time, they took advantage of the short field as Carter Luke ripped off 15 yards to the 23 and Leland Otto picked up 9 more to the 14. Jaxon McCrary picked up two for a first down to the 12, and then Brandon McQueen was all alone for a pass from Aydan Blackford with 6:11 left. Platte Valley lined up in their swinging gate formation and Trevor Weir caught the pass on the center eligible play to make it 36-0.

Previously, South Holt had run down the clock to keep the Platte Valley offense off the field. But this time, they picked up the pace and went no huddle after Weir boomed another kickoff into the end zone. The move seemed to pay off as Medsker caught a short pass over the middle to the 25 for a first down and Cade Kurtz caught a 16 yarder despite maximum pressure on Noland from Justin Miller. Medsker's catch and run netted 11 to the 23, and the line gave Noland an eternity to throw and he found Medsker again at the 8. Noland scrambled to the 3, and then Tylynn Prussman caught one in the back of the end zone with 9.7 seconds left in the third to make it 36-6. It didn't help that Wyatt Miller was hurt in the third quarter and sat out, which hurt Platte Valley's pass rush.

Carter Luke got a block from Trevor Weir and ripped off 18 yards after Platte Valley set up on their own 21, and the Knights marched right back down the field again. The Knights, who were loading the box to try and stop the run, nearly pulled it off and Platte Valley was faced with fourth and nine at the 40. But then Aydan Blackford got a block from Brandon McQueen and scrambled down the right side for a touchdown with 9:50 left in the fourth for a badly needed insurance score to make it 42-6.

Mason Richardson dropped one of the Knight return men at the 13, but it didn't matter as Kendall Noland completed four straight passes, bringing the Knights to the Platte Valley 15. On third and 11 at the 16, Medsker caught a pass over the middle and his catch and run took it to the house with 6:49 left to make it 42-12. 

There was a heartstopping moment on the ensuing onsides kick attempt as the black shirts seeming had it recovered, but it didn't travel the necessary 10 yards, and Platte Valley was awarded the ball at the South Holt 39. But on fourth and four at the 33, Aydan Blackford was dropped at the 36, and the Knights overcame a Leland Otto sack on fourth and six as Jayce Jackson's 12 yard pass to the 28 kept the drive alive. South Holt nearly fumbled the ball but it rolled out of bounds at the 19. Noland scrambled his way on two plays to the 13, but a dropped pass and a good tackle by Brandon McQueen on Jackson set up fourth and 10 at the 14. But on the next play, Noland had forever to throw and he found Cole Medsker in the end zone with 2:26 left. But as Prussman tried to set up a return down the right side of the field, he fumbled the ball and Carter Luke returned it to the South Holt 26. On the play, a blind side block was called during the return and enforced on South Holt despite the change of possession, putting the ball on the Knight 13. Platte Valley only needed two plays to put the dagger in South Holt's heart, getting a seven yard carry from Luke and a 6 yarder from Jaxon McCrary to the house with 2:01 left. Trevor Weir caught the two point pass to make it 50-20, and a sack by Leland Otto on fourth down gave the ball back to Platte Valley, and they were able to run out the clock.
