Erica Gerken Fans 14, Tames Hot Winston Bats

Erica Gerken cooled down a red hot Winston squad that includes Pattonsburg's team this year and the Shamrocks salvaged a split against the top two HDC squads, beating Winston 6-1 Tuesday, October 14th. Winston was having their best season in recent memory, scoring over 11 runs a game. This includes a 30-0 win, a 20-0 win, two games in which they scored 18 runs, and two games which they scored 17 runs. But the Redbirds were no match for Gerken and her arm, and North Harrison hit well enough to win, breaking it open in the sixth.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Winston took a 1-0 lead. Jayliegh Robins doubled and Ruby Heintz singled in the fifth to tie it up 1-1. Erica Gerken led off the sixth with a single and Katelyn Briggs followed with another. Carmon Fordyce and Kira Robertson walked to force in the tiebreaking run. The bottom of the order came through as Amber Wilson singled in another run, and Trendi Johnson's two run triple broke it open to make it 5-1. North Harrison added an insurance run in the seventh to get the win.

Gerken struck out 14 Winston batters and only gave up three hits. The fielders were solid behind her, only making two errors. Jayliegh Robins and Erica Gerken were each 2 for 4. Trendi Johnson and Carmon Fordyce each got triples, while Ruby Heintz, Katelyn Briggs, and Amber Wilson also got hits. Katelyn Briggs laid down a perfect sac bunt to move a runner along.

The win erased the sting of a 9-3 loss to Mercer the night before. Mercer has also been having one of their best seasons in recent memory, having a 16-3 record as of Wednesday evening. North Harrison took a 2-0 lead in the second, but then had one bad inning, giving up seven runs in the third and could not catch up. There were two doubles, one error, and then several balls that were bloopers that were just beyond the reach of the green shirts that dropped in for base hits. It would have been worse, but catcher Jayliegh Robins gunned down a runner trying to steal on a first and third situation to help North Harrison get out of the inning. North Harrison got 11 hits, but couldn't move runners around to score. Jayliegh Robins and Ruby Heintz were 3 for 4. Erica Gerken was 2 for 4. Katelyn Briggs, Amber Wilson, and Trendi Johnson each had 1 hit.
