The City of Grant City will run a ½ cent sales tax on the April ballot for Pool and Parks. The city says it is losing $20,000 a year on operating the pool, excluding maintenance, which it says it becoming too expensive. Passage of the measure requires a simply majority. The council voted to approve the measure at its November meeting.
Emily Wicoff presented the plans for the wastewater project that will bring the city into compliance with DNR regulations. Equipment needs were discussed for if the city has funds left over that it can spend. On their wish list are sewer cameras and grinder pumps. Funds must be approved by the DNR before spending.
The city voted to approve a draft version of the budget for 2022.
The city is in the process of revising and simplifying the dog ordinance. Currently, loose dogs can be impounded by the city, and owners must pay a fee of $50 plus $5 per day to get it back. Dogs not claimed after five days will be euthanized. There have been complaints about barking dogs and one that got off its chain, got into some trash, got into someone’s garage, and was vicious. Under city ordinances, all dogs must be chained at all times and on the owner’s property. Dogs must have a permit and must have proof of a rabies shot.
The city is in the process of drafting a tiny house ordinance. Current such dwellings would be grandfathered in. This new ordinance would only apply to buildings that are occupied, not storage buildings. Occupied buildings must have sewer included.
Great Northwest Days will be February 1st and 2nd this year. A booth is $600. The council voted to approve a booth.
Delinquent taxes were discussed. Over $40,000 in unpaid personal property and real estate taxes are owed to the city. After three years, the city can conduct a tax sale like the county does.
Three council seats are up for election this year. Catherine Runde and Bruce Downing filed for reelection, while Kevin Kobbe filed for the seat vacated by Charlotte Green.
