Ethan Linninger Has 18 Points, 7 Assists as JH Tiger Boys Hand Falcons 1st Loss

Worth County continued to put on a clinic Monday as they easily turned back a challenge from unbeaten St. Gregory's, beating the Falcons 52-12 Monday. The Tigers had won handily in all of their games so far, their closest challenge being a 57-21 win over King City. St. Gregory's came in with the two headed monster of ball handling wizard Tate McCollum (son of the Northwest men's coach) and Luke Allen a physical post player able to hang with Worth County's big men. 

The Falcons put Allen on Collins, and Allen did his job defensively, holding down Collins to 9 points. The problem was that they had nobody to put on Ethan Lininger. They tried to double team him every time he touched the ball in the low post, but he turned out to have guard-like court vision, passing the ball out of the double team and knowing when to attack the rim and when to skip the ball to the open man. He had 18 points for the Tigers and led the team with 7 assists. 

As for the other end, Worth County rotated Collins and Lininger on Allen, holding him to 3 points. They rotated Hayden Sanders and Cole Ruby on McCollum, holding him to 6. The rest of the squad could not pick up the slack, turning it into a long night for the Falcons.

Lininger picked apart the Falcons at will in the first quarter, scoring six of the first 12 points as Hayden Sanders was getting him the ball inside; he added an assist to Bo Collins on a high-low look and a skip to Caleb New for a 3-pointer. Joe Snyders broke the shutout for the Falcons with a shot from the right wing, but Bo Collins scored twice after Lininger got him the ball in transition and Caleb New added a putback to make it 18-2 after one.

Tate McCollum finally got on the board for St. Gregory's to start the second, but despite all of his probing off the dribble, he couldn't find any of the driving lanes he was used to. Meanwhile, Bo Collins got on the line and hit three free throws, Cole Ruby scored off a drive, Ethan Lininger scored off a couple of putbacks, and Hayden Sanders scored a 3-pointer off of one of Lininger's skip passes out of the post. Lininger added a third putback in the closing seconds of the first half to make it 32-6 at the break.

The third quarter was more of the same as Lininger started off with a third chance putback. Cole Ruby went coast to coast and Ethan Lininger went backdoor to make it 38-6. McCollum's free throws cut it to 38-8, but then Lininger hit a free throw, hit Caleb New backdoor, and then Hayden Sanders hit a free throw and Caleb New scored off a drive to make it 45-8 before McCollum cut it to 45-9 going into the fourth. 

Allen hit a free throw to start the fourth and Connolly Mayfield hit from the wing for the Falcons, but then Caleb New hit two free throws, Dylan Smith inbounded one to Brock Healy for a 3-pointer, and Brock stole the ensuing inbounds pass and got it to Jordan Dannar near the end.

Ethan Lininger had 18 points for the Tigers. Caleb New had 11, Bo Collins 9, Cole Ruby 5, Hayden Sanders 4, Brock Healy 3, and Jordan Dannar 2.

Kristen Tracy Scores 18 as JH Tiger Girls Break Out

Worth County's junior high girls had a breakout game against St. Gregory's, hanging 43 points on them Monday night as Kristen Tracy came alive in the 43-24 win. The previous three games for Worth County had been decided by a double overtime win over North Harrison, an overtime loss to King City, and a three point loss to Northeast Nodaway. Naturally, the question was how many overtimes Monday's game would take. But this time, it was one of those nights in which everything Worth County threw up was going in. They scored as many points in one night as they normally score in three or four games. Their defense has been keeping them in games, but the question was how to score. For at least one night, they finally figured it out.

Kristen Tracy stuffed the stat line for Monday's game, getting 18 points, 9 boards, 5 assists, 4 tips, and 7 steals. Kambree Briner attacked the rim as well as she had all year, adding 13 points, and the rest of the starters chipped in. Worth County did a much better job of sharing the ball on offense, getting 17 assists in the game. 

Tracy scored off an inbounds play right off the bat, Keira Hardy scored off a Kambree Briner steal, and then Megan Tracy drove and scored two free throws. Briner got loose against the Falcon press to make it 10-0. Jade Price's putback cut it to 10-2, but Kristen Tracy got loose inside and got a pass from Audrey Runde, and then cleaned up on a miss in transition to make it 14-2 after one.

Price scored six points in the second quarter as she tried to keep her team in the game, but Tracy knocked down a shot in the high post despite being heavily guarded to spark the Tigers. Keira Hardy drove and found Megan Tracy loose underneath, Tracy got loose inside after another Hardy drive, and then Keira finished one to make it 22-4. Channing Harbin's left wing shot cut it to 22-6, and the teams traded blows for the rest of the quarter before Kambree Briner's drive at the first half buzzer put the Tigers up 28-10. 

Audrey Runde got loose behind the Falcon defense, Kambree Briner scored off another drive, and Tracy got loose for six more in the third as the Tigers scored the first ten points of the period to take their biggest lead at 38-10. The Falcons wouldn't quit as they continued to swarm and press the Tigers the rest of the way. They need other players besides Price to step up and score to be effective, and they finally did in the fourth quarter as both Grace Steins and Kori Quinlin got going offensively for them and they cut it to 38-16. But Kambree Briner converted a three point play and Kristen Tracy got loose in transition to make it 43-18 at the 1:53 mark before Worth County subbed freely the rest of the way.

Worth County Turns Back Rock Port 52-0 in Halftime Win

Worth County turned back Rock Port 52-0 in a halftime game Friday as worries that the rain and the mud would slow down the Tigers did not materialize. They only had one fumble that night, while Rock Port had several fumbles as they had trouble navigating the wet conditions. The Tigers only needed one hour to complete the beatdown and get ready for Platte Valley, in a game which will be played Friday at 7 pm at Barnard. 

At first, it looked like Rock Port would present some problems to the Tigers; the Bluejays had posed problems early to Platte Valley before they pulled away in the second quarter to get the 54-16 win. Worth County was backed up fourth and eight at their own 33 and was seemingly forced to punt, but a costly Roughing the Kicker penalty on Rock Port gave the Tigers new life at the 32, and everything snowballed from there. On the next play, Braxton Hightshoe started left, cut right, and ran right through the Rock Port defenders with 10:21 left, and Levi Cassavaugh ran in the extra points to make it 8-0.

Worth County loaded the box to stop the run, as Rock Port has been building up a program around the power running game similar to North Andrew and Platte Valley under a new coach. They do a good job of carrying out their fakes, and it fooled everyone at first after Rock Port started at their own 15. Phillip Herron bounced outside to the Tiger 24, and then Aidan Burke fooled everyone with a keeper to the 15. Herron picked up a first down to the 11, and then Micah Makings picked up three more to the 8. But just as it looked like Rock Port might tie the game, Dylan McIntyre scooped the first of many Rock Port fumbles and scored from 70 yards out to make it 14-0 with 8:00 left in the first.

Aidan Burke got a decent return to the 35, but Jace Latham dropped Herron for a loss of one and Levi Cassavaugh dropped him after a one yard gain. Burke slipped and fell to force a fourth and 10, and Braxton Hightshoe ran down the right side, got a block, and took it to the house with 5:50 left. Levi Cassavaugh got a quick hitter to make it 22-0.

Burke met Jace Latham on the next play after Rock Port started at their own 30. A bad snap set up third and 13, but an 11 yard reverse to Makings set up fourth and two at the 38. But then Tanner Ridge pounced on a fumble and Worth County got the ball back at the Rock Port 37. Hightshoe dove 15 yards to the 22, and then Levi Cassavaugh got a block from Jace Latham and took it to the house with 3:21 left in the first quarter.

A squib kick paid off as Braxton Hightshoe dropped Makings at the 20. On Rock Ports first play from scrimmage, Landon Wilmes pounced on a fumble at the 20 for Rock Port's third fumble of the evening. Hightshoe picked up 6 to the 14, and then Levi Cassavaugh picked up the rest with 2:24 left in the first quarter. Grant McIntyre's pass made it 36-0.

Braxton Hightshoe, Tanner Ridge, and Creed Wilcox combined on a gang tackle that pinned Rock Port at their own 18. Three plays later, the ball was on the ground for the fourth time and Braxton Hightshoe recovered it at the 14. Braxton ran into a blitz and was held to three yards, but then Tyler New got a block from Grant McIntyre and picked up a score. Dylan McIntyre's pass made it 44-0 with 4.1 seconds left in the first quarter. 

Rock Port got their most promising drive on the next possession at the 31. Burke was faced with third and 13 at the 28, but scrambled all the way down to the Tiger 17. They rode the back of Makings, who converted a fourth and one to the 7. But then Burke slipped and fell for no gain at the 7. Herron picked up two to the 5, but then Levi Cassavaugh came on a blitz and sacked Burke to set up fourth and goal at the 12. Grant McIntyre broke up a pass to give the Tigers the ball back on downs. Levi Cassavaugh broke to the second level on a quick hitter, broke a tackle, and was off to the races with 6:13 left for Worth County's final score. Braxton Hightshoe took a pitch and ran it in to make it 52-0.

Obituary -- Iva Sanders 1925-2022

Iva Ruth (Smith) Sanders was born November 3, 1925 in Taylor County, Iowa, the youngest of 10 children, to Willard Smith and Julia (Townsend) Smith. Iva passed away November 3, 2022, gracing this earth 97 years to the day. Iva graduated high school from Hopkins, Missouri in 1944. Iva met Dale Burdett Sanders and while on leave from the Navy Air Corp, the couple was wed in Troy, Kansas on July 10, 1945. Following Dale's honorable discharge from the service the couple moved to Norman, Oklahoma before moving back to Taylor County for the remainder of her life.

Iva worked for many years as a clerk for Place's before working and retiring from the Taylor County Assessor's Office in 1987. Iva and Dale enjoyed traveling, going to coffee and a drink with their friends. Iva was always known to be up for a shopping trip.

Iva was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Dale Sanders; parents, Willard and Julia Smith; siblings, Donald Smith, Carl Smith, Kirk Smith, Galen Smith, Helen Spencer, Alice Tibbetts, Lucile Smith, Ruby Esther Smith and Olive Wyckoff, along with a number of in-laws.

Iva is survived by her daughter, Vickey Sanders Baumli; three grandsons, Steve (Carolyn) Judd, Rusty Judd and JJ (Jena) Baumli; granddaughters, Jenna and Hailee Baumli, Morgan Judd and Skyler Heitman; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

1944 Tigers Saved Best for Last, Stunned Maryville 28-0 to Cap Off Successful Season

The 1944 Worth County Tigers stunned Maryville 28-0 on November 10th to cap off a successful season. The game was supposed to have been played at Worth County, but it was moved to the Maryville College Field (now Bearcat Stadium) “due to unforeseen circumstances,” according to the November 15th, 1944 Times-Tribune. Ross Scott, Max Dawson, Delbert Gabbert, and Jerry Cook were on that team.

There are certain teams you want to play after a loss, and there were other teams you don’t want to play after a loss, and the 1944 Tigers were one of the latter. Earlier in the year, the Tigers were locked in a scoreless tie with Princeton when, with 4 minutes left, the Blue Tigers completed a 65 yard pass to set up a score to beat Worth County 6-0. Worth County responded by beating Albany 25-7; earlier in the year, the Warriors had knocked on the door all night before the Tigers got a 90 yard pick six by Charles Thompson, aided by a block by Galen Ruckman, for the winner in the fourth quarter. 

Then, the Tigers lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to King City. The Tigers responded with a thorough beatdown of Maryville, winning 28-0 and not letting the Spoofhounds past the Tiger 35. The 1944 squad was not unlike the present squad, who lost close games to the two top teams of the conference, only to recover the next week.

The Tigers were able to capitalize on turnovers that game. First, Maryville fumbled at their own 40, and Worth County was able to take it in and score as Kenneth Son took it in for a six yard counter.

W.T. Dawson, a defensive center for the Tigers, picked off a pass to set up another score. Worth County drove down to the 11, where Allen Fletchall scored to make it 14-0 after Kenneth Son’s extra point.

Maryville then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Worth County recovered on the Maryville 31. A running play went to the 14, and then Allen Fletchall threw a pass to Galen Ruckman, who scored. Delbert Gabbert scored the extra point to make it 21-0. Extra points were only worth one point regardless of whether it was kicked or run.

Kenneth Son added a 15 yard run in the second half.

The Maryville stats were similar to those posted by some of Worth County’s 1981 opponents. While Worth County had 221 yards on the ground and 50 through the air, Maryville had only 16 yards on the ground and none through the air. 

Obituary -- Bill Taylor 1957-2022

William Charles “Bill” Taylor, 65, of Hopkins, MO, passed from this life on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at his home.

Bill was born in Maryville, MO, on April 6, 1957, to Don and Winnie (Ballard) Taylor.  He graduated from North Nodaway High School in Hopkins and had attended Northwest Missouri State University. 

He had worked at Deluxe in Maryville, and formerly worked for the railroad, and a factory in Corning, IA.

On February 9, 1980, in Hopkins, MO, Bill was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Murphy.  She passed away on December 1, 2006.  He was also preceded by his parents, and his brother, Alan Vaugh, who died in infancy. 

He enjoyed staying at home, and also spending time with family and family dinners.  He enjoyed watching TV, and an occasional round on mini golf.

His survivors include his son, Dustin Leon Taylor of Hopkins, MO, his daughter, Jessie (Gordon) Brumley, Pickering, MO, his brother, Paul (Carla) Taylor, Quitman, MO, and sister, Linda (Mike) Fletcher, New Mexico.   3 grandchildren, Mason Lee, Tyson Ryder, and Taya Ann Brumley, and numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Bram Funeral Home, Maryville, MO.  The burial followed in the Weathermon Cemetery, Guilford, MO. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the funeral home to help with final expenses.

On October 22nd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Stephen Stevens (60) of Maryville alleging DWI (Felony). Bond was set at $10,000, with the defendant being released on his own recognizance.

On October 23rd, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Charles Miller (56) of Albany alleging two counts Violation of a Protection Order and Harassment (Felony). Bond was set at $4,000, posted by the defendant.

On October 23rd, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Brendon Peterson (22) of Maryville alleging DWI (Felony). Bond was set at $10,000 cash or corporate surety, posted by the defendant. Defendant must install SCRAM prior to release and prepay one month.

On October 24th, the Osceola (IA) Police Department arrested Darren Obermeier (36) of Osceola (IA) on a Ringgold County Warrant for Harassment. Bond was denied.

On October 24th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Kaitlyn Brown (16) of Maryville alleging Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On October 25th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Brian Cuchetti (30) of Albany alleging Driving While Revoked (Felony), No Plates, and No Insurance.

On October 25th, Radio Iowa reported that a woman told authorities and reporters from Newsweek Magazine that her father, the late Donald Studey (75) of Thurman (IA), who passed away in 2013, killed as many as 70 women over three decades in Southwest Iowa in Fremont County. The Des Moines Register has also picked up the story. Mr. Studey allegedly forced his children to help bury the bodies. Reporters from Newsweek said they were at a remote site in Fremont County when dogs picked up the scent of human remains. The Fremont County Sheriff is putting together a plan to search the area.

On October 25th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Corey Nichols (46) of Bethany in Harrison County on charges of DWI and Careless & Imprudent Driving (Accident).

On October 25th, the Osceola (IA) Police Department arrested Daniel Nichols (43) of Afton on a Ringgold County Warrant for Failure to Appear (Driving While Suspended). Bond was set at $300 cash.

On October 27th, Gentry County Prosecutor Jessica Jones filed charges against Michael Siler (46) of St. Joseph alleging Driving While Revoked (Felony) and No Insurance.

On October 27th, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office reported that officers took a report of a stolen vehicle from a location between Ridgeway, Bethany, and Eagleville. Officers located the vehicle crashed a short time later one mile from where it was taken. Subsequently, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department arrested Devin Lacy (36) on charges of Tampering with Motor Vehicle and Harassment. On October 28th, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges. Bond was set at $20,000, cash only.

On October 27, 2022, Margaret Williams, of Diagonal, was arrested on an outstanding Taylor County warrant for burglary in the third degree. She was taken into custody by Adams County Deputies and transferred to the Taylor County Jail where she was held on bond. She has since been released.  This warrant stems from a multijurisdictional investigation into stolen property offenses. 

On October 28th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Waneta Combs (41) of St. Joseph on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, No Insurance, Driving While Revoked, and No Plates.

On October 28th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Todd Hayes (59) of Maryville alleging DWI and Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway.

On October 29th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2005 Toyota Avalon driven by Lareena Amlong (58) of Maryville and a 2022 Honda Passport driven by Katheryn Miller (62) of Sioux Falls (SD) were eastbound on 136 two miles east of Maryville when the Toyota struck the Honda in the rear. Miller, Amlong, and Kyle Miller (33) of Maryville, a passenger in the Miller vehicle, all received minor injuries and were taken to Mosaic in Maryville.

On October 29, 2022, Ringgold County Deputies arrested David Baca, of Grant City, MO on an outstanding Taylor County warrant for failure to appear. He has since been released. 

On October 29th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2008 Chevy Equinox driven by Richard Lebow (70) of Parnell and a 2003 John Deere driven by David Miller (67) of Ravenwood were eastbound on Route 46 one mile east of Ravenwood. The Equinox attempted to pass the John Deere and struck the John Deere. Lebow received minor injuries and was taken to Mosaic in Maryville.

On October 29th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Kathryn Harris (34) of Forest City alleging Assault. Bond was set at $1,000, cash only.

On October 30th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Caleb Phillips filed charges against Seth Shurvington (26) of Maryville alleging Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Felony) and Property Damage. Bond was set at $10,000, cash or surety.

On October 31st, the Maryville Forum reported that someone had thrown a brick into the window at the Finish Line in Maryville, then proceeded to damage the entrance door at around 6 am. The store was open for business at the time.
