Obituary -- Margaret Dowis 1928-2017

Margaret A. Dowis, 89, passed away on September 19, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Kirksville, Missouri. She was born on July 31, 1928 in Sheridan, Missouri to Noble and Lucille (Freemeyer) Aldrich.

Margaret grew up in Sheridan, Missouri. She attended schools in Sheridan, St. Joseph, and Jefferson City, Missouri. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1944. After high school she attended Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri for two years. She married Charles Newton Dowis on August 11, 1948 and taught in a country school for two years. She was a stay at home mother and farmer’s wife until her husband, Charlie died. She returned to Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville earning her BS degree in elementary education. Upon graduation in 1964 she took a sixth grade teaching position in Blue Springs, Missouri. She taught in Blue Springs for 30 years and retired in 1994. While teaching in Blue Springs she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Margaret was a member of the Lake Tapawingo Women’s Club, Blue Spring Retired Teachers’ Association, American Field Services (AFS), Pilot Club, and the Historical Society. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, the Fourth of July picnic at her house, Royals baseball games. gardening, reading a good book and working on the Lake Tapawingo Garden project.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Galen Freeman, III), grand-daughter Catherine Freeman of Kirksville, Missouri; grandson Adam Loomis (Bobbie Loomis) and great granddaughter, Brooklyn of San Jose, California; one niece, Gayle Reidenbach (Fritz) and children Donald and Karen of Columbus, Ohio. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Noble and Lucille Aldrich, her sister Catherine Nally, her husband Charles Newton Dowis, her daughters Becky Dowis-Loomis, Cathy Ann Dowis, and son, Dirk Charles Dowis, and grand- daughter, Kate E. Loomis.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lake Tapawingo Club House on Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date at the Sheridan Cemetery in Sheridan, Missouri.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs, MO. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made for the Margaret Dowis Scholarship Fund with the Blue Springs R-IV School District.
