Kevin Stoll Gets Triple Double; Kristan Judd Honored in Final Home Game

Kevin Stoll got a triple double in leading the Northeast Nodaway boys to a double overtime win and the girls' lone senior, Kristan Judd, was honored at Senior Night last Tuesday as the boys won and the girls lost to Mound City. The girls played well at times before Mound City started to pull away and won 51-31. Taryn Farnan scored 14 for Northeast. "We've been either way up or way down," said Coach Vance Proffitt. "This time, we played up to their level for a while." The girls will miss Kristan Judd, who was always looking for ways to make the team better even when hurt. But they will have a solid group of juniors for next year. For the boys, they had a double overtime thriller before they finally pulled off a 47-42 win over the Panthers. It was nothing like the last multiple overtime game, which went for six frames before Northeast won 100-92 over King City. This was a low-scoring defensive struggle all the way. But for Kevin Stoll, Sage DeLong, Aaron Patton, and Tyler Schmitz, Northeast was able to send them off with a win.

Nobody could take control in the first quarter as the game was tied at 3, 5, and 8 before Kevin Stoll hit from the left side at the buzzer to put Northeast up 10-8 following a Panther turnover. Aaron Patton and Steve Schulte had three in the period and Sage DeLong had the other two for Northeast in the period. Mound City was making a concerted effort to get it inside, but Northeast was collapsing hard and getting some turnovers.

The game continued to be close for a while as the score was tied at 13 and 15. But then Northeast started struggling on the boards and Mound City got a pair of steals off their press as they started taking control in the second quarter to go up 24-15 late in the period. But then Kevin Stoll took a charge on defense and Shaun Burns hit a 3-pointer on the other end as Northeast did not let it get over double digits and trailed 24-18 at the half.

The game settled into a defensive struggle for most of the third quarter before Aaron Patton finally got five points in a row to make it 30-26. But then Mound City was able to work it inside before the third quarter buzzer and then use a long possession at the start of the fourth to go back up by eight. It was like the battle between the Greeks and the Trojans in Homer where the gods decreed that Hector would win great victories so that Achilles would win greater glory. Just when the Trojans started to set fire to the Greek vessels, somehow the Greeks found the reserve to drive off the Trojans. Mound City got a steal and they had a chance for a wide open layup that would have made it double digits; however, Steve Schulte blocked the layup attempt and Kevin tied up the rebound attempt and all of a sudden the saga repeated itself on a far less significant battlefield.

From there on out, Northeast started coming back as Mound City overreached and Aaron hit a 3-pointer. Mound City missed a pair of close shots and The General was there again for Northeast, powering up against two defenders for a 3-point play. Mound City threw up a prayer and drew a foul to go back up 36-32, but then Tyler Schmitz went backdoor for a pass from Kevin Stoll and Kevin stripped a defensive rebounder and drew a foul and hit a free throw to make it 36-34. Mound City had several chances to make it two possessions again or eat up minutes on the clock, but they jacked up a pair of 3-pointers that missed and they got a steal for a layup try; however, Aaron Patton and Steve Schulte were there to force a travel.

It looked like Mound City would still be able to escape after a valiant effort by Northeast as Kevin Stoll's free throw that would have made it tied at 36 was in and out. Mound City called timeout with 55.9 seconds left and elected to set up an alley oop play that would have put them up three. It made perfect sense since Northeast was likely to extend their defense in that kind of situation and deny everything in an effort to get the ball back. However, the operation was successful but the patient died -- the play worked perfectly, but the layup went in and out and Northeast had a chance to tie or take the lead.

The Bluejays had been in this sort of situation in their six-overtime win and in several games this year; they did not rush up shots like a lot of teams do when behind. They showed good patience with the ball and worked it into Joel Scroggie inside and The Tree hit one out of two to tie it up at 36 with 35 seconds. Mound City ran it down for the last shot, but missed badly on a 3-point attempt and Steve Schulte was there for the rebound. The Squirrel was everywhere that night, always in the right place at the right time.

Northeast looked to take control in the first overtime as Kevin Stoll hit a tough shot inside and Shaun Burns drove and hit a reverse layup to make it 40-36. But then Mound City was bailed out by the officials as Shaun never touched a Panther player but was called for the foul anyway and they hit one out of two from the line. It may well have been a makeup; Joel Scroggie should have been called for a charge earlier in the frame as his man was set. Those were among the rare misses for the officials, who did a good job of keeping a hard-fought game under control. Northeast threw the ball away and Mound City hit a 3-pointer to tie with 45 seconds left at 40. Northeast worked the ball down for the last shot, but Kevin Stoll's shot from the high post missed and the game went to a second overtime.

Mound City hit two free throws to start the next overtime and Aaron Patton missed badly on a runner. But then Tyler Schmitz was there for the offensive board and hit both three throws to tie it again at 42. Mound City then missed another 3-pointer and Kevin Stoll put on a fake and drove to the rim for a bucket and Northeast was up 44-42.

From there, Mound City could not tie it up and Northeast could not score to make it two possessions for a long time. Finally, Mound City got a steal and a layup try, but once again, Steve Schulte was in the right place at the right time to contest the shot and force the miss and Northeast was still up two. Finally, Shaun Burns got loose underneath the basket and drew a foul and hit both his free throws with 35 seconds to put Northeast up 46-42.

Mound City still had a chance if they could score a 3-pointer; that would give them the ball back with a chance to tie even with two made free throws for Northeast. But Kevin Stoll blocked his 9th and 10th shots as the 3-pointer never came and Steve Schulte hit another free throw with 10 seconds left to ice it. For Kevin, he had 11 points, 14 boards, and 10 blocks in the win; that was the second time that he blocked 10 shots this year.
