Worth County won its first game over North Andrew since 2011 with a 56-6 halftime victory. The Tigers remained unbeaten on the season going into this Friday’s clash with Stanberry. It was also the first halftime loss for North Andrew since Worth County beat them in 2011, the last time they won state. Rock Port joined the 275 the following year and Worth County dropped North Andrew and added Rock Port to their schedule.
When Worth County joined the GRC for eight man competition, North Andrew had their number for the first few years. But this time, after Tevin Cameron pounced on Lance Streeby’s fumble on North Andrew’s second play from scrimmage, Worth County took the lead and never looked back. Worth County set up shop at the Cardinal 19 and then Ryan McClellan’s trap play gave Worth County first and goal at the 9. Two carries by Tevin Cameron, helped by blocks from Isaac Alarcon and Caleb Parman, put Worth County in the end zone with 9:38 left. Cameron slipped out of a tackle to make it 8-0.
The game was played in muddy field conditions as torrential rains fell all week. The conditions seemed to hurt North Andrew a lot more than they did Worth County. An open receiver slipped and fell on North Andrew’s next series, and two more plays only netted seven yards and North Andrew was forced to punt. The kick was shanked to the 40, giving Worth County another short field. Isaac Alarcon picked up two yards to the 38 and then Worth County lined up Tevin Cameron wide on its next play. Tevin cracked back as though to throw a block and then flew straight down the field for a 38 yard strike from Ryan McClellan with 8 minutes left in the first to make it 14-0.
Ryan McClellan picked off a pass on North Andrew’s first play on its next series. A holding penalty wiped out a pick six, but Tevin Cameron scored off a 27 yard power sweep as Worth County got it right back to boost their lead to 20-0. One of North Andrew’s players punched one of Worth County’s players in frustration on the play, something that the referees didn’t see.
North Andrew finally got some offense going as a screen pass to Lance Streeby went for 20 yards to the Tiger 30. But an illegal shift and a fumbled snap on the soggy field helped thwart the Cardinal drive and Worth County took over on downs at their own 28. Tevin Cameron picked up 10 yards to the 38 behind the blocking of Bryant McCord, and Isaac picked up seven more to the 35. A false start set Worth County back to the 40, but a play action pass from Ryan McClellan to Bryant McCord made it 26-0 with 3:50 left in the first quarter.
North Andrew overcame a sack from Devan Jackson and Mason Hawk on their next play as they aired one out successfully to Caleb Patterson for 19 and Jacob Powelson converted a fourth and one at the 32. But North Andrew couldn’t get any further as Bryant McCord broke up a pass on third and eight at the 34 and the Cardinals were forced to punt. Worth County had its worst field position of the night at their own 21, but it didn’t matter as Ryan McClellan got loose, flew down the right side of the field, and cut it to the left for a 59 yard score with 40 seconds left in the first to make it 34-0 after Jacob New’s conversion pass to Bryant McCord.
This time, North Andrew got on the board as Jacob Powelson aired it out to Caleb Patterson for 50 yards out on North Andrew’s first play from scrimmage as they closed to within 34-6 with 24.6 seconds left. Tevin Cameron got a sack on the extra point attempt.
Worth County got an extended drive going to prevent North Andrew from turning the game into a track meet after starting at their own 25. Isaac Alarcon started off with 5 yards, then Tevin Cameron picked up three and converted a third and two with a power sweep to the 37. He set up for a halfback pass on his next play.
Tevin rolled out to his left, found nobody open, but was able to scramble down the right side for 13. A spread draw to Isaac Alarcon netted 12 and Ryan McClellan scrambled for six to put the ball on the Cardinal 12. Isaac Alarcon went on a sweep to the right side on the next play, and it looked like he would be stopped for a loss. But then Tevin Cameron threw a block to spring him free and then he shed two would-be tacklers like they weren’t even there as he rumbled into the end zone with 10:13 left to put Worth County in front 40-6.
North Andrew tried to turn it into a track meet as they aired it out to Patterson and Bryant McCord was flagged for horsecollar as he took the penalty rather than let him get away for six. That put the ball on the Tiger 25. But when the Cards tried to air it out for a score, nobody was home on first down. On the second play, Ryan McClellan and Bryant McCord tangled up and Lance Streeby was open for a sure six. But Isaac Alarcon saw what was happening, came over from his middle linebacker slot, leaped in the air to tip it, and nearly hauled it in for the pick. Patterson caught a 10 yard pass to the 15 for a first down, but then on the next play, Powelson came under heavy pressure and threw it away. A power sweep to Streeby netted six to the nine, but then Powelson came under heavy pressure and tried to dump it off to Streeby. That didn’t work as he was dropped for a loss of four back to the 13. On the next play, North Andrew tried to shoot for the end zone, but Bryant McCord was there for the pick to kill the drive.
For once, after a 19 yard carry from Tevin Cameron, Worth County stalled and was forced to punt at their own 33. But on third and eight at their own 17, North Andrew threw a pick to Ryan McClellan and Worth County had a short field at the Cardinal 35. Worth County lined up in the same formation which they used to score Devan Allen the week before against Pattonsburg, but this time, Ryan McClellan kept it around the left end. Nobody saw that he had the ball until it was too late and he picked up his second breakaway touchdown with 3:47 left in the half. Tevin Cameron’s second effort gave the Tigers a 50-6 lead.
North Andrew got a first down to their own 30 off a pass interference and, faced with third and one at their own 39, tried to air it out. But this time, Bryant McCord got a pick at his own 21 and returned it all the way to the North Andrew five. It was wiped out by a questionable personal foul call on Drake Kinsella; his block on Ryan Hughes sprung McCord loose as Hughes had a possible angle for a tackle. On the other end, the officials called a horsecollar penalty; they initially tried to call Tevin Cameron for a horsecollar on his own player before they got it right. Then, the North Andrew coach nearly got a penalty for demanding that Kinsella get ejected. After all that was sorted out, Worth County got the ball on its down 21. North Andrew made a stand twice before Tevin Cameron broke loose for a 55 yard run with 1:22 left to put Worth County over the 45 point limit. Isaac Alarcon ran in the extra points to make it 56-6.
Streeby caught a pass for 12 to their own 28 on North Andrew’s next possession, but Caleb Parman broke up a pass, Kinsella ran Hughes out of bounds for an eight yard loss to the 20, Drake Kinsella and Tevin Cameron sacked Powelson back to the seven, and North Andrew was forced to punt to run out the clock.
