North Harrison’s baseball team showed a spike in numbers this year and it translated onto the baseball field for at least one day as they won the Albany Jamboree, tying Albany 4-4 and beating Northeast Nodaway 13-12.
There were no real standouts for the Shamrocks that day as several different green shirts got hits. But Wyatt Maize, Tate Richardson, and Kyler Kimbrough got key hits in the Northeast Nodaway game, and Richardson had a sensational catch in the field to help preserve the win.
Ron Rivera returns for his second year coaching the Shamrocks, and Justin Richardson returns as his assistant. The Shamrocks turned to two players from their past. Bret Emig and Grant Claycomb, to reconnect the players to their glory years. The Shamrocks will know right away how far they have progressed as they will play North Nodaway Friday, another team that has fallen on hard times, but has seen a lot more numbers and enthusiasm this year.
In their first game, Albany jumped on them in the first inning when Barrett Worrell doubled and later came around to score on a groundout.
The Shamrocks used a two-out rally to take the lead in the second. Kellan Craig worked a walk to keep the inning going, and Cole Hartschen reached on an error when his grounder was bobbled. Kyler Kimbrough’s single loaded the bases, and Tate Richardson walked on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run. Ryker Fortner singled in another run to make it 2-1. Albany caught Cole Hartschen in a rundown between third and home to prevent any further damage.
Landon Johnson snagged Carter Dannar’s fly ball to help preserve the Shamrock lead in the second.
Gage Fortner walked and Andrew Craig beat out a slow roller. The ball was thrown away as Fortner scored to make it 3-1 and Craig took second. Dustin Hamilton hit a grounder to the mound. Albany elected to try to get Craig attempting to advance to third, but Craig was safe and the inning continued. Dustin Hamilton stole second and Albany elected to throw down. Hamilton was safe and Craig scored to make it 4-1.
Daulton Worrell came home on a wild pitch in the Warrior third to make it 4-2. Landon Johnson made a diving catch in left field for the Shamrocks to take extra bases away from Shae Miller and keep the Shamrocks in front.
Meric Hansel plunked Carter Dannar and Shae Miller to start the Warrior fourth. John Rigney grounded out to score Dannar, and Barrett Worrell singled home Miller to tie the game at 4-4. But Hansel got out of the inning by getting Landon Hawkins to pop out to preserve the tie.
Northeast Nodaway jumped all over North Harrison to start the second game as Wyatt Scadden and Brady O’Connell walked. Brock Healy doubled them both home and Jace Burns doubled in Healy to put the Bluejays up 3-0 after one.
Xander Bodle made a running catch in shallow center field of Ryker Fortner’s Texas leaguer to preserve the Bluejay lead.
Mason Hiatt singled to start the Bluejay second and Dale Deardorff walked. Lance Runde singled to load the bases. Brock Healy nearly took out base umpire Josh Gilpatrick with a rocket to center field for a base hit to score two to make it 5-0. North Harrison threw out Runde trying to go first to third on the play to end the inning.
Dustin Hamilton reached on an error to start the Shamrock second. Wyatt Maize crushed a double down the left field line to put Hamilton on third. Bluejay pitcher Brock Healy picked off Baylor Hoffman (running for Hamilton) for the first out. He struck out Meric Hansel on a knuckle ball, but then North Harrison teed off on him as Landon Johnson’s pop fly was just over short and dropped in. Kyler Kimbrough doubled into the left corner to score Maize to make it 5-1 and put Johnson on third. Tate Richardson singled to center to score both runners to make it 5-3. Brock Healy started fighting the strike zone, walking Ryker Fortner, Cole Hartschen, and Andrew Craig to force in a run, making it 5-4. Liam Cordell came in but walked Dustin Hamilton and Wyatt Maize to force in two more runs, putting the Shamrocks in front 6-5. Meric Hansel scored on a bad-hop single past short to score Craig and Hamilton and make it 8-5.
At that point, since most baseball jamborees have an eight-run mercy rule, the inning was over and Northeast Nodaway was saved by the bell.
North Harrison’s pitchers then proceeded to fight the strike zone in the Bluejay third. Liam Cordell, Wyatt Maize, Brady O’Connell, and Brock Healy all walked to force in runs and Northeast Nodaway regained a 9-8 lead.
Landon Johnson reached on an error to start the Shamrock third and Kyler Kimbrough walked. Tate Richardson doubled off the center field wall to score Johnson and put Tate Richardson on third. Ryker Fortner’s pop fly to shallow right field scored Kimbrough and put Richardson on third. Fortner stole second. Cole Hartschen struck out and Andrew Craig grounded out to score Richardson to put the Shamrocks up 11-9. Dustin Hamilton and Wyatt Maize walked and Kellan Craig and Landon Johnson were plunked to force in two more runs to put the Shamrocks up 13-9.
Northeast Nodaway had a last gasp in the fourth as Wyatt Scadden singled home two runs and an errant pickoff try scored another to make it 13-12.
