Obituary -- Rose Findley 1931-2014

Ellen Rose (Drake) Findley, 82, formerly of Grant City, MO, died April 5, 2014, in Savannah, MO. She was born on December 6, 1931, on a farm near Mount Ayr, Iowa to the late Vernon and May Drake. Rose married Robert Findley on April 5, 1952 in Winterset, Iowa. She later lived on a farm in Grant City and had recently moved to Savannah in 2003 to be closer to her grandchildren.

Rose graduated Valedictorian from Mount Ayr High School in 1950. She attended Northwest Missouri State University and received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1961. She later received her Masters in Education from NWMSU in 1968.

She began teaching in rural schools in Iowa in the early 1950’s, and began teaching in the Worth County School District in 1959. She taught nearly every grade in elementary (K-8), as well as remedial reading, and special education. She finished her teaching career as an elementary principal and retired in 1988.  She was passionate about teaching and loved to share stories of her time in school.

Rose was also very active in church. She was baptized at the Denver Christian Church in 1952. She later transferred to Grant City Church and was very involved in Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF). She served as both a local and regional president of the CWF, taught Sunday School classes, and helped plan yearly Women’s Retreats at MWSU. When she moved to Savannah, she transferred to Woodson Chapel Christian Church, and continued to serve the church as an elder and board member.

Her greatest joys in life were her church and her family. Rose loved to help others and had a generous heart. She enjoyed spending time with her family and spoiling her grandkids. She had a contagious smile and a “grandma’s” hug that could brighten anyone’s day.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents and her two sons, Mark and Bobby Findley.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Findley; son, Bill (Merla) Findley; daughter, Diana (Rob) Beattie, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held last Tuesday at 2 at the Grant City Christian Church, Grant City, Missouri. Interment was at the Miller Cemetery, Denver, Missouri. Flowers are appreciated and for those wishing to make a contribution, the family requests they be made to Woodson Chapel Christian Church or a charity of donor’s choice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Meierhoffer Funeral Home and Crematory of St. Joseph.
