Steve Schulte and Claudia Wiederholt were named Homecoming King and Queen for Northeast Nodaway Thursday following a free will supper and pep rally. Other candidates were Austin Jones and Brianna Riley (juniors), Max Giesken and Talina Nelson (sophomores), and Rowdy West and Stephanie Price (freshmen). 7th and 8th grade prince and princess candidates were Dylan Boulting and Maggie Schmitz (7th grade) and Kalvin Rawson and Taylor Coffelt (8th grade). Named prince and princess for the junior high were Kalvin Rawson and Maggie Schmitz. They were crowned by last year's royalty, Kevin Stoll and Shayna Dougan. It all had a happy ending as both teams won Friday night.
Winning the hallway decoration contest were the 7th graders. The seniors won the shirt contest while the sophomores won the poster and float contest. The sophomores won the overall spirit competition. Don and Ruth Adwell were named Fans of the Year.
Music was performed by the Northeast Nodaway pep band, which performs during home basketball games. Members are Brittany Moran (flute); Brittany Burns, Katie DeLong, and Gerry Runde (clarinet); Trevor Edwards, Maverick Price, Vanessa Riley, and Nathan Schieber (trumpet); Colton Wilmes (saxophone); Andrew Freemyer and Peyton Weir (baritone); Dylan Boulting and Shelby Brandt (trombone); and Makayla Adwell, Dakota Auffert, Rory Bredlow, Maggie Schmitz, and Chet Spire (percussion). They are directed by Mrs. Stafford.
Cheerleaders and 'Lil Cheerleaders led the crowd in cheers between pep rally activities. Cheerleaders are Shelby Linville, Shelby Brandt, Morgan Porter, Brianna Riley, Allie Runde, and Samantha Thorburn. They are directed by Mrs. McMillen.
'Lil Cheerleaders are Baylie Busby, Sasha Deardorff, Lindsey Jackson, Frannie Perkins, and Makenzie Pride (1st grade); Blair Allen, Dalanie Auffert, Jill Boswell, Courtney Faustlin, Paiton Hillyard, and Kaylee Pederson (2nd grade); Jaden Atkins, Lily Burns, Kenna Coulter, Emma Kohlleppel, Lauren McIntyre, and Ruby Wilmes (3rd grade); and Jasmine Underwood (4th grade). They are led by captain Mary Boswell and assisted by Alicia Smith, Brea Coulter, and Dana Auffert.
The festivities cumulated in victories for the Northeast Nodaway basketball teams. The games went on despite the weather; they were moved up an hour and the JV games canceled. The girls won 51-38 over North Nodaway, playing their best game of the year and exorcising the demons of another team that had their number over the last few years. The Mustangs had been beating Northeast by running clock margins over the last two years. However, Northeast turned the tables with their second win of the year over North Nodaway, playing well on both sides of the ball to secure the victory.
Dallis Coffelt fouled out of the game, which meant that someone else had to step up scoring for Northeast. But leading scorer Taryn Farnan stepped up her game and had her best game of the year since getting 22 against Albany; she had 21 points going up against taller opposition. Claudia Wiederholt, one night after being crowned homecoming queen, stepped up once again and played her best game of the year, getting a season high 12 points. Jill Spire had 6, Dallis Coffelt had 5, Kerrigan Adwell had 4, and Holly Redden had 3. Free throw shooting had been a liability for Northeast; however, the Bluejays had their best free throw shooting night of the year as they went 19 for 30 in the win. For North Nodaway, Cambry Schluter had 18 and six-footer Madison Thompson followed with 14. But nobody else could score for North Nodaway.
After struggling to get any kind of win earlier in the year, the boys won their second straight and sixth of the year as they posted a solid win, 58-40 over North Nodaway. They played their most complete game of the year as they had four players in double figures. On the other end, they avoided the kind of foul trouble that had plagued them in the first half of the year, allowing only four trips to the line by North Nodaway. Garet Jackson and Joel Scroggie had 13 each. Steve Schulte had 12 the night after being named Homecoming King. Shaun Burns had 11 and Max Giesken had a career high with 7. Andrew Faustlin had 2.
