Camden Castleberry Gets Career Night for Shamrocks; Tiger Girls Still Searching for First Win

Camden Castleberry had 21 points for North Harrison and got a career high as the Shamrocks got their third win out of their last four tries and held off Worth County 34-26 Friday. For Worth County, they had every right to expect a better outcome. They had all their big guns back, with Kynah Steele, Ali Brown, and Abbi Brown back on the floor after battling injuries last month. That gave them a big size advantage in the paint, and they won the battle of the boards 41-29. 

Castleberry’s night was a career high for her. Her previous high was 20 points last year against Grundy County in the Newtown-Harris gym. She also had 19 points last year in the consolation win over Tri-County at the South Harrison Tournament and 18 points earlier this year in the Gilman City win.

But North Harrison overcame their size disadvantage and did it despite missing one of their sparkplugs in Halle Morgan. Despite not being one of the scoring leaders, she had always made some hustle plays for them, and was a key spark in their win over Gilman City. They did it despite not getting a point from Jayliegh Robins, who found things tough going against the much taller Tiger front line.

Coach Aaron Long said that for the first time all year, the Shamrocks came in believing in themselves, and they kept it up the whole game. Even when Worth County tied it up in the fourth quarter, they never stopped believing in themselves. And after a horrific stretch in which they missed 10 free throws in a tow, they made 12 out of their last 14 after the Tigers had rallied in the fourth quarter to tie.

Worth County looked like they would take control of the game at times in the first quarter. Kynah Steele, who had eaten the Shamrocks alive three years ago in junior high in the Tigers’ 37-15 win that year, got Worth County going and they went ahead 4-1. But then Erin Virtue hit a free throw, Camden Castleberry scored off a drive after Trendi Johnson, the littlest player on the floor, kept a possession alive with an offensive board, and Johnson added a triple to make it 7-4.

Autumn Cousatte got the hot hand for Worth County, hitting a 3-pointer and Justina Wimer hit another to spark the Tigers to an 11-7 lead with 1:01 left in the first. But Castleberry hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 11-10 after one quarter of play.

Neither side could find the range in the second quarter. The only scoring was a putback by Jaci Davis to put the Shamrocks in front 12-11, followed by a free throw from Steele and an inside shot from Ali Brown to put the Tigers back in front 14-12 at the break. North Harrison shot themselves in the foot as the missed free throws began to mound.

The score remained stuck at 14-12 until the 5:09 mark of the third, when Camden Castleberry got untracked with a 3-pointer off a pass from Trendi Johnson to make it 15-14. Jayliegh Robins hit her on a cut inside and Erin Virtue kicked one out to her for three to make it 20-16. Kynah Steele’s putback cut it to two, but Jayliegh Robins hit Erin Virtue from the right side to make it 22-18 at the third quarter break. 

But the missed free throws let Worth County back in the game. Taylor Sanders sparked them with a 3-pointer to start the fourth, and by the 5:42 mark, the Shamrock lead was gone as Kynah Steele’s free throw tied it up at 22. But that woke the green shirts up as they suddenly started making their free throws. Camden Castleberry hit one, Trendi Johnson hit two, and Erin Virtue hit one to put the Shamrocks back up 26-22 at the 3:11 mark. Meanwhile, the foul trouble proved to be too much for the Tigers as Ali Brown picked up her fifth foul. Abbi Brown hit a free throw for the Tigers, but Erin Virtue hit two for the Shamrocks to make it 28-23 with 2:38 left in the game.

Autumn Cousatte hit her second 3-pointer with 2:01 to resurrect the Tigers’ chances and make it 28-26, but then the Shamrocks bled the clock down to 1:36 left before the Tigers could foul. Coach Long said that having won two other close games against Hale and Gilman City helped them out during that stretch. Camden Castleberry was automatic from the line to make it two possessions again at 30-26. Jayliegh Robins, who had not scored all night, came up big on the other end and got a tip and steal, and once again, Camden was automatic, hitting both tries at the line with 1:01 left to make it 32-26.

Kynah Steele missed inside and Camden hit two more free throws with 26 seconds left to make it 34-26. Worth County missed two more tries, and Camden was able to dribble out the clock for the win.

For Worth County, Autumn Cousatte had 7. Kynah Steele had 6, Ali Brown 4, Justina Wimer and Taylor Sanders 3, and Paige Sherer and Abbi Brown 2.

Ali Brown had 2 blocks. Hailey Adwell and Kynah Steele had 1.

The Tigers had 10 different players get boards for the night. Ali Brown and Kynah Steele had 7 each, Autumn Cousatte 6, Abbi Brown 5, Hailey Adwell and Brylee Rush 4 each, and Justina Wimer, Liz Brown, Paige Sherer, and Taylor Sanders 2 each.

But the most important stat for the Shamrocks was the turnover numbers. Despite facing full court pressure by Worth County for most of the game, North Harrison only turned the ball over 10 times.

Obituary -- Donna Parkhurst 1940-2022

Donna Jean (Tull) Parkhurst, 81, Eagleville, MO passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at a Bethany, MO nursing home.

She was born March 17, 1940 at the home near Hatfield, Missouri to Oral Rolla and Oma Lucrethia (Johnston) Tull.

She rode her horse, Ribbon, to Lone Rock County School up hill both ways and barefoot in the snow.  She spent a lot of time with her 3-legged dog, Old Spud.  When they consolidated, she went to Eagleville school (the Eagles) until they built the new school North Harrison (the Shamrocks) where she graduated in 1958.

On June 1, 1958, she married Royal Victor Parkhurst.  To this union 3 children were born, Cheryl Ann, Leanna Joy and Patricia Rayleene.  Royal preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage on March 4, 2011.

She worked in the cap factory in Grant City, Old North Station Café, Dinner Bell Café, Crestview Home, attendant for North Harrison Ambulance, Perkie’s Corner, manager of café in the old Sale Barn North of Bethany, ran the sale barn café at the NW MO State Fair and made ham sandwiches at Foodlane grocery in Bethany.

Donna Jean loved playing Funny Rummy and vacations to the Ozarks with the girls and all the kids.  She also loved picking elderberries for jelly, travelling on vacation and camping in a cab-over camper while antelope hunting in Wyoming.  She was so fond of her chickens, rabbits, horses, geese, dogs, cats and even raised a few squirrels.  You never knew when you went to her house if you would see a lamb in the bathtub or baby ducks swimming in it.  She may even have a bottle-fed baby colt, tiny kittens, baby calves or a baby deer wearing a diaper to take care of in the house.  Donna Jean talked to her canaries that sang to her every morning. 

In the early 80’s, she and Royal moved to Texas.  She loved it so much when the grandchildren came to stay for the summer and when visitors from Missouri came to visit.  While in Texas, she took care of elderly people and worked in several restaurants.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Roger Darrel Welch, Jr.; an infant brother; sisters, Verda (Robert) Cummins and Opal (Cleo) Brenizer; parents-in-law, Elza “Hank” and Dorothy Parkhurst;  brothers-in-law, Cecil (Lola Mae) Parkhurst and Donald Parkhurst and her beloved dog, Bexine and Mama kitty.

Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl (James) Porter, Eagleville, MO, Leanna Joy Gilpatrick and Max, Ridgeway, MO and Patricia (Ken) Welch, Neches, TX; grandchildren, Jennifer Parsons, David (Gina) Mossburg, Toni (Mike) Storms, Darci (Kent) Kleopping, Shawna Gilpatrick and Greg Welch; great-grandchildren, Kris Parson, Haleigh and Madisyn Morney, Lakelynn, Owen and Emmet Kleopping, Keliegh and Aspen Gilpatrick and other family and friends.

Obituary -- David Sharp 1953-2022

David Lynn Sharp, 68, Trenton, MO passed away into glory on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at his home.

He was born February 7, 1953 in Bethany, Missouri the son of James Charlie Sharp and Dorothy Lee (Crain) Sharp Campbell.

David grew up on a farm northeast of Martinsville, MO. He delighted in telling his family about his childhood on the farm. He graduated from Martinsville High School. After high school, he worked in a gas station and then became a dozer operator. During this time, he met the love of his life, Leola Marcene Parkhurst and they were married on September 9, 1972.

David worked for a farmer in Iowa and then they moved to the Bethany area. He worked for Buzzard Gulch and opened up two different shops, last of which brought them to Trenton in 1981 and eventually bought BG Muffler. David continued to work for farmers during planting and harvest seasons. He also worked for Trenton Sand Plant and Premium Standard Farms.

David and Marcene were blessed with six children: James Christopher, Regena Marcene Sharp Renshaw, Robert Lee, John Ryan, Jason Paul, and adopted son, Michael Wayne Kidd.

Over the years, David enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, woodworking, cards, and IOOF. His heart’s desire was God, his family and farming. In his later years, his passion was his Lord and his desire to share his Lord with any and everyone.

David joined in glory his parents, Charlie and Dorothy; his mother-in-law, Neva Parkhurst; brother-in-law, Lloyd Agee and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Leaving to mourn and celebrate his passing into glory are his wife of 49 years, Marcene Sharp, of the home; children, Christopher (Sherry) Pittsburg, KS, Regena (Bryan) Trenton, MO, Robert, John (Mandy), Trenton, MO,  Jason (Ashley), Cainsville, MO, and Michael (Jennifer) Kidd, Kansas City, MO; sister, Barb Agee; brothers, Mike (Carolyn), Jack (Evelyn), Patrick (Michele), and Chuck (Cindy); 21 grandchildren; father-in-law, Marvin Parkhurst; brother-in-law, Steven (Winona) Parkhurst; sister-in-law, Joyce Jensen; several nieces and nephews and a community of friends.

Obituary -- Raymond Boothe 1943-2022

Raymond Eugene Boothe, 78, Eagleville, MO passed peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Livingston Manor, Chillicothe, MO under the care of Three Rivers Hospice.

He was born on May 2, 1943, in Bethany, Missouri the son of Raymond Donald and Carol Lorraine (Parkhurst) Boothe.

He married Carol McCoy-Boothe in 1964. They divorced and he later married Regina Coulthard-Boothe in 1994.

Raymond was a lifelong farmer and resident of Harrison County. He graduated valedictorian from North Harrison High School in 1961 and then continued his education at the University of Missouri on the Curators Scholarship where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education in 1965. He taught in Ridgway and years later he returned to the classroom to teach in Cainsville, MO. He spent many years on the Board of Education at North Harrison schools along with being a bus mechanic and driver. He worked as a Building Trades teacher for the Missouri Corrections System for several years, teaching inmates how to build houses from the ground up. He loved watching and listening to the Royals and the Missouri Tigers. He was a member of the Eagleville United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Regina Coulthard-Boothe and a grandson, Levi Boothe.

Raymond is survived by his children, Kimberly (Mike) Guilford, Macon, MO, Raymond (Amy) Boothe, Kansas City, MO, Staci (Ryan) Perry, Osborn, MO, and Lindsay (Mason) Calvert, Osborn, MO; sister, Karen (Steve) Booth, Ridgeway, MO; brother, Larry (Sue) Boothe, Ankeny, IA; nine grandchildren, Nichole, Mitchell, Makayla, Hannah, Rachel, Kristin, Mackenzie, Trevor, and Bo; eight great grandchildren; an aunt and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Raymond has been cremated under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, Eagleville, MO.

Obituary -- Rachel Cattrell 1930-2022

Rachel I. Cattrell, age 91 passed away on January 4, 2022. She was born on November 15, 1930 in Moline, IL, the youngest of four children of Carl and Hazel Engh.

Rachel graduated from Moline Senior High School in 1948 and attended one year of Blackhawk College. She married Jack G. Cattrell in 1950 and had two children with him, Colleen Jacqueline and Gail Anne. 

Rachel loved collecting antiques and traveled to England numerous times where she found additions to her Wedgewood and doll collections. She often attended local concerts and there was usually music playing in her room. She also loved animals, especially her treasured cats and the generations of raccoons she fed on her deck. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, daughter Gail, parents and brothers Carl Victor, Arthur and Robert. She is survived by daughter Colleen and nephews Martin Engh and Dave Cattrell. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations would be appreciated made to Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley, IL.

On December 30th, five people were injured in a three car accident at 136 and Pleasant View Drive just east of Maryville. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek driven by Connor Nielson (20) of Maryville and a 2010 Ford Explorer driven by Charles Henry (36) of Ravenwood were eastbound on 136, while a 2004 Ford F150 driven by Grant Hegeman (41) of Maryville was westbound. Nelson slowed to turn onto Pleasant View Road when Henry failed to slow down, struck Nielson’s vehicle in the rear, and became attached. Both vehicles crossed the center of the roadway and the Nielson vehicle struck the Hegeman vehicle in the driver side tire. The Hegeman vehicle rotated counter clockwise and came to rest on the westbound shoulder. The Nielson and Henry vehicles became detached. The Nielson vehicle came to rest on the westbound shoulder, while the Henry vehicle continued eastbound, ran off the north side, returned, and ran off the south side and came to rest in a private drive. Henry received serious injuries and was taken to Mosaic in St. Joseph. Nielson received moderate injuries and was taken to Mosaic in Maryville. A passenger, Randi Nielson (44) of Maryville, received serious injuries and was taken to Mosaic in Maryville. Two minors, a 16 year old girl and a 12 year old boy, received moderate injuries and were taken to Mosaic in Maryville. Hegeman was not injured.

On December 30th, the Tri-County Health Department reported that scammers were impersonating state and local health inspectors and contacting businesses. The Tri-County Health Department has only one health inspector, who is occassionally assisted by a state health inspector. Any person, business, or inspection site may ask for identification if suspicious.

On January 1st, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Augustus Shunk (21) of Fillmore in Nodaway County on charges of DWI, Speeding, and Failure to Dim Headlights.

On January 1st, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Cory Polley (33) of Ridgeway on charges of DWI (Prior) and Failure to Move Over for Stationary Emergency Vehicle.

On January 2nd, Special Prosecutor Terry White filed charges against Christopher Moore (42) of St. Joseph in Nodaway County alleging DWI, Possession of Marijuana, No Valid License, Failure to Drive on Right Half of Roadway, Careless & Imprudent Driving, and No Insurance.

On January 2nd, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Aaron King (47) of Bethany alleging Harassment (Felony). Bond was set at $25,000, with defendant released on his own recognizance.

Michael Losee, 31, of Bedford was arrested on January 3, 2022 by the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department in the 400 block of Illinois Street in Bedford. He was charged with 2nd degree criminal mischief and is being held in the Taylor County Jail on $5,000 cash bond.

On January 3rd, the Iowa State Highway Patrol reports that a two vehicle crash west of Mount Ayr injured two. The Patrol says that a 2012 Buick Enclave driven by Alemu Temesgen (40) of St. Joseph ran a stop sign while northbound on P27 north of Redding at the intersection of P27 and Route 2. The Patrol says that the Buick struck a 2005 Dodge Van driven by William O’Conner (18) of Clearfield.

On January 3rd, Harrison County Prosecutor Johnathan Meyer filed charges against Kevin Groe (56) of Mesa (AZ) alleging Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, No Valid License, and No Insurance.

Charges listed are mere allegations. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Tyson Gibson Scores 17 as Shamrocks Use Free Throws to Beat Hawks

Tyson Gibson had 17 points for North Harrison as the Shamrocks came back from as much as 10 down in the first half to beat Gilman City 60-58 Monday. Their season has been a roller coaster, depending on which team shows up to play. They have had some impressive wins, against North Nodaway, Trenton, and Pattonsburg. They have hit some low notes, including a loss to Hale at Trenton in which they were 8 for 31 from the line. But against Gilman City, after falling behind early, they were able to rally back, get the lead by the fourth quarter, and then go 16 for 21 from the line to hold off the Hawks at the end.

The game started off evenly until Kyler Preston got untracked for the blue shirts and hit consecutive NBA three-pointers to get his team started. Preston had his third triple as North Harrison continued to neglect guarding him, and it looked like a long night for the Shamrocks, down 18-10 after one quarter. Offensively, the Shamrocks were struggling to move the ball and solve the box and one that Gilman City was putting on Wade Briggs.

Kaleb Fehring hit from the left side to start the second quarter, but then Nick Babinski erupted for seven in the period as the Shamrocks finally started finding their footing. The Hawks were faceguarding Wade Briggs, so that meant that everybody else had to step up in order for the green shirts to get their fourth win of the year. With Brandon Hamilton battling foul trouble the whole came, that meant someone else had to step up inside as well. Finally, Matthew Heintz scored from inside and Nick Babinski hit from the right wing as the Shamrocks got it back down to 21-16 at the 4:45 mark. Kaden Locker got loose in transition, but then free throws from Tyson Gibson and Nick Babinski got it back down to 23-20. Gilman City twice pushed it ahead to seven again, only for North Harrison to make a final push before half and cut it to 30-27 after Wade Briggs’ three point play got him on the board after a Matthew Heintz tip and Nick Babinski steal.

North Harrison finally got a push on the other end as they got eight straight stops on defense, moving into the lead after Keygun Johnson, Nick Babinski, and Tyson Gibson got loose as they went up 35-31. Four straight from Brody Langfitt broke the run and tied it again at 35 after Brandon Hamilton picked up his fourth foul, but then Keygun Johnson knocked a shot down and Cooper Cracraft got loose on the boards; he had 8 for the game, with 7 of them in the second half. Cooper scored from inside and Nick Babinski got loose in transition to make it 41-35 again. Nick Babinski scored from the high post and Cooper Cracraft hit Gibson backdoor to make it 45-36.

But then, Tyson Gibson picked up his fourth foul and the game turned again. Brody Langfitt hit two free throws to close out the third, and then Kaden Locker got loose in transition and added a steal and the lead was nearly gone at 45-42. Cooper Cracraft’s putback temporarily broke the run, but then missed free throws fueled it again as Landon Preston’s shot cut it to 47-46 with 3:15 left in the game.

But then Wade Briggs, who had three points up to that point, righted the ship, scoring 10 in the last 3:11 as the Hawks had to start fouling. He made three of four at the line and Keygun Johnson got loose behind the Hawk defense to make it 52-46 as Cracraft and Babinski anchored the defense with their rebounding.

Two more Briggs free throws made it 54-47, but then North Harrison missed a boxout, Gilman City got an extra possession, and Kaden Locker’s off-balance triple banked home with 55 seconds left to make it 54-50. Briggs hit two more, but then Landon Preston answered back with a drive, and Gilman got a steal off the press. But they missed wildly off the layup try, Tyson Gibson got the defensive board, and he hit one of two to make it 57-52 with 30 seconds left. 

Brody Langfitt nearly lost the ball on the ensuing possession, but recovered and his behind the back look to Landon Preston for a NBA three cut it to 57-55 with 18 seconds left. But Wade Briggs hit two more free throws to make it 59-55, and then Preston missed a 3-pointer and Peyton Taggart a putback try before Briggs hit a free throw with 2 seconds left. Langfitt hit a 3-pointer from 35 feet out as time expired.

North Harrison nearly got four in double figures as Tyson Gibson had 17 and Nick Babinski and Wade Briggs had 13 each. Keygun Johnson had 9, Cooper Cracraft 4, and Matthew Heintz and Brandon Hamilton 2 each.
